take the jacket with you out the door. temperatures will be warm this morning. you can see the marine layer and here how the day shapes up. slow to warm this morning and this afternoon we go into the 60's and 70's. we will talk about the holiday weekend coming up in a few minutes. julian: more this morning on the massacre in uvalde texas, families torn apart without much expedition as to why. it is sending another shock wave through this country. kumasi: we saw so many tears and bears in texas as hundreds attended the vigil at robb elementary. ♪ 19 children and two teachers were killed in tuesday's massacre in uvalde. 17 others were injured. 13 of the victims have been identified. the teachers worked in the same classroom and had been educators

more than a decade. grieving families have sharing about their children. among the victims were soft all players, girls kept, two pairs of cousins, and honor roll students. julian: investigators still have a long road ahead trying to piece together what happened. we are learning more about the messages from t be tt shooting. from our sister station in houston, daniela is joining us with more on the shooting. reporter: we are learning little bit more on what officials believe happened days before the shooting and what happened inside that building. i want to focus on the victims. there are 21 crosses out here with the names of the victims. some one drop them off overnight. we have seen people and we saw a mother with two young children from out of town who came and dropped off flowers, stayed in

the moment because this has impacted so many people across our community and beyond. this small town of uvalde, texas, coming to bather -- coming together to pray for the victims and families after the shooting at robb elementary school. 18-year-old salvador ramos, armed with an ar-15 weapon, stormed into a classroom, barriced fir ldren losing eilisssroom along h two teachers. for responding officers, this was personal. many had their own children in harm's way. reporter: officials say officers shot and killed the suspect 40 minutes to one hour after his first encounter with the school resource officer at the building's entrance. the suspect turned 1890's ago. the atf saying one day after his

birth day he bought an ar-15 style rifle. a few days later he bought a second one and at four days later he was at robb elementary school. ramos's grandfather saying he did not know his grandson had weapon. >> if i had known, i would have reported him. daniela: also, a chilling warning and it's before the shooting. they gunman suspecting a 15-year-old girl describing an argument with his grandmother. he writes "i am going to go shoot up an elementary school." this school superintendent ending the school year early. >> my heart was broken today for our small community. we will need your prayers to get us through this. daniela: something we did learn

from representatives with the customs and border protection office is that four border patrol agent's were out here from a special team that were able to help stop the shooter with the help of local entities -- local and state officials. kumasi: the father of one of the students killed, 10-year-old amarie joe garza learned the details of what happened from other students. >> we got confirmation from other students in the classroom that she was just trying to call authorities. i guess he just shot her. how do you look at this girl and shooter -- and shoot her? she was the sweetest little girl who did nothing wrong. she listened to her mom and dad. she always brushed her teeth.

she was creative. she made things for us. she never got trouble in school. i just want to know what she did to be a victim. kumasi: we know there is so much pain there. emotions are running high. beto o'rourke interrupted a press conference from governor greg abbott about the uvalde shooting. julian: beto o'rourke shouted at the current governor. he said the response from governor abbott and other leaders was totally predictable. he also predicted these attacks will continue to happen until lawmakers do something about it. >> the only thing he did was make is you to buy a gun. yeley think he did was make it easier to carry a gun and public and he bragged about the fact there would be no background check, no training, no vetting whatsoever. julian: several other little officials on the stage including

texas -- including ted cruz told beto o'rourke to sit down and he was pathetic. governor abbott ordered law-enforcement to escort him out of the building. the governor said the only aspect driving mass shootings is the status of mental health in our country. kumasi: today marks one year since the mass shooting at the vta railyard. these are the nine men killed by a coworker with a gun. it is a somber day with tributes planned in their honor. amy joins us live in san jose. amy: vta employees starting to arrive for a ceremony they will hold at 6:30 to remember their coworkers who were killed one year ago today. nine people were shot and killed by an angry coworker as they gather for a union meeting in the railyard on may 26, 2021.

the killer then shot and killed himself. vta trends -- trains did not run for three months after due to damaged equipment and grieving employees. >> we knew this would be a very tough day for all of our employees, their families, lots of rents, people who used to see our lost employees every day. we have somebody who said everyday that so-and-so used to come in every morning before his shift for coffee, and now he does not come in anymore. our whole community is still very severe. amy: the san jose city council proclaimed a day of remembrance for the victims at its meeting tuesday. city hall will be lit up in the covers -- in the colors of the vta. officials hope everyone

and overwhelming to countless families and hitting close to home here today in the bay area. kumasi: we have live team coverage, finding answers in the middle of this crisis. a texas investigation and possible gun solutions, but we start with amy hollyfield live in san jose with another somber reflection happening today. amy: good morning. today is the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting that happened in the vga railyard in san jose. i want to show you a life picture of what they are doing -- a live picture of what they are doing to commemorate this anniversary. a ceremony is scheduled to start now at 6:30. this is when the shooting started one year ago. workers told employees they wanted to have a gathering at commemorate this on this very saturday. -- on this very sad day. nine train operators called in

sick today for a mental health day. nine trains that usually operate will not be in service today. they are asking riders the patient with the light rail service as they mark this very sad anniversary. nine of their coworkers were shot and killed in the downtown san jose railyard one year ago today and killed by a fellow employee who shot and killed himself. this anniversary comes two days after the mass shooting in uvalde which officials say adds to the emotions of these workers. >> there have been so many mass shootings, 62 over the last year. we don't hear about them all. they don't all get the huge public city -- huge publicity. it is a horrifying thing it is continuing to happen. people are affected in different

shooting in uvalde, texas. a community and country grasping with answers. kumasi: 21 victims have been identified so far, including teachers who worked as educators more than 10 years. julian: the front-page headline of usa today saying there are no words. the dallas morning news saying "they were left." the hartford current saying open ever again -- "never again." jobina is live with what we are remembering of these victims. jobina: families are devastated as they grapple with the news of this shooting. here is a live look at uvalde right now where there is a growing memorial for the m's. we are learning more about those 21 lives lost. jace and jayla were cousins. the family lost their grandfather earlier this month.

"they were loving baby angels, always had a smile on their faces. i cannot believe this happened to our in joel's." students say actions within the classroom. one classmate tried to call 911 as shots rang out before the gunmen's fire turned to her. >> she was the best person i know. full of life, gone too soon, always smiling. she was her own self. jobina: one of the two teachers who died, irma garcia was a teacher 22 years. eva was a teacher for more than two decades -- more than a decade. only one of the 17 injured remains in serious condition this morning. julian: friends of the accused gunman said he had a history of fighting with others. former classmates say he was

quiet and severely believed. he was a big user of a social app for gen z and would strip himself abusing animals according to several users. three days before the shooting, he sent pictures and videos of guns on social media. the shooter's grandfather spoke to abc news. >> i did not know he had weapons or nothing. if i had known, i would have reported him. >> you would have reported your own grandson? >> yes, i am against all of that. julian: he had no criminal history and no diagnosed mental health issues. kumasi:'s sentiments have gone from condolences to calls for real change and gun control to prevent these tragedies from happening again. ryan is in the newsroom following the wave of --. >> there is a cry for strong gun

measures after not just issued in texas, all recently. it will get tough to get parties to agree on reform. senator feinstein is asking colleagues to consider legislation that would raise the aged just weapons with high ammunition to 21. she pointed out that neither sugars could buy a handgun but they could buy an assault weapon. democrats support her move but republicans are hesitant to make change. >> one nation under guns. it is not have to be that way. our parents don't need to drop their kids off at school and wonder if their kid will be next. >> people want to take people's second amendment rights away and i'm not willing to do that. ryan: governor newsom is announcing new action on guns in california. he will sign more than a dozen dressing gun violence by the end of next month. one law would allow private

citizens to sue firearm effectors and distributors. that is modeled after the texas abortion law. >> we know they work i will repeat what i said earlier, those states with the most progressive gun safety laws have seen a disproportionate impact in terms of gun related deaths and murders as a consequence of those policies. ryan: that bill is headed toward the assembly. the governor referenced minutes of dollars spent towards gun violence prevention in california. he also called out multiple churches by name saying the judicial system has also failed to protect californians. ryan curry, abc7news. julian: today, a student walk out protesting gun violence in schools. a nonprofit is making that call on instagram to students across the country. in the bay area, we saw people gathered yesterday to remember

the children and teachers whose lives were cut short. dozens gathered at bryant park in foster city to remember those who lost their lives. many of them are still in shock, worrying about their own families and young children. >> we think they should be safe. it is until these things happen that that comes home. the world is not as safe as we thought it could be. >> we are here to honor those of the m's and grieve and event and then get to action -- and vent and then get to action. julian: organizers called for tougher gun control measures, calling on lawmakers to close loopholes on background checks. kumasi: student is accused of threatening gun violence against an employee. investigators say he threatened violence at another school that is not being named. the teen was arrested and taken to juvenile hall.

investigators recovered several pieces of evidence but firearm was located. julian: police and school districts are taking extra security precautions today. nevada police told residents to expect an increased presence near schools. there is no threat, but it is the research -- it is the reassurance. >> this is for peace of mind for the students, staff, and parents at our community to know we are in partnership. when some thing's going wrong somewhere else, we will take precautions we need to take to provide safety for everyone. >> we spoke with parents -- julian: we spoke with parents in walnut creek who said they talked to their kids about the gun violence. a student posted a video of himself shooting a gun earlier this week. police stood watch today and if the student was not allowed back on campus. these are tough times weighing on parents, kids, and everyone.

julian: the texas school shooting has much of the country talking about gun violence this morning. last week, two men died and two others were hurt in a shooting

incident along interstate 580 in oakland. we talked to the brother of one of the victims. he was just 21 years old when he was shot and killed. carlos hernandez has only been told to bits and pieces of what might have happened from his brother's friends. they told him they were relaxing and at their vehicle when someone today gun at them. juan carlos says his brother was not a gang member and not into drugs. >> he was working hard. i'm supposed to be the older brother and sometimes i feel like he was the bigger role model. when i think about the culprit, i feel a lot of anger and hatred. i tell myself i need to keep myself composed. but the police do their job, they will find this person. julian: chp is investigating the murder case but have not made any arrests. kumasi: new census data shows a

population of san francisco has dropped to its lowest level in more than a decade. the city lost 6.3% of its population between july 2020 and july 2021. there are now 815,000 san francisco residents, the lowest since 2010. other bay area cities that some opposition losses include daly city, san mateo, and cupertino. high housing costs and remote work all the seas are the reason people are leaving. there is a new unit to support the aap i in san francisco. the district attorney's office launched this to expand services and learning access for a api crime -- for aapi crimes. the attorney general says he will continue to advocate for greater access for all victims and trauma recovery clinicians
