we checked in with jimmy and his wife molly yesterday and this is what they're up to. [ laughter ] you know, plenty of fluids. [ laughter ] i'm not sure those are the right fluids. that's what they're up to. i will say, i'm having a great time. so jimmy, i know this is maybe a weird thing to say, feel free to have covid as long as you want. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] it starting to feel -- it looks like long covid. i'm not a doctor. [ laughter ] but i like long hosting. everyone who works at this show is really tremendous. they keep telling me things like, "you're in the way." [ laughter ] "can i see your badge?" [ laughter ] it really means so much to me. i hosted last night and the reviews came pouring in. here on youtube one of them said, "never heard of this guy, pleasantly surprised."

[ cheers and applause ] i was actually supposed to be a guest on the show this week. i was coming on to talk about a new show that i wrote, a solo show, "the old man in the pool." now that i'm hosting, i can't promote that show. [ laughter ] which is sort of unfortunate that i'll be in chicago, the steppenwolf theater, through may 22nd. i'll be in los angeles at the forum july 27th to august 28th. and now you'll never know that. [ laughter ] i'm here from new york city. it's always interesting being here in los angeles. the weather is different, the food, the crime, even. >> the driver in a white box truck led lapd on a wild pursuit. according to officers around 3:30 a.m., the suspect burglarized a grow house in venice and drove off with several crates of marijuana. some of the crates fell out of the back of the truck during the pursuit. [ applause ] >> mike: i want to be clear. i don't usually drive like that. [ laughter ] i had somewhere to be, and a ton of weed in my truck. [ laughter ] i was on my way to jimmy and molly's. no, that wasn't me. i don't smoke a lot of pot because i'm the person when you spoke pot is like, "do you guys hate me?" [ laughter ]

"why does my heart hurt, is that rickets?" yeah. it's not a good look. [ applause ] i saw this in the news today. a 100 year-old man just broke the world record for working at the same company. he's worked there for 84 years. this is a picture here. [ laughter ] [ applause ] no come on now, come on. it's actually -- no, it's actually this guy in brazil who's been at the same company since 1938. it's very odd. right now there's a record number of people actually quitting their jobs. 4.5 million americans quit their jobs in march. which i can relate to. [ laughter ] i've always wanted to leave every job i've ever had. when i was in high school i worked as a bus boy at this restaurant and the chefs were so mean to me. and one day, one of them asked me, “how'd you even get this job?"

"oh, my brother joe worked here last summer." his eyes lit up, "your brother is joey bag of doughnuts?" [ laughter ] and i said, "yes." i went home that night, "joe, was your nickname at the restaurant joey bag of doughnuts?" he goes, "no, that was this other guy." [ laughter ] "that guy was awesome." so for the rest of the summer i had to live the lie. that my brother was joey bag of doughnuts. [ laughter ] literally, the people in the kitchen would be like, how much does joe-bag drink? i'd be like, so much. [ laughter ] i lived in fear that the real joe-bags would walk through that kitchen door, blow my cover. so i can understand why people are leaving their jobs. [ laughter ] it's not fun sometimes i don't know if you noticed here on your way into the theater tonight. there's more darth vaders than usual on hollywood boulevard.

[ laughter ] because it's may 4th, also known as "star wars day." [ cheers and applause ] yeah. obviously a huge deal. we're celebrating. ewan mcgregor on the show tonight. [ cheers and applause ] yeah. we are so prime. “star wars” is one of the only movie franchises with its own holiday. you don't see anybody dressing up as vin diesel and wishing you "a happy fast 5th." [ laughter ] i'm a fan of “star wars” and just a fan of movies in general. i think movies are a bit like life. you know, it's like sometimes your friend dies and you're so sad and you think, "well, i guess he wasn't the protagonist." "star wars," i think. i was confused because i thought guillermo lived at the studio here. [ laughter ] also, why christmas for "star wars"? what religion are you observing? i sort of get it. "star wars" and the bible have similarities. they both have story issues. [ laughter ] they're overly interpreted. so i was talking to some of the nerds here at the office. [ cheers and applause ] i'm such a fan of yours from "trainspotting," "moulin rouge." [ cheers and applause ] >> i've got a nice story. my eldest daughter, clara, introduced me to your stand-up years and years ago. she's such a huge fan of yours. >> oh my gosh. >> we were driving an old ford mustang, driving from scotland to london. i had to pull off the motorway because we were laughing so

hard. >> mike: oh! >> i couldn't see to drive the car anymore, it was becoming quite dangerous so we had to pull over, it was so nice. >> mike: that could not make me happier. >> that's great. >> mike: true joy. >> she told me to tell you she has all your albums. >> mike: oh my gosh. that makes me so happy. and you travel a lot. i like your motorcycle documentaries too. >> yes. >> mike: that's part of your -- like what you get excited about. >> a big part of my -- yeah, i love it, i love travel in general. i love traveling by motorcycle. i've done these big trips with my mate, charlie. we've been -- not all over the world, there's lots to discover, but we've had an amazing experience. yeah, no, we've made documentaries about it, people like them. it's nice, yeah, it's good. >> mike: that's amazing. >> you just got off a plane on monday thinking you were going to be a guest, now you're hosting a show? >> mike: ewan, we could talk about this offline, but this has been a strange week. [ laughter ] >> man, you're doing really well, man, you're just doing great, well done. >> mike: i -- thanks.

[ cheers and applause ] yeah, i can't tell you how strange it is. but i'm a massive fan of yours. so with your -- with, like, the "star wars" universe, and people obviously -- someone has a lightsaber in the audience here. people are obsessed. do your fans probably know sometimes more than you do about the movies? >> yeah, yeah, yeah. guillermo knows how to pronounce my character's name better than i do. [ laughter ] [ applause ] >> guillermo: yeah! obi-wan kenobi! >> yes, i often come unstuck with fans when they start talking about planets, you know -- i'm not as up to speed on everything as i should -- i should probably get one of those "star wars" manuals that tells you everything. >> mike: sure, yeah. >> luckily on this series, we had deborah chow, our amazing director, she really knows across all the -- now "star

wars" has become -- it's the movies, but it's also tv shows, it's computer games, it's -- >> mike: right. >> it's cartoon books, comics. all of the storylines have to sort of match up. >> mike: sure. >> you can't have some fact in the video game that doesn't match up to the movie. so i would be totally at sea there. but she was amazing at knowing all of that stuff. and guiding the writers as well with that. >> mike: did you -- do you watch yourselves in the "star wars" movies? >> i watched all of them to prepare for this. because the last one i did was, we shot the episode iii in sydney, australia in 2003, i think. it's been quite some time. almost 20 years. so -- but when i knew we were going to do this and we started getting ready to do it, i did watch all of them. i sat -- i didn't do them in one go. [ laughter ] >> mike: yeah, yeah. by the way, some people do. >> they do, i know.

[ laughter ] >> i watched them all. i was really -- it was really interesting to go back to the, you know, the first one with liam and ahmed best. there was such a huge thing to happen, i mean, in my life, it was a bit like you now, me becoming obi-wan kenobi is like you hosting "jimmy kimmel" overnight. [ laughter ] >> mike: we don't have to make comparisons, ewan. >> it was a big deal. to watch that movie again was really great fun. also, it was nice to see them, you know -- it was tricky at the time. they did -- they weren't overwhelmingly embraced by everybody when they came out, our prequels. and so it was nice to watch them now, knowing that people loved them, that there's a -- the kids who we made them for at the time, they loved those films a lot. it was nice to watch them with

that sense now. >> mike: i grew up on the originals. and i was shocked when i found out that your uncle was in the originals as an actor. >> yeah. >> mike: i couldn't believe that this is -- this had not -- i had not heard this information. >> the first film i think i went to see -- no, it wasn't the first film i went to see in the cinema, because that was "bedknobs and broomsticks." [ laughter ] >> mike: another classic, by the way. >> another classic. >> mike: i think it was "bedknobs and broomsticks day." >> day. standing outside the school i was 5 or 6, standing outside the school with my brother. and my mom and dad picked us up, they were taking us to the big city to watch a movie that my uncle, dennis, was in. we went and were so excited to go and see, you know, your uncle in a movie. it was so exciting. then we sat down and it was "star wars." [ laughter ] blew our minds away, you know. amazing. amazing. he played a character called wedge. he survives all three of the original "star wars" movies. there he is, wedge.

[ laughter ] [ applause ] uncle dennis. he's doing a musical in great britain at the moment, touring around, they're going to be at the barbican. "anything goes." he's a real song and dance man, my uncle dennis. he's always been my acting hero. if i ever got stuck at work, he's the only person i'd ever phone and ask, you know, acting advice. i'm very like him. i see -- i see bits of him in my work all the time. i call him, actually, from sets sometimes. "den, i totally did you again today." [ laughter ] after about 10 years, 15 years of doing this he called me one day, "ewan, i [ bleep ] did you today." [ laughter ] >> mike: oh my god, that's unbelievable. i was told you received something special today. >> yes. i got sent over my -- i really did only just see this about an hour ago.

[ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> mike: welcome back. ewan mcgregor is with us. ewan, what can you tell us -- everything's so locked down with "star wars." >> yeah. >> mike: what can you tell us about "obi-wan kenobi" the series? >> well, no, i mean, it's supposed to be ten years after the end of episode iii. i always thought there must be a great story between the last

episode i made and alec guinness in episode iv in "the new hope." and i was right. we found a really good story to tell in that time frame. so it's ten years after the end of episode iii. you know, we've seen me at the end of episode iii take luke skywalker to uncle owen and aunt beru on tatooine. that's another story. i take the baby there and drop him off. this is ten years later. and the jedi order has all but been destroyed. everyone else who wasn't destroyed in order 66 is in hiding. so i've been, you know -- and i'm carrying the guilt, or obi-wan is carrying the guilt of having failed anakin and lost anakin to the dark side. so he's a bit of a -- he's a bit of a mess, you know. he's at a very low point. >> mike: yeah.

>> and sort of in hiding. he's not being a jedi. he's, you know -- he's pretty bleak-minded. and then something happens. and he has to decide to help someone do something or not. >> mike: wow. >> that's the series. [ laughter ] >> mike: that sounds great. i can't wait to see that. so do you find -- you do such varied things. do you find there's a collision ever of like your motorcycle documentaries and your "star wars" stuff, does that ever find -- >> oh, well this scene that i'm talking about where i deliver luke skywalker. it was -- like i said, we did episode iii in sydney. so my "long way" buddies came over -- we hadn't done it yet, 2004. it was after "star wars." so they came over. my mate charlie and our two producer-directors russ and dave came over. we made a little promo in australia. we borrowed a couple of more shot a sort of trailer of what

"long way round" might be. so they were in australia when we were doing that scene. so i said, guys you've got to come on set. because i'm giving luke skywalker to -- this is the big moment. >> mike: big moment, yeah. >> so they're there. i walk downstairs. go walk on the stage. this is the stage. it's entirely blue. blue all the way around. blue floor. there's a blue -- there's a blue, like a baseball pitcher's mound in the middle of the set. >> mike: yeah? >> it's blue. that's where uncle owen and -- >> mike: sounds very exciting. this sounds very, very exciting. [ laughter ] >> there's a blue gym horse on the set. a gym horse that doesn't move. it's not -- it doesn't move in any way, it's just a gym horse that's been painted blue. >> mike: okay. >> they give me a plastic baby. and up i get on the gym horse. and my mates are sitting over there behind the monitor -- >> mike: this is nothing like "star wars." >> they're over there snickering. action! and i have to pretend that the gym horse is moving. loping like this. so then i walk over and i give the baby to aunt beru or uncle owen, i can't remember who. i walk back, i look over my shoulder, give them this last "may the force be with you" type look. then i have to sit backwards on the gym horse. [ laughter ] >> mike: yeah, yeah. >> lope out of there. and that was my -- >> mike: that was bring your buddies to workday. chris miller. chris directed all the episodes. sam richardson, ike barinholtz, tiffany haddish, me, dave franco, a thousand talented people in it. each episode is a different genre film. mine was a musical. while you're figuring out whodunit, i sing songs and dance for the first time on camera. >> mike: yes. >> i thought that was very nerve-racking but very exciting. >> mike: so what was the dancing, what did that look like? >> it was like this -- first of all, i gained so much respect, always had, but even more so for dancers. there is a wonderful choreographer called cat. she would take 40 minutes of teaching me how to do something for the first time, i'm so grateful. then six dancers would come in, "all right, it's an elephant twist with a buffalo snap, one, two, three, five, six, seven, eight." you guys know. everything i learned in 45 minutes, they learned in one sentence perfectly, and they're behind me crushing it. and i'm like, argghh! [ laughter ] it's incredible what these dancers can do. did you ever dance?
