second vaccine booster shot today. he got another dose of the moderna booster during a stop in current county encouraging others to get their booster to keep their immunity strong a second booster dose of the pfizer or moderna vaccine is available to all californians 50 and older as well as those who are immunocompromised or received the johnson and johnson vaccine. and as covid cases increased throughout the state. how close is california to implementing a new mask mandate. and what's the plan as the latest sub?
5:14 pm
grant continues to spread so quickly today abc 7 news reporter loose pena sat down with california's chief epidemiologist to ask those questions. fournia braces for the latest covid-19 wave was sat down with dr. erica pond. the state's achieve epidemiologist. she's hopeful but realistic this is a time where we are learning how to live with this virus this covid-19 virus according to cdc data the eye of the storm in california is in the bay area. francisco san mateo and marin are counties with the highest covid-19 case rates in the entire state. how did the bay area become california's latest covid hotspot. it's a question that we're all kind of thinking about and looking at quite a bit. i will say this particular virus continues to really throws curveballs and i think it really continues to find people who have not been infected and potentially, you know, we know that we have immunity from vaccines we can get immunity
5:15 pm
from prior infection and if you have both that actually gives you what we call hybrid immunity which is super strong. was it also because the bay area had a lack of natural immunity because so many people were vaccinated. yeah people have been able to avoid being infected and i think this virus again will often try to find people who aren't recently bart reinstated their mask mandate and san jose is requiring city employees to mask endorse again, so we asked is there a possibility that a date could be brought back. i think we should always maintain that readiness and possibility that especially if we see again a large impact on our healthcare system if we see an increase in deaths or really unusual severity that you know again, thankfully we maintain low hospitalizations to know but i think those are all the things that we're all concerned about dr. pond confirmed omic. some variant b8 to 12.1 makes up about half of the sequencing throughout the state meaning it's quickly overpowering other variants despite.
5:16 pm
this she is not highly concerned right now, but says anything change we could have a variant evolved that is more serious and that evades our immunity to an extent that we really have much larger impact on our infrastructure in san francisco loose peña abc 7 news new details the body discovered by a work crew in oakland. is that of a woman killed 18 years ago the corner identified the body as cynthia linda alonso. she disappeared on thanksgiving of 2004. this is video from shortly after she disappeared her body was found wrapped in in a shallow grave two weeks ago on the oakland army base in 2017 her boyfriend eric mora was sentenced to 11 years in prison for her murder oakland police have made an arrest now in a homicide from earlier this month officers found the body of 25 year old shafi kusimi near grisly peak off fish ranch road on may 8th. they're investigation determined cassimi. was shot at a camp in concord

fanduel and draftkings, two out of state corporations making big promises to californians. what's the real math behind their ballot measure for online sports betting? 90% of profits go to the out of state corporations permanently. only eight and a half cents is left for the homeless. and in virginia, arizona, and other states, fanduel and draftkings use loopholes to pay far less than was promised.
5:19 pm

5:20 pm
record-breaking high gas prices new record in san francisco at $6.28 a gallon for regular unleaded in the east. oakland gas is $6.15 in san jose average price of a gallon of gas is also $6 and 15 cents. all right. we need to check on our weather because today it did get hot and of course that's increasing concern about some fire danger. absolutely and dan and alma just like the gas prices rising today are concern is for solano county and they hills of the north and east bay for tomorrow as fire danger increases. so today up to 20 degrees. armor and novato compared to yesterday san carlos. you're up 16 degrees the winds along the coa again gusting to about 37 and half moon bay and that's preventing your temperatures from really rising much. so half moon bay in the 60s today. it is a gusty view from our mount tam cam as we look towards ocean beach 90 degrees right now in santa rosa. it's in the mid 80s napa petaluma.
5:21 pm
look at that fairfield 94 degrees it got up to 96 91 right now in livermore santa cruz camera showing you just a beautiful view. day to be out on the beach 68 in the city 7 oakland you're in the 80s from mountain view to san jose to santa clara now for the western conference finals as the warriors take on the mavs at the chase center 6pm is tip off. it's going to be really quite comfortable 60 degrees outside, but later on it will drop down to 60 degrees and breezy so definitely grab that extra layer if you're going suture tower camera showing you the sun shining over san francisco increasing fire danger next two days. it is going to be a little bit cooler during that time period and mild to warm weather for the weekend. so here's what's happening high pressure. bringing us the heat inland this area of low pressure is going to move east and as it does the pressure gradient between the two will increase and that's what's going to lead to our higher fire danger going into thursday and friday. it's not just for solano county. we have a red flag warning for central valley from thursday
5:22 pm
through friday. so let's go hour by hour. look at our fire danger hi to very high for the part of our viewing area also for the north and east bay hills. keep that in mind as that's where acting some of the stronger gusts hour by hour we go tonight along the coast. see as you go into tomorrow morning. although it's a little breezy along the coast. i want you to keep an eye on this. area here tomorrow afternoon evening, 27 to 30 mile an hour winds that gusty wind pattern out of the north. what's bringing us the fire danger for solano county 50s and 60s tomorrow morning if we see a patch or two of fog? it's going to be very it to the coast tomorrow afternoon in the south bay temperatures coming down 79 in san jose 85 in gilroy on the peninsula 75 palo alto 61 in half moon bay downtown san francisco 68 degrees north bay. 78 in san rafael mid 80s, napa santa rosa in the east bay 76 oakland 75 fremont had inland and just a couple of low 90s from fairfield to brentwood accuweather 7-day forecast
5:23 pm
increasing fire danger. it's still remains elevated into friday, but those temperatures are trending lower. weekend they bounce back and then next week. we'll bring in low to mid 90s in lind again 60s coast side. i'm again, right? thank you, sandy. well warmer temperatures across the bay area always mean a greater risk of fire firefighters and conquered say they feel conf. it because they have prepared for a potentially busy fire season. into acosta county firefighters are sending this our spending rather this week setting small fires. and putting them out in rodeo, which provides two benefits to the residents eliminate some of that fuels that is right along interstate 80 and backs up to the houses. the other thing it does it allows us to practice firing operations with our new firefighters. the department has also added to its fleet. they have two new type-six engines giving them four now that can help them get through difficult. terrain. stay with us. us. we'll be right back.
