so sound the alarm. announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. liz: right now on abc seven mornings, marching for abortion rights, the coast-to-coast rallies happening today, including here in san francisco. good morning, it is saturday, may 14. things for joining us. let's take a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa: almost 60 in santa cruz. we see tons of sun, so a nice day on the way. closer to home it will be cooler. 65 downtown, 60 four in mountain view. half moon bay with the fog at 50. we will have about 70 downtown.

already in the lower 60's in santa rosa, lower 70's in fairfield. the quick warm-up is bringing us anywhere between five degrees warmer in the warmest locations, but the coast is certainly cooler. a pretty view, not much of a breeze. upper 60's to near 80 bayshore and 90 inland. it will be a one-day event. we will get more fog, more of a breeze for the second half of the weekend. we will talk about that in detail. liz: thousands of people are expected to march across the country for abortion rights today. in the bay area women's march sf is leading a march for reproductive justice event. this is video from previous women's marches. the martial start at and high streets. it will head down market street. abc 7 news will be following the march as it happens and you can get the latest on abc7news.com or our streaming app.

nearly 400 similar events are planned from coast-to-coast. at the nation's capital thousands are arriving for the bans off our body protest. justin: good morning. the first of the day's events are already getting underway on the national mall, where as 17,000 people are expected to gather for a rally before marching here to the u.s. supreme court. >> abortion is murder. justin: for more than a week, tensions flaring from coast-to-coast as abortion and antiabortion rights demonstrators take to the streets, even to some supreme court justices' doorstep. the bans off our bodies protest is happening outside the supreme court which is secured with

non-scalable fencing. >> public sentiment is everything. justin: house speaker nancy pelosi and house democrats expressing anger about the leaked draft opinion. judy chu appearing to single out senate democrat joe manchin and republican senators lisa murkowski and susan collins for voting down a measure wednesday that would have codified abortion rights into federal law. >> the two so-called pro-choice republicans who voted against whipa because they said that our bill goes too far. well, that's not true stop justin: if the supreme court overturns roe, 26 states could move quickly to severely restrict or outright ban access to abortion, including arkansas, which would make an exception only of a woman's health is at risk. >> every state will make a different determination based upon the values of that state. i think what our constitution is designed from the beginning is to return that authority to the states.

justin: this morning, hundreds of bans off our bodies protest or happening across the country. organizers declaring may 14 a national day of action. justin finch, abc 7 news. liz: thank you. police are examining a key piece of evidence in the disappearance of alexis gage. the 24-year-old woman who was last seen in late january. performance later police say that they found her on case in antioch. family and friends confirm that this is hers. investigators suspect that the man in this surveillance video got rid of the phone case as he was walking away from her car on the day of her disappearance. if you recognize him, call oakland police. there is a $10,000 release to find alexis' location. she was last seen in antioch on january 26 and her car was found the next day with the keys inside.

now to the pandemic and a somber covid milestone in california. the state has surpassed 90,000 deaths from the virus, more than any other state. the white house is preparing a plan to ration covid vaccines of congress cannot pass a new pandemic spending bill. republicans are opposed to the $10 billion cost. the american academy of pediatrics is urging the fda dutifully to its review for vaccine for children under five. it says families have waited for a long time for safe, effective vaccine for their kids. public health officials are once again calling on all of us to start masking up indoors. the plea to put on a mask comes as covid cases sore. tara campbell tells us that the question now is will we see a mandate? tara: mask up is the message from the majority of the bay area's public health departments. >> piercing four times higher case rates than in april, virus

in our sewer sheds and wastewater. tara: matt willis is one of 12 officers making an official recommendation on friday for people to put on their masks indoors, citing a surge in covid cases fueled by the highly contagious omicron subvariant. the bay area has the highest infection rates in the state. >> this is a signal to us when we are out and about in the community are risk of being exposed is even higher than the past few weeks. that was for the recommendation to cover their faces indoors of inside public settings. tara: the golden gate restaurant association hopes that it stays not mandating masks. >> people feel given the vaccination members in san francisco that perhaps it is not necessary. tara: the majority of restaurants have dropped mask requirements for people eating indoors. >> if an mask mandate was

, we would support it. >> the thing that i'm watching closely in terms of potential mandates is what's happening in the hospital. tara: if cases go up, dr. patel worries that hospitalizations are inevitable. >> we start to really get an increase in cases, even with a small percentage of people getting hospitalized, hospitalizations will still go up. tara: that is when the concern kicks in. >> we are worried about a strain on the health care system, because guess what, we haven't fixed that. tara: tara campbell, abc7news. liz: the warriors are back in the western conference finals for the sixth time in eight years. they closed out the memphis grizzlies in game six. game six, klay was leading the warriors with 30 points and steph curry got hot in the fourth quarter. they pulled away, 110-106.

demonic spirit out of the child. they thought that she was possessed by a demon because she cried multiple times throughout the night. her grandfather is a pastor at the church. during the alleged exorcism she was tortured and held against her will for 12 hours. days before her arrest the mother spoke in vague terms about her daughter's death in a youtube video. >> i know what happened to her. how she passed away. when i tell you guys how she passed away and the people who know, i am being 100%. liz: all three suspects are expected to appear before a judge on june 13 and could face 25 years to life in prison. teachers are being credited with helping save people from an apartment fire in san francisco. seven people were hurt, to critically. one person was taken to a burn treatment center. cepheohoou aon re s i srted on

drugs, stolen goods, and $30,000 in cash. the san mateo county sheriffs office says is part of an investigation into a crime syndicate operating in san mateo and san francisco counties. some of the suspects moved into a deceased person's home and turned it into a stash house. graffiti found in a middle school bathroom in palo alto is being investigated as a hate crime. the letters kkk were written on bathroom walls and toilet paper dispensers at fletcher middle school on two different days this week. the police believe that the same person is likely responsible.a a palo alto elementary school in january. no arrests have been made in either case. there's a new development in the case of a security guard that was killed during the robbery of a tv news crew. the suspect pled not guilty to killing the former officer. the 25-year-old is charged with

murder, attempted robbery, and assault with a firearm. investigators believe that he was the one who opened fire in downtown oakland last year. two others have also been arrested. it is an historic day for oakland. a federal judge has rolled the city's police department can move towards ending almost two decades of federal oversight that started in 2000 when four officers were accused of brutalizing people in oakland neighborhoods. a settlement require the department to enact 52 reform measures under the guidance of a federal judge and outside observers. the judge says that the city is nearly in full compliance. civil rights attorney john burris was one of the original on the case. >> a big issue. people being stopped unnecessarily. those people would not know in the future that there was a time that they would get stopped. not only would they get stopped, they would be searched and handcuffed for reasons that were

unnecessary or unrelated. liz: the department is now on probation for a year to see if they can sustain the reforms. the solar system is putting on a spectacular show this weekend. tomorrow night you will be treated to a colorful total lunar eclipse. you have to look east around sunset as the moon is rising. you will pass through earth's shadow. the sun's rays will be refracted and turn the moon a reddish copper color. >> what you are seeing when that happens is the projection of every sunrise and sunset on the earth on the surface of the moon. the photons from the sun are getting to the earth's atmosphere like a prism refracting. just the red light projected onto the moon's surface, bouncing off the moon and into your eye. liz: the best moment to watch will be around 9:30 tomorrow night. the moon will stay a reddish color for about an hour and a half. we have to cross our fingers

liz: now an update on a story about a woman who was stuck in an elevator that was overdue for a state safety inspection. an inspector found enough issues with the elevator and it had to be taken out of service. melanie woodrow has the update and new video of another group of people stuck in an elevator that was overdue for inspection at a popular concert venue. >> it took requests in 2021 and 2022 as well as calls from abc 7 news for the department of industrial relations to dispatch someone to inspect the elevator she was stuck on for an hour. >> i called for help, i screamed. melanie: prior to her being

stuck weeks ago the elevator was last inspected june 2019. after abc7news uncovered a backlog of state safety inspections across san francisco, the department of industrial relations tells the i team that the inspector found four issues with the elevator, which warranted its removal from service. the elevator was red tagged until corrections could be made. >> chain on you. this melanie: could be prevented. melanie:cal osha recognizes the need for inspectors and hiring is a priority. 10 people got stuck at the masonic after a concert in february. >> we are all stuck in here after this concert. melanie: according to a permit inside of the elevator it was last inspected of march 2016. >> there was a pregnant lady on the elevator with us. myself and my girlfriend suffer

from anxiety. melanie: the elevator has been inspected more recently. the masonic provided a permit for the same elevator that says it was last inspected in february of 2020. it is overdue for a state safety inspection by more than a year. this letter was sent three days after rodriguez was stuck that says the inspired permit is valid until an elevator inspector can be dispatched. abc7news has been told that elevators are required to be properly serviced and maintained by the building owner and their maintenance company even when operating with expired permits. >> they were reaching out to a local tech in the area on sunday night at 10:45. it seemed fairly impossible. melanie: firefighters rescued the group about an hour later. >> definitely a sign of relief. melanie: melanie woodrow, abc7news. liz: if you would like to see a story investigated you can contact the i team or call.

make it available, rolling out measures that gives families on government assistance the ability to buy other brands of formula, cracking down on price gouging and hoarding, and importing supply. pres. biden: i think we will make significant progress shortly. owen: the heightened demands and shortage may last t the ar. about 40% of formula is out of stock, leaving empty shelves at stores across the country, some forced to limit purchases per customer. the lack of product is due in the recall of formula manufactured at a plant in sturgis, michigan after two infants died of a bacterial infection in late february. an investigation found no evidence linking the infections to its michigan plant. abbott says as soon as the fda gives them the green light production could start in two weeks. the house oversight committee launched an investigation into

the shortage, requesting records from four of the largest manufacturers of baby formula. >> with regard to abbott, they have cornered the market. part of the reason for the shortage is the consolidation of the industry. in this situation where they have to recall their product, thereby creating a crisis and shortage in the supply. owen: first time mom olivia gates in spokane says that she is struggling to find a specialized formula for nine-month-old emma. >> my husband and i have been literally driving hundreds of miles and having formula shipped to us by friends and family. owen: other parents are turning to milk banks. >> the baby doesn't understand the shortages. she just knows thashe's hungry. owen the production act is on the table to address shortages. abbott says that once they get the green light from the fda it

could take about two weeks for them to start production. six to eight weeks for parents to see the products on shelves. abc news, atlanta. liz: we found a mom in san jose who is helping friends with this issue. she has made it her full-time job to find baby formula for her son and shares it with others. she isn't able to breast-feed, so if she doesn't have formula she says that her baby won't eat . one option is contacting strangers on social media and paying them through ben miles. >> i am having formula shipped from oklahoma, kentucky, sacramento. i recently looked into buying from canada. liz: some people are able to turn to the mother's milk bank in san jose. the nonprofit accepts donations

and offers the milk to infants in need, but most of the recipients are preemies and neonatal care. we are learning details about governor newsom's revised budget proposal that includes plans for how to best spend a record $97.5 billion surplus. it includes $128 billion in education spending from transitional in regard to high school that works out to a little less than $23,000 per student. another $23 billion will be in the state's rainy day fund to draw from the next time that the economy slows. 18 billion dollars will provide financial relief for californians hardest hit by inflation. $2.5 billion for housing, including $500 million to fund the conversion of vacant malls and storefronts into homes. >> all of that open space and parking lots themselves that are now open and vacant, of course these remarkable vestiges to a

world that is radically changing. the old shopping mall. we want to look to see what we can do in terms of converting them into office buildings and housing. liz: the governor is proposing spending more on climate-driven problems like wildfires and drought, 9.5 billion dollars to funding opposed in january to early $2 billion. people will move into a new homeless shelter next week that is named in honor of alex trebek. the ribbon-cutting for the trebek center was held in the northridge center of los angeles. for decades the building was a rollerskating rink. alex trebek's family donated have a million dollars to help a million dollars to help nonprofit purchase it and convert it into a center with more than 100 beds. >> somehow, someway i know that alex is aware of this center. i know that he had a strong conviction and determination in his own way to make it work. liz: the first residents move in

starting tuesday. a blueprint for joy was the theme of the make-a-wish greater bay area gala in san francisco. there was a virtual program and in person one at the hyatt regency. money raised will fund a life changing wishes for critically ill children. last year's event raised enough to grant more than 44 wishes. last night's goal was 550,000 dollars, which would mean 55 wishes. in the east bay, and acclaimed cambodian restaurant in oakland is closing in the fruitville neighborhood. according to the chronicle, it is moving to a new location because the current lease is up. last night was the final night of service. the restaurant rot cambodian culture cuisine to the bay area with dishes like noodle soup, porkchops, and traditional dishes. black restaurant week is

it's going to be hot, but how hot? lisa: even for san francisco you will feel it. with the sea breeze coming in late in the day, it will get breezy and gusty in spots, but it will still be warmer than yesterday. in the 60's to near 70 downtown and you can see how sunny it is. upper 50's, 50 nine in oakland. san jose at 63. low 50's at half moon bay and the fog will scatter temporarily, but the sea breeze and the fog comes back into play. san jose is a warm spot and to the 80's. 63 in santa rosa. looking at 70 by the delta. 67 in concord. you can see a little bit of that marine layer. it will be confined to the shoreline if you have a little fog, but temperatures a mile or two away will be warming up because the sea breeze isn't really getting into full swing until late in the day, and then

more so into sunday. monday looks to be the coolest. in san jose we should see about 73 today. mid 80's today. mid 70's tomorrow. monday is the coolest, about 71. tuesday and wednesday, a little bit of a bump up in temperatures. from 83 in santa clara to 87 in morgan hill. 88 in gilroy. on the peninsula we don't get the sea breeze until late, so you have the low 80's in los altos. redwood city about 81. a nice afternoon at 76 in san mateo. some patchy sun at the coast, but in the north bay it should be sunny and gusty through the afternoon. 85 in novato. warming up to the 80's towards castro valley. 76 in berkeley. hercules about 78.

inland is where it's getting toasty. from 85 in san ramon to 90 in pittsburgh. with the clearer cons it ulde eclipse, but we will sl have the fog tonight. more fog tomorrow, so the conditions aren't ideal. looking towards the eastern horizon, we will be looking from 8:30 to nine: 30 where you could see the eclipse. away from the fog in the city lights and ending before 11:00. there is a chance that some neighborhoods around the bay could get a glimpse of that. it should be a pretty view. overall the fog will mess it up for many of us. the accuweather forecast, 60 at the coastline, upper 70's at the bayshore, 90's inland. tomorrow will be another nice day, but not as hot. we will have the onshore flow each day through the week ahead ringing temperatures down. one of the cooler days would be monday, tuesday, wednesday.

anchored on the surface of two ponds at the city's wastewater treatment facility. while they are floating they are also supplying roughly 8% of the city's electrical needs. combined with renewable energy they produce the title of the wine country sustainable city. >> when we combine it with our geothermal resources, we are looking at close to 50% renewable. mike: it is innovation that sprung in part from necessity. the shade provided by the panels cuts down on algae growing in the treated water that is used to irrigate surrounding vineyards. >> it made the water better. i have happy customers. we are serving almost 1000 acres of vineyard. mike: the multiple benefits of the water surface solar system are catching on. in the central valley, turlock is getting set to cover a local irrigation canal with solar panels for similar reasons.

open its first ever relaunch reverse roller coaster. gavin doyle told us all about it. >> i see it as the best disney attraction in 10 years. it is a storytelling roller coaster that brings in the fun music of guardians of the galaxy. liz: it is one of the largest fully enclosed coasters in the world, and it officially opens may 20 seventh. disney is the parent company of abc 7. you can ride the rides at the contra costa county fair this weekend. it is in antioch for the first time since the pandemic. you will find food booths and performances all weekend. organizers say that staffing has been a challenge. they were not able to find as many workers as in the past, so the lines might be longer than normal. the fair opens at noon today and tomorrow. let's get a final check on the forecast. lisa: a lot of sunshine out there right now. temperatures are approaching the low 60's in some of the bayshore communities.
