liz. hi, dan, and i'm a yes, this was called operation bulldog investigators. bait rental cars around the city with electronics left inside in the hopes, they'd be broken into investigators were then track where those stolen items were going. and many of them led to one small boba shop in the tenderloin. san francisco district attorney jason boudin today announced his office has uncovered a sophisticated car burglary operation believed to be operating out of an unsuspecting boba tea shop in the tenderloin. this is truly an international fencing ring that we have uncovered the da says 41 year old kwok lee whose wife owns quickly bubble tea cafe on larkin street was arrested monday after investigators found 130 boxes of stolen goods inside. the store. boudin says an over year long undercover. investigation that included leaving bait cars around the city let investigators to leave inside the bags. we left in these bait cars as i said. value products and also tracking devices that allowed us to both

follow electronically and in person. with eyes on the ground where the goods moved boudin says many of the items were traced to the boba shop where they were then shipped to places like, texas asia and europe these items on display here make up just a third of the electronics recovered at the boba shop the district attorney hopes to return some of these items to their owners. we developed this operation with the goal of not simply waiting for those arrests to come in the door, but also of dismantling the fencing operations that create so much demand for stolen property that make car break-ins profit the first place the bust is good timing for the embattled district attorney who is facing a recall next month many of boudin's critics have blamed his policies on a rise and property crime. dean is failing to do his job. there's a better way to keep san francisco safe today with the recall just weeks away the da took on a tough on crime tone now every single person who's considering committing one of those crimes on our streets will

have to contend with the fact that we're watching. we are watching we are coming for you and will be consequences if you commit crimes in our city. and the da says this investigation is part of a larger operation to crack down on these rings. his office is doing it in partnership with the american car rental association the group sf safe and homeland security the san francisco police department has assisted with intel gathering as for the suspect walk lee. he was arraigned in court today and he faces more than a dozen charges dan. i was for so many sick and tired of crime in this city. they're happy to see this today two questions for you. did the da give a sense of how many other businesses in san francisco? go maybe operating a similar schemes like this and a second question if someone recognizes one of the recovered items as their own, how can they get it back? right? so dan answer that first question. the da says they currently have numerous locations around the city under surveillance that they believe could be storage locations for stolen goods and fencing operations.

and as far as returning some of those stolen items, maybe some of our viewers recognize something as one of theirs the da says they are hoping to create a website that will allow people to browse. potentially retrieve those items good enough. thank you, liz. the city of the city council of san jose just unanimously voted to ban ghost guns in the city. this will ban residents from possessing manufacturing selling and distributing all guns without serial numbers police say 25% of illegal guns. they seize are ghost guns several california cities including san francisco oakland and san diego have already banned a ghost guns residents have 120 days to comply with the new ordinance also in san jose police released police police body cam security video today. the moments before an officer shot kayon green a police posted this edited video online today. it shows green backing out of the front door of a taqueria on march 27th in one image. you can see green holding the handgun. he had just wrestled away from a man inside from the restaurant

camera. you can see an officer approach green and then shoot him four times police identify the officer today as mark mcnamara a four year met member of the department green received non-life threatening in the district attorney will now determine whether the shooting was justified. san jose police are also conducting an internal investigation of an off-duty officer arrested on suspicion of dui. according to chp. the officer was involved in a two-car crash early friday morning on 880 just north of tennyson road in hayward. no one was injured but responding chp officers determined the driver was under the influence and arrested him so far. the officer has not been placed on administrative leave just last week. we learned a san jose police officer was being investigated for allegedly being under the influence while on duty and responding to the case of the kidnapped baby today is the first ever national fentanyl awareness day a new effort to call attention to a drug problem that is really growing at an alarming rate to help raise

awareness santa clara county officials joined the parents of teenagers who have died sadly of fentanyl overdoses to deliver a stark message about pills and street drugs laced with fentanyl just a few weeks ago. we seized 11,000 fent. pills that's enough fentanyl to kill everyone in our county. that's how dangerous a recent study in the journal of the american medical association suggests that fentanyl was involved in more than 75% of america's drug overdoses last year. a big contributor to the overdose crisis is fentanyl turning up in other drugs. sometimes without users even knowing it. so now an oakland-based nonprofit has created test kits to help prevent accidental fentanyl overdoses abc 7 news reporter stephanie sierra joins us live with the details steph. that's right. i'm offend check is trying to revolutionize drug testing putting test kits in the hands of those who need them. most the local nonprofit that

started right here in oakland is growing across, california and expanding to states it's a quick test that aims to save lives and it's selling out across the bay area. the demand is it's it's desperate. it's desper. allison heller and dean schold are the founders of fenchak and oakland bay's non-profit that's contracted with a canadian biotech lab to produce test strips that detect if fentanyl is in drugs their harm reduction mission started an alameda county and is now growing across the country as a culture we started to you covid testing at home. a lot of people are familiar with pregnancy tests or even testing their hot tub. this is really simple technology. depths are quick you mix the drug with water dip the test strip in the water for 15 seconds and wait five minutes for the results. even the tiniest amount of the drug will be detected as little as three grains of salt. there's 20 nanograms of fentanyl

per milliliter of water. it will show it as positive schold says these kits are being offered at bars restaurants our galleries book stores and even thrift shops. he says most venues are selling out of these containers at least two to times a week in the first quarter of 2021 we went through about 200 test strips. now each week we're going through over 2,000 fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and it is devastating youth according to the journal of american medicine from 2010 to 2019 around 500 kids aged 14 to 19 died from fentanyl across the us in 2021 that figure more than doubled to 1100 according to the california overdose surveillance dashboard as of 2020, san francisco county. reported the highest rate of fentanyl related over yes in the state 44.5 for every 100,000

the latest on the california water crisis and the increasing worry about. drought today east bay mud became the latest local water district to approve surcharges on water bills voting on an 8%
