>> live, breaking news. >> one or more of the congregants did happen to point heroically. >> a deadly shooting inside a church in southern california. people inside took action to stop the gunmen. thank you for joining us for the special edition of abc7news. it shooting inside a church in orange county has left at least one person dead and five injured. four critically. it happened at the geneva presbyterian church in laguna woods this afternoon. deputies responded to a call of shots fired at a lunch following morning service. they were -- recovered two guns at the scene and token asian man in his 60's into custody. the majority of those inside

were believed to be of taiwanese dissent. members of the congregation showed exceptional heroism and bravery when they restrained the gunman. >> a group of churchgoers detained him and tied his legs with an extension cord and confiscated at least two weapons from him. >> the fbi and atf are investigating. they are interviewing people who were at that lunch. and more developing news on the mass shooting in buffalo that police say was a racist hate crime. the suspected gunman threatened a shooting at his high school last year. he was sent for a mental health evaluation that lasted a day and a half. the president and first lady will travel to buffalo to grieve with the community there. the gunman fired 50 rounds in the supermarket. derek waller in new york spoke to a woman who dodged the bullets. >> i thought i was going to die right there on the floor.

i got up somehow, lost my shoes, my keys, everything flew off of me. reporter: she recounted the moments after someone started shooting inside the top supermarket on saturday. the customer service lead works in the store with her 20-year-old daughter who became separated in the chaos. what was it like when you were finally reunited? >> i did not want to let her go. you see how a onto him. i held onto her. reporter: her cell phone remains in the store which is still a crime scene. victims targeted for the color of their skin, investigators say. 10 people died. >> we will stand together, hold each other, but this is unacceptable. reporter: outside tops, a prayer vigil turned protest demanding change. >> what is the problem? what is the underlying roots of hate? is it haiti?

the nonsense they are spewing out? it is something. reporter: the accused gunman payton gendron is not from buffalo. he traveled 200 miles from conklin new york, planning the attack for months. he purchased to the ar-15 rifle legally but attached an extended magazine illegal in new york but easy to find elsewhere. the attack centered on a theory that white people are being replaced according to a 180 page document found online believed to be written by the alleged shooter months ago. so why was it not forwarded to police? >> social media companies have to be able to monitor keywords and then notify us. >> this was calculated, it was cruel, it was very intentional. reporter: the governor has ordered flags at half staff. the suspect is facing life in prison for first degree murder charges, but there could also be federal hate crime charges as well.

in buffalo, new york, i'm derek waller for abc7news. >> the buffalo attack has police department's across the bay area on alert. the san francisco police department has increased patrols in districts with black houses of worship. they are also working with local law enforcement partners to identify any credible threats. the oakland police department says it will, quote, remain vigilant and continue to assess security levels as needed. in the east bay, a search for an arsonist after three fires ignited along highway four near pittsburgh. this happened near the intersection of san marco boulevard. one witness has provided a description of the suspect to investigators. last tuesday police arrested four people in connection with 33 small brush fires started last weekend between concord and antioch. . live music is back at levi's stadium. concerts return tonight after a nearly three year pandemic paused. coldplay is performing to a sold-out crowd while her is

opening the show. tonight's concert kicks off the stadium's biggest concert season in its history. there will be six shows through november. that is good news for businesses in the area looking for a boost from concert crowds. you could call it a san francisco legacy. the bay to breakers race returned after a two-year covid hiatus. runners and walkers and those just taking in the scene made their way through some of the cities iconic neighborhoods. ryan curry spoke with some of the 18,000 some people who registered for the race. reporter: one of the iconic san francisco events is back. bay to breakers made its return to the city following postponement during the pandemic. the long-standing transition -- tradition is something runners were eager to see return. >> it is a special energy. i have not felt this in a couple years. reporter: it only took a half-hour before the first

runners started crossing the finish line. >> it was perfect and a lot of good costumes. reporter: beta breakers brings out the unique side of san francisco. >> it was fun, it was hot in this. reporter: even the ones committed to running the race were not afraid to do it wearing wacky costumes. >> it was fun. >> at some point i was running with the pack of waldos, they were chained to each other and they were pushing me. they were fast. reporter: as it goes on. >> all kinds of folk. reporter: the weirder it gets. >> it has been a marvelous event so far. we hope to continue. reporter: about an hour into the race is when people stop taking it seriously and embrace the fun atmosphere which is why so many were excited to see it return. >> it was definitely worth it. i will probably be doing it next year. reporter: ryan curry, abc7news.

>> a first in the bay to breakers race, a new gender category for runners. there was a non-binary winner in today's race. julie vasquez of san francisco had the fastest time among women. congratulations to all the winners and participants. bart is experiencing major delays due to equipment issues on the track. bart has canceled all trips on its red line. crews have been working to fix the issue since this morning after a series of switches failed. in a tweet posted about 30 minutes ago, bart says it is experiencing delays to daly city. riders will divert at mcarthur station and head toward daly city. a pop icon shares a heartbreaking moment with her fans. britney spears suffers a tremendous loss in her plans to expand her family. what she says is next as she heals.

>> stargazers look to the moon tonight for a spectacular show. a total lunar eclipse will move into the earth shadow turning the moon red for 90 minutes. the eclipse started on the west coast around 6:30 this afternoon and is inspected to last through 11:50 this evening -- expected
