news and that breaking news is in redwood city where a motorcycle police officer has been hit by a car. it happened near 5th avenue and bay road. we have learned that the injured officer has been a member of the south san francisco police department for at least 15 years. she was redwood city as part of a step program that involved cooperation among neighboring police agencies. she is listed in stable condition, but apparently sustained major injuries. thankfully you'll be glad to know she is expected to make a full recovery, even though she's badly hurt. we will continue to follow this story and bring you any update just as soon as we get it in the meantime, good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm a dates our other top story is newly released data showing an increased wild. ir risk across the country the

risk associated wildfire in the burn probabilities are going to double over the next 30 years. double over the next 30 years the threat of wildfire especially here in the bay area will only get worse abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley explains new data this and where the increased fire risk is especially troubling. the first street foundation just released a first of its kind of analysis of the wildfire risk for individual properties nationwide creating hundreds of millions of simulations using data on local topography climate metrics and building footprints. we focused our met rics average the risk associated with wildfire in the burn probabilities are going to double 30 years as wildfires grow in terms of the area they cover and intensities of those wildfires and they're going to distribute more embers, which just opens up the reach of the

battling a brush fire just below the griffith observatory. this is in the los feliz neighborhood. you can see just how smoky the area is you chopper there in the foot in the picture as well. there aren't any visible flames from this vantage point which you know might be a good sign. the fire was first reported around 2:40 this afternoon now here in the bay area conditions are warming up and we're getting ready for a fire weather watch and some parts of bay area later this week so for more on the conditions of what we can expect. let's get to abc 7 news media religious sandia patel sandia. yeah, dan and alma we are talking about fire danger rising for solano county. let me show you the fire weather watch that begins at 11 am thursday. it is going to run until 8 pm friday. it's a north wind gusting to 35-45 miles an hour that's going to drop the humidity five to twelve percent and so any fires that develop are going to rapidly spread we're taking into account the winds and the humidity and how critically dry the fuels are take a look at the fire danger index. you will notice the northern

circumstances surrounding the case is still under investigation. but at this point the female that we have in custody wasn't a dating relationship with the victim. we are clear clarifying that she did suffer a non-life threatening grazing wound bullet wound. jessica garrison was booked into jail following the shooting early monday morning at a home on 10th street. police say she called 911 to say she and her boyfriend had been shot police are not giving specifics at this point about how garrison was shot. right now the oakland city council is getting ready to discuss a proposal to declare oakland a pro-choice sanctuary city. there was a rally earlier today on the steps of city hall to drum up support for the measure. we know that just because something is made illegal. that doesn't mean that there's less abortions that are being had. but we do know a statistics has shown in history has shown that abortions if illegal that would mean the more women will die.

the proposal is introduced by council president pro tem cheng tau if it passes the city would provide safe access to women who are seeking. have an abortion that includes transportation and even housing in the north bay a residential substance abuse treatment program that's been operating in sonoma county for more than 40 years is on the verge of closing. the decision is devastating to the more than 50 women and children who live at the homes and now may have nowhere to go abc 7 news anchor this course reports that the impending closure even took county officials by surprise. for more than 40 years, athena house a county has been a safe haven for women and their children facing addiction i feel safe on this property a beloved substance abuse treatment home where alumni like v live pamavita and brooke ross say they got their lives back you come in when somebody's just got into the program and they're lost empty, you know, just a whole and and you come back in a

couple of weeks and see the light in the spark and the hope but athena house which currently operates out of the stone house in santa rosa is on the brink of closure the nonprofit that runs the program california human development says that rising costs from inflation and challenges from the pandemic they can no longer afford to keep it going. they've decided to shut down the program and have told all the women and children to leave the home by the end of july. i was given a phone call and it was devastating everybody from the property. we had a process group and a lot of them cried many of the women who graduate from athena house come live here at this sober living facility hope village, but it's also scheduled to close the women. us it's unclear now where they're going to go. anywhere for these women to go. that's the truth sylvie vatanel de la cruz oversees, athena house and hope village. she says the closure's impact more than 50 women and children many of whom could soon be

homeless because of athena house. i have learned how to live free of drugs free of alcohol since the announcement dozens of former athena house alumni have shared videos pleading for the program to stay open. have started to go fund me and are hoping someone anyone with money and support will step into help officials with the county say they're also disappointed by the closure and hope to find a solution to keep it open whether that's funding from the federal government the state government county private. i don't think anybody cares where it comes from just as long as it's there and fast. in santa rosa liz kroitz abc 7 news students at a san francisco school walked out of classes today to protest florida's don't say gay bill about 400 students from james denman middle school marched around their excelsior district neighborhood to show support for lgbtq students some held up signs that said queer and proud. the organizers say bills that restrict teachers from discussing sexuality or gender

identity takes away a critical support system from children. it can be so dangerous for people to not have at a crucial time in their lives to not have this kind of support that we are so lucky to have the student organizers say bills that criminalize gender reassignment or discussion of gender identity will put children at risk of depression and self. aapi leaders and visionaries from across the country attended a reception today at the white house to mark aapi heritage month and abc 7. anchored dionne lim was among those invited to the white house. she's live at the nation's capital tonight deon. you got to meet the president. i did indeed and it was such a surreal moment dan admittedly. i even got a little emotional as i shook the president's hand and told him a little bit about the work i do for abc 7 telling stories of aapi hate and also operations in the aapi community. it was cool though, because at the end he even grabbed my phone

in mind before children in this age group get the booster. as covid cases increased throughout the country today the fda authorized a covid-19 booster for children 5 to 11 years old. this group would have to wait at least five months after. in vaccinated to get a booster. do you think necessary for this age? to get boosted i think necessary depends on whether or not you believe that there's a risk. there's definitely a risk for children dr. david cornfield chief of pediatric pulmonary medicine at lucile pack. children's hospital at stamford says the vaccines protection for children decreases after about five months. it's been seven months since i've seen for this age group was authorized dr. cornfield says a booster now is timely do you recommend for children in this age group to get boosted now, or should they wait for the next school year when they're actually going to be exposed to

an overpopulation in geese in foster city. it's about to get very loud in the next hour animal writes advocates will rally outside the city hall to protest a plan to kill the birds the number of geese in the city has gone from 180 in 2020 to 323 geese last year residents near the lagoon and beach areas say poop is everywhere. we cannot walk here and we cannot sit on grass is always dirty so they are always fighting with each other and always this road is dirty. and it's not just about cleanliness foster city says it is found bacteria from the feces polluting waterways.

thursday is when we're expecting the winds to start to switch direction and begin to increase our fire. major right now on shore winds gusting to 40 at sfo you will notice san mateo is 32 mile an hour winds. that's what prevented the coast from really warming up a whole lot. so there's always a place to go if you don't like the heat from our sutra tower camera you were looking at downtown san francisco sunny and even warmer tomorrow heightened fire concerns, thursday friday, and we do have a wide range of temperatures coming your way for the weekend. so let's talk about those winds still gusting near the coast and that's how it's going to remain tonight at 7 o'clock, 30 40 mile an hour winds tomorrow morning. the wind's ease except near the coast still breezy and then for the afternoon, they'll pick right back up again. you will notice 35-45 mile an hour winds, of course the inland is not going to be that windy, but as we go into thursday those wins increase some more. find that dry cold front and that is what's going to bring. as the north wind is what's going to bring us the higher fire danger for solano county 40s 50s on those temperatures

station family who died on monday walter lists had a decades-long career with abc stations. he worked his work was instrumental in modernizing our stations lists first role with the station group was in philadelphia his hometown as promotions manager for wpvi. he went on to become general manager at kfsn in fresno and wabc in, new york. while at wabc lists oversaw development of live with regis and kathy lee taking the show into national syndication in 1999. he became president of the own station group serving in that capacity for 10 years many of us here at this station new walter in that capacity. he had a passion for local tv. he focused on the importance of how we operated and conducted ourselves within our community. he was very committed to that walter believed that our commitment to community was our most important responsibility. walter list was 78 years old and a friend to us all we'll be
