center of the milky way. what it could teach us about our galaxy. ♪ black hole sun won't you come won't you come ♪ good friday morning, everyone. i'm mona kosar abdi. >> and i'm phil lipof in for andrew. we begin this morning with a critical shortage of baby formula all across the country. >> parents are finding more store shelves empty as the white house scrambles to take new action while facing a wave of criticism. this morning, the fda is looking at ways to import more baby formula to ease the worsening shortage here in the u.s. with the possibility of loosening import restrictions. ireland, the netherlands and chile are now identified as potential sources for more formula. >> we're going to work with manufacturers. we'll import more to expedite this as quickly as possible. >> reporter: president biden thursday said he spoke with manufacturers and the ceos of target and walmart about ways to

boost supplies. the out of stock rate for baby formula in the u.s. was more than 40% at the beginning of the month. >> my sister picked me some up in arvada, yesterday. my dad in thornton the other day. >> reporter: ashley lane is one of the many moms struggling to find the frmula her infant son need. >> there was nothing left on the entire shelf. i took a picture and sent it home. and i was like, thank goodness we have a couple cans left. >> reporter: when asked why the administration has not acted sooner, the white house said efforts had been under way for months. >> the steps the president took today are an acknowledgement and a recognition that more needs to be done, that we do not want parents, mothers, families out there to be stressed and worried about feeding their babies. >> this is not a third world country. this should never happen in the united states of america. >> reporter: the outcry is providing republicans with another line of attack against the biden administration. minority leader mitch mcconnell on the senate floor yesterday read letters from worried parents. >> we've been struggling to get formula for our granddaughter

for months now. the situation has turned dire. >> reporter: and now texas governor greg abbott is calling the biden administration reckless for providing migrants at the border with baby formula. a texas congresswoman showed this image of a shelf full of formula. the photo was taken at a processing center. these children, all children deserve access to a full life including food, shelter and love. the shortage is blamed in part on a recall back in february. the affected plant in michigan should come back online soon but it could take up to ten weeks for supplies to be restocked. a court hearing today could determine whether there's another surge of migrants at the dedehe fate le2 e in lisay cou if title 42 is lifted, we're told up to 18,000 migrants per day are expected to cross into the u.s. former p

facing a new investigation. this time concerning how he handled classified documents. meanwhile, a major new step in the capitol riot investigation. five republican members of congress including the man who ulsoon be speaker of the house have been subpoenaed. abc's justin finch is following both investigations and is live from washington. justin, go morning. >> reporter: mona, good morning. the january 6th committee initially sent those five house republicans letters requesting cooperation and all refused and now the committee awaits their responses to its subpoenas. that as a new federal probe focused on former president trump gets under way. today, the justice department searching for answers after boxloads of classified documents were reportedly found at former president trump's mar-a-lago estate. those sensitive documents discovered after trump left the white house. the investigation issuing at least one subpoena to the national archives requesting interviews from former trump aides and convening a grand jury.

a trump spokesperson responding saying in part, president trump consistently handled all documents in accordance with applicable law and regulations. meantime, on capitol hill, the january 6th committee issuing new subpoenas to four house republicans and housrity leader kevin mccarthy. mccarthy digging in his heels thursday. >> it seems as though they just want to go after their political opponents. >> reporter: days after the capitol riot, mccarthy heard on phone recordings telling republicans trump bore some responsibility for the violence. >> i've had it with this guy. what he did is unacceptable. nobody can defend that and nobody should defend it. >> reporter: also on that call top republican january 6th committee member liz cheney saying last year mccarthy's testimony is valuable. >> should kevin mccarthy be willing to speak -- testify before that commission? >> he absolutely should and i wouldn't be surprised if he were

threatening military retaliation if neighboring finland follows through and joins nato. finnish leaders say vladimir putin's war in ukraine is what's driving them into the nato fold. sweden is also expected to apply to join the alliance. a u.s. official says russia has abducted thousands of ukrainians and sent them to so-called filtration camps. that's where they're questioned about potential ties to the government or military and according to the u.n. at least 100 children were killed in ukraine just last month. meanwhile, u.s. officials say russia is now being forced to use semiconductor chips from dishwasher and refrigerators in their military equipment all because of u.s. sanctions and global shortages. now to americans paying the price as gas prices skyrocket.ar whilpumpin your own gas is el >> reporter: as gas prices break more records across the country,

customers doing anything they can to save at the pump. >> i drive my motorcycle more than i used to. it's like $10 to fill the whole thing. >> reporter: gasoline averaging $4.42 a gallon. california with the highest at $5.85 a gallon. today in new jersey, 75 gas stations will lower their prices by up to 20 cents a gallon to show customers how much they'd save if proposed legislation is passed allowing self-serve. gas stations in new jersey are not allowed to let customers pump their own gas. >> i like pumping it myself. yeah, i don't mind. >> reporter: it's not just regular gasoline that's fueling concern. diesel is now in short supply on the east coast, the lowest seasonal inventory on record. as a result, prices in the east are up 63% this year to about $5.90 a gallon. major trucking companies and the dielgher costs will likel consers.

in dallas, texas, thieves were caught stealing 80 gallons of diesel using electronic devices which police say allowed them to pump as much gas as they wanted. >> i'm not surprised at all. i expect that and we'll be hearing more stories as long to increase u.s. crude production, but thursday it canceled three oil and gas leases in the gulf of mexico and off alaska removing millions of acres for possible drilling. the white house blames a lack of industry interest as well as conflicting court rulings. republicans say the cancellation of those leases will hurt consumers and national security. but the interior secretary says the oil industry already has about 9,000 unused drilling permits. andrea fujii, abc news, new york. >> andrea, thank you. time now for a look at your friday weather. this powerful dust storm turned deadly in south dakota. the wall of dust rolled into

back now with a migrant tragedy near puerto rico. 11 people are dead after their boat they were in capsized. 31 others were rescued. the coast guard said the victims were from haiti and the dominican republic. the army identified the soldier killed by a bear in alaska. 30-year-old staff sergeant seth plant was from st. augustine, florida. his commander says plant served as an inspiration to everyone who knew him. the bear attacked him at a military training site in anchorage. we turn to the images that could change what we know about our galaxy and show what scientists as a gentle giant at the center of the milky way. this morning this glimpse at a black hole is shedding new light on our galaxy. a team of more than 300 researchers now revealing the first images of sagittarius a-star, what's called a super massive black hole at the center of the milky way. this image while blurry is helping paint a clear picture of how these anomalies work.

>> magnetic fields can tell us how the black hole eats gas and ejects possibly an outflow. >> reporter: it comes from the so-called event horizon telescopes, a network of 11 radio telescopes strategically positioned around the world that together create hyper-detailed images. >> the result was a telescope almost the size of the earth, an instrument so powerful it could see details as small as a doughnut on the moon. >> reporter: the telescopes captured the first ever image of a black hole in 2019. >> we were all amazed that the image of sagittarius a-star looked so similar. this similarity reveals to us a key aspect of black holes. no matter their size, or the environment they live in, once you arrive at the edge of a black hole, gravity takes over. >> reporter: that black hole is known as m-87, and it's about 55 million light-years away. sagittarius a-star on the other hand is only 27,000 light-years from earth. >> going from one to two is a

game changer but the second being in our backyard, that makes it excellent for us to gain information. >> reporter: thanks to the images we now know the black hole in our galaxy has a mass of about 4 million times that of the sun and we also know it takes particles about four minutes to make a full orbit. that powerful rotation along with the spinning basically acts like the glue that holds the galaxy together. pretty cool stuff. scientists say we've known about the existence of a massive object in our galaxy since 1974, but this image is the first visual confirmation that it's a black hole. then there's this. for the first time plants have been grown in soil from the moon. the soil was brought to earth during nasa's apollo program. now scientists have used it to grow a small weed. the technology used in the experiment could help astronauts on future moon missions. coming up, surprising news about the horse that pulled off that shocking upset at the kentucky derby. also just ahead, the

about rybelsus® today. a fiery explosion on this highway in ohio. a dump truck veered off interstate 77, then burst into flames after hitting a transportation department vehicle. both drivers are in the hospital, and the cause of that crash is under investigation. we are now hearing from the driver seen having a medical emergency in the middle of a florida intersection. she is reuniting with the strangers who saved her. >> i don't know how to thank them. i just don't have the words. >> reporter: this morning the woman rescued by a group of good samaritans speaking out, praising the heroic efforts of the strangers who likely saved her life. >> i wish i was a millionaire. i'd buy them all a boat or a house or something. >> reporter: it all began when laurie rabyor suffered a medical emergency while driving home from work in boynton beach, florida. her car rolling into the busy intersection as she lay unconscious behind the wheel. >> the only thing i was trying to do it's open the door and put

it in parking and see if she was alive or not. >> reporter: her co-worker janette rivera in a nearby car saw something was wrong and risked her own life by sprinting into the street and stopping oncoming traffic. >> i just start running and tell everybody move out of the way, move out of the way. >> reporter: soon six more people jumped out of their cars and into action. when they couldn't wake rabyor from outside the locked car, they worked to break in. one man using a dumbbell to shatter the window so they could pull her out while someone else called 911. >> laurie? laurie? >> blood pressure is the only -- she's opening her eyes. okay. >> laurie? >> reporter: just one week later rabyor is back to work and says she's humbled by the efforts of everyone who came to her rescue. >> i don't know what to say to them except thank you and give them a hug like i've been hugging her all week. >> she'll have a chance to. today she will be reunited with the full team of heroes. the police department also plans to honor them. two pilots have now lost

their license to fly after this failed stunt in mid-air last month. they were supposed to switch planes in the sky over arizona, but one plane went out of control and crashed. the pilot parachuted to the ground. the faa called the stunt careless and reckless. one pilot was also fined. the horse that pulled off that shocking upset at the kentucky derby will not be racing in next week's preakness. rich strike's owner says the horse will be getting some much-needed rest but he will be back on the track for next month's belmont stakes. in the nba playoffs the mavericks won last night, forcing a game 7 against the suns. and the heat finished off the sixers. 76ers, i should said. coming up, the brewing controversy over beer prices at the a major airport. also just the
