be vaccinated without their parents consent. new data shows bay area counties have some of the highest covid positivity rates in the state right now. j.r. stone spoke to several experts about why now and what's to come. >> what's your thought on why we are seeing the highest positivity rates in san francisco versus other parts of the state? >> there are lots of different possibilities. i think it will probably come down to the fact that other parts of the state had higher levels of infection recently. in december, january, february. that's more protective than the vaccine in the short run. >> natural immunity from covid is what ucsf stopped her is referring to. the idea that people in other areas of california already had the new variant of covid in recent months. >> the people who weren't exposed before are the people who are going to get exposed. that's why even within san francisco, the wealthiest

communities are being affected this proportionately now. >> communities that hadn't been previously had is hard. another possible reason for our 7.7 covid positivity rated san francisco? >> we test more than other places which is great. we still have testing sites. people are really aware. >> doctors agree. vaccines and boosters are keys going forward even for younger age groups that are now seeing higher transmission rates. >> a lot of people who are less vaccinated who haven't been boosted. in their 20's and 30's. that's where the transmission is going on. >> the good news is that despite these higher positivity rates in san francisco, state data shows hospitalizations remain low and we haven't seen the covid death here since mid april. doctors credit the vaccines and the boosters. >> we will have to learn to live with the virus. >> hopefully the models will

>> the man accused of attacking dave chapelle is facing several charges tonight. the l.a. district attorney's office says the 23-year-old didn't use a weapon and chapelle was not injured. he is being loaded into an ambulance there. instead, he will face misdemeanors. among them, battery and possession of a weapon with an intent to assault. the gun found was actually a fake and it's folding nice will -- nice was in a retracted position.

investors have a lot of ground to make up after the worst trading day of the year on wall street. the dow dropped more than 1000 points today. some experts call the losses and overcorrection to big gains yesterday on news of the federal reserve playing to increase its benchmark interest rate. abc chief business and economic correspondent explains what happened today and the impact it could have on long-term and short-term investment. >> this is a bit of reality setting in. the dow plunging more than 1000 points. the s&p 500, down 3.6% yesterday. the way wall street looks at this is that inflation is at historic highs right now. the jobs market is historically strong right now. the only path forward in order to keep prices from getting so far out of reach for typical american families is through more interest rate hikes. that ultimately can mean a

slower moving economy. that's what you see reflected in the stock market right now. it has been in the backdrop so much this year which is why you see the s&p 500 down more than 13%. if you had put $1000 into the market at the start of the year, today given those declines, you'd have about 806 he five dollars left. what's important to keep in mind is history. historically, the market returns about 9% on average each year and that's accounting for inflation which is why investing for the long term is what is so important. abc news, new york. >> there's a new partnership with a plan to reignite travel in the bay area. following the pandemic, experts say getting more people traveling is a spark the bay area economy desperately needs. the american hotel association spoke with the san jose and san francisco chambers of commerce

along with other organizations that promote travel to the bay area. they are all working together to strategize how to get more people to come back not just for leisure travel but also business travel. >> we know that connectivity increases productivity. we commissioned a study from san diego's university to talk about that. the businesses that are doing face to face meetings are going to do better in the long run. >> fewer people coming to the bay area means fewer jobs and hospitality. one expert says san jose needs to restore more than 14,000 hospitality industry jobs that were lost during the pandemic. the man who runs the san joaquin asparagus festival says he's moving forward with plans for a new garlic festival. he's planning to hold it august 13 and 14th at the san joaquin county fairgrounds. the gilroy garlic festival called off this year's event citing financial challenges but it says stockton isn't the successor of their event.

the promoter told abc 7 he tried to reach the gilroy organizers but they didn't call back. >> i have open arms, inviting everybody that was involved with the gilroy garlic festival. i want all their vendors and community support. let's work together to make this thing a great event again. >> he says he's planning to eventually bring the festival back to our area but he couldn't say where. his wildfire preparedness week and state leaders are urging californians to prepare for a challenging wildfire. the time to start is now. >> have a plan. have supplies like food, water, and emergency backup power. now in practice if i q8 and routes. >> this data spending billions to decrease the risk of wildfires but they say they will need the public's support. calfire says it's already seeing wildfire activity across the state.
