looking at the 24 hour temperature change, running five to 10 degrees warmer in most spots compared to this time yesterday. as you step out the door, it is 63 currently in the city, 60 in oakland, 65 in san jose but still 77 in antioch with a lot of warm weather hanging on this morning and this'll be the launching pad to get us to a warm hot day this afternoon. already starting to see the sunrise, beautiful this morning with clear conditions. a lot of sunshine today, already into the 80's and 90's by lunchtime. the coast stays cool in the 60's but later today, it is another hot one for most of us with temperatures in the 80's and 90's once again, but much cooler weather returns tomorrow and we will have those details coming up in a few minutes. reggie: now to the developments of the horrific attack on an elementary school in texas. at least 21 people are dead, 19 children and two teachers. three victims have been

identified. both of the children were only 10 years old. jobina is tracking the latest. jobina: this morning, many american parents are grappling with the fact that their kids may not be safe at school. police say it started when the 18-year-old gunman shot his grandmother. she is in critical condition. the shooter left his home and crashed his truck in a ditch outside of the school, then dressed in body armor and armed himself with an ar-15 style rifle and started shooting as he walked onto campus. students reportedly started scrambling to get out of windows, to escape from the school. officers arrived and exchanged gunfire with the shooter while some parents rushed to the scene to find their kids. >> when parents drop their kids off at school, they have every expectation to know that they will be able to pick their child up when that school daythere arn

morning right now -- in mourning right now and the state of texas is morning with them. kumasi: police shot and killed the -- jobina: police shot and killed the gunman. school has been canceled for the rest of the year. the graduation ceremony will be addressed at a later time. kumasi: in the bay area, some students will see precautionary patrols on campus in reaction to the shooting in texas. amy hollyfield joins us live with the latest on that, and the reaction we are seeing from state and local leaders. amy: uvalde, more than 1000 miles away from here but schools are still reacting with caution. contra costa county says they will increase their sheriff's deputies patrols around schools. san francisco and mountain view school said they will see the same thing around their

buildings with police officers just being there, having a presence, increasing patrols. no one has heard of any local threats at all. they are doing this as a precaution. we've also heard from local politicians. eric swalwell is the first we will bring you. this congressman had a powerful message. he said i wish i could look at my three small kids and promise i will always protect them. that would be ally. america arms the most dangerous people to the teeth, leaving every child vulnerable to being shot in their class. california governor gavin newsom was a little more direct. he said this is preventable. our inaction is a choice. we also heard from senator dianne feinstein. she released a lengthy statement that starts with this quote. i am just speechless at the people that is running rampant -- at the evil that is running rampant. after every shooting, i ask how

many deaths is too many? a lot of parents asking that as well. it will be an emotional day, sending kids back to school after this horrific attack. reggie: thank you. one of the more impassioned responses came from the warriors head coach, steve kerr. there was a moment of silence before tipoff last night in dallas. he spoke to the media before game time and was in no mood to talk about basketball. of course if you know anything about him, you know this is personal. his dad was assassinated in beirut in 1984. >> in the last 10 days, we've had elderly black people killed in a supermarket in buffalo. we've had asian churchgoers killed in southern california. now we have children murdered at school. when are we going to do something?! i'm tired, i'm so tired of

getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families. i'm so tired of the excuses. i'm so tired of the moments of silence. enough. reggie: he ended his address by walking off the podium. after the game, steph curry shared his sentiment. >> i've got kids. i send them to school every day, and you feel for the parents who are going through it. i can't even imagine. for coach to come out and say what he said and every word he said was powerful and meaning all -- meaningful. i accept the challenge of trying to figure out a way, to use my voice to hopefully make change. reggie: he said it was hard to stay focused on playing basketball last night. kumasi: the question this

morning, wind is enough enough? it has been 10 years since the sandy hook school shooting. a decade of failed proposals and laws to prevent tragedies like this from happening again, and yet there has been little concrete action. it appears we will see the same thing again. ike: good morning. all eyes are on capitol hill today as lawmakers are pressed yet again on how to address gun violence in the wake of another deadly shooting. overnight, a line of hearses waiting to carry off the victims at robb elementary school. lawmakers in washington confronted the ugly truth. >> we are seeing way too many of these. >> we have another sandy hook on our hands. what are we doing? >> i would normally say in a moment like this, we would say that our hearts break. but our hearts keep getting broken. ike: the violence in uvalde

coming less than two weeks after 10 people were killed in buffalo. the fbi reporting 212 mass shootings in the u.s. in the first 144 days of the year. uvalde marks the deadliest school shooting in nearly 10 years, reminding the nation of the sandy hook tragedy, and a call to action that came a ca we will have to come together and take meaningful action, to prevent more tragedies like this. ike: since sandy hook, congress has tried and failed to pass gun control legislation. the house recently managed to pass bills that would expand the review period for gun buyers and require background checks for sales at gun shows, but those efforts are respected to be blocked by the senate. >> our kids are living in fear, every single time they set foot in the classroom because they think they are next. what are we doing? why do you spend all this time running for the united states senate? why do you go through all the

hassle of getting this job or putting yourself in a position of authority if your answer is as this slaughter increases in kids run for their lives, we do nothing? ike: many republicans say restricting weapons is not the answer. >> that doesn't work, it's not effective, it doesn't prevent crime. we know what prevents crime, going after felons and fugitives and those with serious mental illness, arresting them, prosecuting them when they try to illegally buy firearms. ike: with the issue of gun control front and center, many people believe the path forward can be found in red flag laws. those laws open the door for officials to identify anyone potentially dangerous and either confiscate their weapons or banned them from buying new ones -- ban them from buying new ones. kumasi: stay with abc7news for

reggie: president biden demanding lawmakers take action to prevent the next mass shooting. becomes after a gunman opened fire inside that texas elementary school, killing nearly two dozen people. we are joined now live from uvalde. >> good morning. the sun is up. it is a new day and questions remain. so many families are still waiting for answers on their missing children. 21 people died. that massacre right here at the elementary school. 19 were children, innocent

children just days away from school ending. families gathered overnight at the uvalde, texas civic center, waiting and hoping to hear that their children are safe. dna being used to identify those who did not survive the elementary school mass shooting. >> how long were you waiting? >> i'm going to wait all i can. i'm concerned. >> hours after morning drop off at rob elementary, the alerts begin, advising of an active shooter on campus. >> we just hear all kinds of gunshots going off, like nonstop, constantly. the world was scared. >> close to 11:30 a.m. local time, the shooting suspect, 18-year-old salvador ramos, made his way inside the school wearing body armor and carrying at least one ar-15 style rifle. texas governor greg abbott says

it appears responding officers later shot and killed ramos. as local and federal law enforcement look deeper into the investigation and ramos, families are coming forward about their lost loved ones. the family of 10-year-old javier lopez says his mother was with him at a school award ceremony hours before the shooting. across the country, president biden has ordered american flags at half staff in honor of the victims. from the white house, he and first lady jill biden joined the uvalde families in mourning while calling for common sense gun laws. >> it is time to turn this pain into action, for every parent, for every citizen of this country. we have to make it clear to every elected official, it is time to act. >> families overnight or asked for dna samples in hopes of identifying the rest of the victims.

the sun rises on the eastern horizon. calls for hot temperatures inland and it is very warm. high fire danger with that red flag warning in effect for solano county. later this afternoon, that fog is going to search up from the coast and that will help usher in cooler temperatures and then tomorrow, temperatures are going to tumble. inland we could see a 15 to 20 degrees temperature drop in our daytime highs today to tomorrow. as we take a look at temperatures right now, we are on the mild side and you will feel that warm air. 65 currently in san jose, 57 in santa rosa. later this afternoon, they are pretty breezy but they are onshore. wind gusting up to 20 miles per hour and we will have hot temperatures today and tomorrow.

kumasi: here are seven things to know this morning. we are learning more about the 21 victims at a mass shooting at a texas elementary school. a fourth grade teacher and two children have been identified. reggie: at these 19 children and two teachers were killed in that shooting. police shot and killed the 18-year-old gunman. classes have been canceled for the rest of the school year. kumasi: in the bay area, contra costa county is increasing patrols around schools as a precaution. the sheriffs office says they have not heard of any threats. san francisco mountain view police are doing increase patrols as well. reggie: the city of oakley has announced the alexis gave award fund has increased $100,000.

this is a look at the uvalde, area -- uvalde, texas area. just hours after drop off, parents started getting alerts of an active shooter on campus. at least 19 students and two teachers were killed. police say the suspect went into the school wearing body armor, carrying an ar-15 rifle and texas governor greg abbott says it appears responding officers later shot and killed him. president biden spoke about his outrage to the shooting and is calling for common sense gun laws. >> these kinds of mass shootings never happen with the kind of frequency that happened in america. why? why are we willing to live with this carnage? why do we keep letting this happen? where in god's name is our backbone? to have the courage to deal with this in stand up to the lobbies? kumasi: investigators say the

suspect reportedly sent videos and photos of guns to other users on multiple platforms before the shooting. reggie: this morning we are learning more about the victims who died in the shooting. jobina has more. jobina: fourth grade teacher -- is one of the victims identified in the shooting. her family says she worked in the district for 17 years. the school website says she was a mother and wife who loved running and hiking. 10-year-old javier lopez was also identified as one of the 19 children killed. he was in the fourth grade and his cousins said hours before the shooting, his mother had attended his award ceremony at school, not knowing it will be the last time she saw her son. the family of another 10-year-old says she died as well. she just turned 10 two weeks ago. flags at the white house are flying at half staff in honor of the victims killed in the shooting. law enforcement sources tell us

a number of victims are children of border patrol agent's. several others were injured and treated -- and being treated at the hospital. kumasi: vice president kamala harris is demanding lawmakers take action on gun control to prevent shootings like this from happening again. >> enough is enough. as a nation, we have to have the courage to take action and understand the nexus between what makes for reasonable and sensible public policy, to ensure something like this never happens again. kumasi: the vice president spoke last night at a gala in washington, d.c. but her calls for action are not -- are not likely to make a difference. gun-control legislation is not likely to find the votes in the senate. reggie: of course the vice

president is joined by many of our bay area leaders calling for something to be done in congress. locally, some school district get extra protection -- extra attention from police officers. amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek. amy: you may see extra police officers patrolling your school. here and contra costa county, the sheriff says he will have extra patrols at schools, san francisco and mountain view also say they plan to increase police visibility and all school districts saying there is no known threat, no known local connection to what happened in uvalde. we also have reaction from local politicians. u.s. congressman eric swalwell put out a tweet saying, i wish i could look at my three small kids and promise i will always protect them. that would be ally. america arms the most dangerous people to the teeth, leaving every child vulnerable to being shot in their classroom.

california's seven-day positivity rate is up to 6.6%, up from 5% last week. the cdc says covid patients who have experienced recurrence of symptoms should isolate again for five days and another cdc study says people who have covid have a one in five chance of experiencing at least one long symptom. the odds are even greater for people over the age of 65. health officials believe we have our first case of monkeypox in california. few details are being revealed, other than the person is in the sacramento area and recently returned from europe. now county health officials are awaiting the results from the cdc. we know the person is at home in isolation. more than 200 monkeypox cases have been reported worldwide and while it is contagious, experts say the symptoms tend to be bile. reggie: a special ceremony at mount diablo high school in concord honor to students who

reggie: hyundai is recalling nearly 200,000 were cars because of part of the seatbelt can explode. the affected vehicles affect 2019 through 2022 accents. the issue with a part known as the seatbelt pretensioner, which tightens the seatbelt during a crash. if it malfunctions, it could send small metal pieces flying. kumasi: walmart is expanding their drone delivery program, hoping to reach 4 million homes soon. they are planning to offer deliveries in six states by the end of the year.
