complete stranger who risked her own safety that night to save her. turn down the volume. the new effort by the government to make sure the programs you watch are easy on your ears. and from the new investigation into ufos to the groom who got stuck in the elevator on his wedding day to some sticky news about chewing gum, it's wednesday, may 11th. good wednesday morning, everyone. we begin with a question that most americans are asking, when will prices start coming down? >> we could get some clues later this morning when the government releases its monthly report on inflation. it comes hours after the average price of gas in this country rose to an all-time high. president biden says he knows what can be done to bring down prices, but his critics aren't buying it. >> abc's justin finch begins our coverage from washington. justin, good morning. >> reporter: mona, good morning. some experts believe the worst of the current inflation crisis

is already behind us, but that doesn't mean prices will be falling any time soon. today's report from the government is expected to show that america's 40-year high inflation has already peaked. the big question now, when will prices start dropping? analysts predict the report will show an inflation rate of 8.1% last month. a decrease from 8.5% in march. but some economists warn core inflation, which excludes food and gas prices, could stay high for months. >> i want every american to know that i'm taking inflation very seriously. >> reporter: president biden says fighting inflation is his top domestic priority, but tuesday suggested things could still get work. >> how long do you think it will be until we see prices coming down? >> i'm not going to predict that. some say it's going to be -- it's going to increase next year, but there's sorries that say by the end of this

year you'll see it come down by the calendar year. i don't know. >> reporter: the president pointed to several steps his administration has taken to lower prices but blamed pandemic disruptions and the war in ukraine for rising prices. his critics say inflation also stems from the biden administration's overspending. >> he said today, for example, as you pointed out, that he bears no responsibility whatsoever for inflation. i think most americans are thinking, right, and jimmy hoffa died of natural causes. also the stripper really likes you. >> reporter: meanwhile, inflation is hammering voters ahead of november's midterm elections. like adele in california who recently turned to food assistance with grocery prices up 10% in the last year. >> my social security is what i live on, and sometimes i don't have enough food by the end of the month. >> reporter: this woman now working two jobs to cover the

cost of gas. >> i try to budget myself as much as i can. lately i mean i've been using the credit cards but i mean sometimes you got to do what you got to do. >> reporter: with the negative economic news piling up republicans are poised to take control of congress in the fall. >> we've got the highest gas prices ever. we got low labor participation. we got a gdp that's declining. so i mean he doesn't have any ideas. this was -- he was confusing. he put up no ideas of what he's going to get done. >> reporter: and today president biden heads to illinois where he's expected to announce steps to lower food prices. he's also considering lifting tariffs on chinese products to lower prices on those goods. mona. >> justin, thank you. the other big story overnight, former fugitive casey white who was the subject of an 11-day nationwide manhunt is back in alabama. the murder suspect was brought to court last night to face new charges after being captured in

southern indiana monday with a former jail officer who allegedly helped him escape. video shows the police chase that resulted in his arrest, the cadillac he and officer vicky white were in flipped over in a ditch. police say the crash foiled casey's plan for a shootout with officers. meanwhile, an autopsy confirms that vicky white died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. she was still in the cadillac when police arrived. >> all right. i'm going to go for the gun. put down your hand. >> grab the gun. >> reporter: authorities say the pair had several guns along with wigs for disguises and $29,000 in cash. house lawmakers approved $40 billion in new aid for ukraine. that's 7 billion more than president biden requested. a u.s. official now says up to 10 russian generals have been killed in the conflict. the u.s. director of national intelligence warns vladimir putin is preparing for a prolonged war and may turn to a nuclear threat as he struggles to refresh his ground forces.

>> and that may end up meaning that they have greater reliance, in effect, on asymmetric tools during this period so may rely more on cyber, nuclear, precision, et cetera, and that's obviously a shift in the way in which they are exercising their efforts for influence. >> meanwhile, president zelenskyy says russia's blockade of ports on the black sea could lead to a global food crisis. now to the drought emergency in the west. with water levels dropping to an all-time low, new restrictions are on the way. and they could be a wake-up call there. this morning, the surprising news from california. despite the historic drought, the state is using more water, not less. water usage rose 19% in march compared to the same period in 2020. and now unprecedented new water restrictions are being imposed affecting 4 million people in southern california where beginning next month outdoor watering will be limited to two days per week. >> we're three years into a

major drought, and the first three months of this year were the driest ever recorded in california. >> reporter: and the california senate is going one step further passing a bill to limit indoor water usage. right now the state standard for daily indoor usage is 55 gallons per person. under the bill that would be lowered to 42 gallons in the coming years. in the meantime, lake mead, which supplies water to seven states, is evaporating before our eyes with levels dropping 170 feet since the 1980s. >> with that white line to remind us what full is, it's definitely -- it's obvious something has changed. >> reporter: the low water level now revealing at least two bodies, one dating back decades. the person had been shot and was stuffed in a barrel. >> it was kind of freaky. we had to keep questioning ourselves if this was really real or not. >> reporter: the discoveries are recalling the days of organized crime in nearby las vegas. oscar goodman, a former vegas mayor and defense attorney

for members of the mob tells the associated press, quote, there's no telling what we'll find in lake mead. it's not a bad place to dump a body. authorities are working to identify those remains. as for limping indoor water use, it still needs to be approved by the state assembly. a win and a loss for president trump after another set of republican primaries. west virginia congressional candidate alex mooney who was endorsed by trump won his race after his opponent took heat for supporting president biden's infrastructure bill. but in nebraska, the candidate trump supported in the governor's race lost. the sexual misconduct trial of celebrity chef mario batali has ended in a not guilty verdict. a boston judge rejected the claims of a woman who said batali forcibly kissed and groped her as they took selfies at a bar. the judge agreed with the defense that the accuser was motivated by money but he also criticized batali. >> mr. batali did not cover himself in glory on the night in question. his conduct and his appearance

and his demeanor were not befitting of a public person of his stature. complaining witness has significant credibility issues. >> batali still faces a civil lawsuit over that same incident. the fda is facing criticism over the shortage of baby formula. the issue is a voluntary recall back in february by abbott which is a major supplier of formula. one of abbott's production plants is still shut down. senator mitt romney is demanding the fda move faster to re-open supply lines. time now for a look at your wednesday weather. a wall of dust blew into amarillo, texas, right before severe thunderstorms arrived. those storms produced large hail and wind gusts up to 90 miles per hour but no reports of any injuries on the radar. more severe storms expected today in the dakotas and minnesota. an isolated tornado isn't being ruled out and rain and snow will linger in the rockies. checking today's high

zurg chain and the u-haul was overdue. you could say police busted a move. to a terrifying landing in florida after a pilot suffered a medical emergency. a passenger with no flying experience took over and landed the plane in palm beach, all thanks to an air traffic controller who gave him step by step instructions. the controller had never flown that specific model. he used this picture of the cockpit as a guide. >> i knew the plane was flying like any othere.i d k h ca.potl him how to reduce the power to land. i said okay. we're going to get to you a runway. what do you say now? he was passing the shoreline near boca. he said i'm on the ground. how do i turn this thing off? it felt really good to help somebody. he told me that he was going to go home tonight to see his pregnant wife. >> the controller and the passenger met on the tarmac and they exchanged a hug.

>> unbelievable! we turn now to a murder at sea. a man accused of killing his mother and his grandfather, all part of an alleged plot to seize the family's fortunate. >> reporter: this morning, a vermont man rescued at sea six years ago is now under arrest for the murder of his mother. >> i did not cause may mother's death. >> reporter: in 2016, nathan carmen was found floating on a life boat off martha's vineyard. he had been missing seven days after his fishing boat sank. his mom, linda carmen, also on that boat, was never found. prosecutors now say he killed his mother and intentionally sank the boat in order to inherit his family's estate. karm end spoke with abc news in 2017. >> i got on board the life raft and i was looking around. i was calling out to my mom. i did not see or hear my mom. >> reporter: carman, now 28, was also involve in his grandfather's death in 2013.

a multimillionaire was found shot in his connecticut home. a suspect never found. according to an indictment, carman devised a scheme to defraud his grandfather's estate and to obtain money and the murders were part of scheme. carman's murders say they're shocked by his arrest. >> we didn't even know. we didn't see it coming. we thought this was a civil issue about the money for all this time. we had no idea this was still going on. >> reporter: carman has denied any involvement. he's expected to face a judge today on murder and fraud charges and could face a possible life sentence if convicted. mona? andrew? >> thank you. coming up, the u.s. soldier killed by a bear during a training exercise. >> first the attempted kidnapping caught on camera. a woman grabbed on the street. we hear from the woman who was driving by and came to the

severe weather sending a home into the sea. it happened along north carolina's outer banks during heavy coastal flooding this week. the strong seas took down another home in the same area. no injuries have been reported. new video in central florida. a lightning strike causing this house to burst into flames. you saw it there in the background. one witness said it sounded like a bomb exploded. no one was hurt. a deadly bear attack in alaska. a soldier was killed by the bear during a training exercising dur a base in anchorage. the search for the bear is ongoing. no information about the soldier was released. to the attempted kidnapping caught on camera. the suspect is in custody. now we're hearing from the woman who is being dragged down the street until a complete stranger came to her rescue. >> so happy. >> reporter: she is speaking through an interpreter told our boston affiliate wcbb she is

feeling safe enough to identify herself now that the man accused of trying to be a duct her in this boston suburb sunday night is in custody. the man ripping off her shirt. trying to drag her off. a good samaritan saw her fighting back and pulled over to call for help. >> the victim, i'm sure you've seen the video. put up the fight of her life. luckily she was able to get the stance from the 911 caller who pulled over and put herself into harm's way, potentially acting without due regard for her safety. >> reporter: the good samaritan said men doza did everything right. >> she knew to get to the light and to the side of the road so somebody could help her. she made it possible for me to help her. >> reporter: police say it was a random attack. a crime of opportunity. the surveillance video prompted the public to call in times leading to the arrest of the 26-year-old suspect. >> it felt like it was lifted off my chest. it has been very emotional the last couple days knowing that he's still out there. he could have done to it anybody else.
