" the lead researcher studying the rebound symptoms and joins us live from the newsroom.

>> some of the rebound cases researchers are noticing are very small. a majority of the people are getting better within the first five days of treatment. a large supply of it just made it to the county today. the number of locations with the supply are slowly getting -- today, the first sight of his kind opened in the bay area. >> they will get a rep in antigen test. most of those test results are available within 15 minutes. if the person is eligible -- then they are going to get screened. >> the deputy health officer

confirmed anyone who was within the first five days of experiencing covid symptoms could drive to the college of san mateo site sunday through thursday to get screened for this. >> they have 100 courses of paxlovid. it seems there is enough for the state of california. >> it was approved in december for high-risk covid patients. clinical trials confirmed it reduces the death and hospitalization risk by 89%. now, as more people are taking it, researchers are reporting some rebound covid symptoms after the treatment. >> it fell dramatically better and then about four days after he finished paxlovid, he had rebound symptoms with his heart racing, feeling unwell, short of breath. the doctor is the read -- lead researcher for the study. he believes tommy can play a role in a possible rebound effect.

>> we don't really understand the biology of this yet. one theory is taking antiviral medicine too early can change the natural immune response somebody develops and maybe when the medicine disappears, the immune system is not really ready to control the virus that is still there. >> the state expects to add more tests to treat sites. going back, researchers say they have been tracking the impact of this antiviral bill. he said several people developed long covid were able to access this and now claim to feel better. more research is needed. in the newsroom, abc 7 news. >> health officials in santa cruz county are urging people to take precautions. they are advising that people mask up to avoid the spread of covid and they recommend to stay home if you are sick. keep windows and doors open.

santa cruz county is one of three counties in california advancing to the moderate level of covid risk. new data shows the bay area is getting hit harder than other parts of the state. dustin dorsey spoke with experts about why this is happening and when cases may drop back down. >> we are hearing troubling information. we have some good news despite a cases. hospitalizations are only slightly up taking. >> what is happening is that the cases go up but hospitalizations are staying low. that was true for the vaccinated with omicron being one. >> now, the taft's, nine of the top 10 counties with the highest covid infection ratings are bay area counties.

phone. three days later, police documents show a 12 and 13-year-old were arrested in connection to the crime. >> they were young but it looked like they had been doing this point enough. i broke the story involving one of the same suspects who was 11 at the time. an 80-year-old man was knocked to the ground. days later, that same youth carjacked an asian woman in oakland. over the past year, multiple law enforcement agencies have told me young people continue to commit armed robberies across the bay area. the question stands of why they keep reoffending. >> they keep encouraging the youngsters. they were precluded from interviewing them with regards to the crime. many times they are taken into custody. >> as for the siblings, while

they were outside dealing with the trauma of being carjacked and assaulted, the ailing cousin passed away inside. >> i wanted to give the police information while it was still fresh in my mind. >> she hopes there is a way to hold these young people accountable. >> it is just sad to see that asians are being targeted. it is so unfair. >> the man suspected of showing a san jose father has been spotted.

san jose police accused them of shooting and killing his neighbor. prosecutors filed former -- filed charges today. they appear separately in court today and faced three counts of murder stemming from the alleged shootout that left six people dead and 12 wounded. they did not enter a plea today and will be back in court in june. they could get the death penalty of -- if convicted authorities are looking for a third suspect. plus no information about the event formerly known as the gilroy garlic festival. what one organizer is planning for this year after the annual
