an evil lie with a future's worth of harm. to the world, now you know. so sound the alarm. news. dan: wind fueled fury kicks off fire evacuations in southern california tonight. crews are trying to fight off a fire that has exploded in size and destroyed at least 20 homes. thank you for joining us. i am dan ashley. ama: and i am ama daetz. this has zero in on laguna niguel, where a community of 100 homes is threatened. the fire started this afternoon near a fire treatment plant. in one hour it grew from 30 acres to 200. flames moved into steep terrain

that is hard for crews to access. >> the big difference is, and we are seeing it again, with the climate change. that fuels the beds around california that are so dry that a fire like this is going to be more commonplace. dan: firefighters say they have made some headway today and expect to make more in the coming days. so far there are no reported deaths. crews are still investigating what sparked this fire. ama: here now with the latest coastal conditions is sandhya patel. sandhya: winds have eased compared to earlier when they were 25 to 30 miles per hour. the humidity is up 75%. the winds are still gusty out of the west. they will pick up again tomorrow afternoon and evening.

hopefully the crews make great progress during the overnight hours. just north of laguna niguel we have wind advisories until 3:00 a.m. tomorrow. look at the satellite picture from earlier tonight. the smoke plume traveled four miles as that was driven by the winds. the laguna niguel area is under a moderate drought and you will notice surrounding areas in severe drought though that is not helping the situation. dan: thank you. >> several small fires in the bay area. we found a fire burning near 90 8th avenue. smoke was blowing onto the freeway but firefighters quickly doused those flames. not far from there in san leandro, a fire in a homeless camp spread to the fences of homes. flames charged grass than the

wetlands preserve near antioch. contra costa fire county -- county fire called in. crews got the fire under control within a couple of hours. this morning in east contra costa county, wind driven fire burned two acres in oakland. this was sparked by equipment being used by a contractor clearing the brush. one home in the area was threatened. we are sending alerts like this one all day long on our abc 7 news mobile app. users were able to stay up-to-date on fires. if you want notifications like these, download the app from the app store. ama: a disappointing night for the warriors in memphis. sports anchor chris alvarez has a recap of what went wrong. chris: a lot went wrong. game five was not going to be

san francisco for game six on saturday night. j.r. stone was at the watch party tonight. j.r.: tough night for the golden state warriors but also a kind -- a tough night for golden state warriors fans who packed this area outside of the chase center. those with the warriors tell me they are over capacity. over 3000 people came to cheer the squad on from a distance, but the time that the fourth quarter rolled around, many of those folks left. that is how ugly of a game this was. we talked with fans, many of them holding out hope for friday but others just in shock over what they saw on wednesday night. >> we are leaving. >> there are still eight minutes left. >> was it's the worst loss you have ever seen? >> in my 14 years, yes.

moving on, fears of a summers surge are topping our covid headlines tonight. officials say 37 states have seen cases increase by 10% over the past week. state media in north korea says the country is experiencing its first covid outbreak of the pandemic. the nation has implemented an out -- a lockdown. moderna announced today it has completed submissions to the fda seeking a emergency use authorization for a vaccine for children ages six months to 17. they are hoping to get the green light to vaccinate children between those ages. ama: there is a call to action for more than 60 civil-rights and safety trafficking groups. data shows black people are six to 10 times more likely to be stopped by police than white people and 12 times more likely to be subjected to the use of force. a new policy proposal was

discussed at the san francisco police commission meeting tonight. it bans people from being pulled over for a dozen of offenses. >> a lot of people have things hanging from their rearview mirrors and i have had friends who have been stopped for this reason alone. ama: the police officers union argues traffic stops save lives because they can lead to the seizure of all people -- seizure of illegal guns. dan: people are being jolted awake by blaring train horns. a partial quiet hours are in place. how this works. >> a bustling train track has been blaring horns for residents living and sleeping near this

governor newsom wants to use taxpayer money to help pay for abortions for women who cannot afford them. he is proposing eight $125 million health package. it would remove barriers to services and help cover the cost of uninsured patients. california already covers for some abortions through medicaid, but there are some women who do not have private health insurance. the state would also offer services to relocate for antiabortion states. the governor will give more details on friday. dan: demolition has begun for a building on the south bay which has reminded as a -- has served as a reminder of tragedy and loss. this is at the santa clara railyard in san jose. 10 people were killed during this shooting.
