there's no no excuse for that. and without we say good afternoon and thanks for joining us. i'm larry beale and i'm kristen zee new questions about the shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers in uvalde, texas today authorities reveal new details about the timeline of the initial police response abc news reporter morgan norwood. has that timeline. this afternoon texas department of safety officials admitting that officers who first responded to rob elementary should have acted sooner to take down the and authorities say the incident commander believed he was no longer dealing with an active shooter, but a barricaded subject and that the children were no longer at risk. hey from the benefit of where i'm sitting now. the course it was not the right decision. it was the wrong decision period authorities now saying that it appears that the gunman got into the school from a door that was propped open by a teacher and was never confronted by a school resource officer before entering the building. that officer was not on scene not on campus, but had heard the

911. with a man with a gun drove immediately to the area so he drove right by the suspect who was hunkered down behind a vehicle where he began shooting at the school at 11:44 14 minutes after the first 9-1-1 call was made 19 officers from various agencies made it outside the classroom door where the suspect was barricaded, but they did not go in instead. they waited for tactical team which arrived about 30 minutes later during today's press conference authorities talking about those 911 calls that came in inside that classroom you can hear well, the 911 call fit three shots were fired 35 minutes after cpd swann arrived officers breaking through the door and killing the suspect just two months before this tragedy. you've all day school district had trained for an incident like this holding an active shooter response drill families neighbors the evolved a community struggling to understand. i'm angry. i mean this guy needs to resign and questions still surrounding those 911 calls from children inside that class.

happened last thursday. this is video from the scene that night officers were responding to a witness report who set a fight was happening underneath the freeway overpass at owens and mariposa streets the department released this body camera video moments ago officers can be seen engaging with two men lying on the ground and fighting each with knives police say they then gave the men multiple orders to stop and fire non-lethal. dials before shooting their guns. here's what sfpd says happened next. within seconds, mr. mckinnon again brought the knife point up and then downward towards mr. mendoza in a stabbing motion at least two times well officers continued to give commands to drop the knife. at this time in officer involved shooting occurred involving four officers. mckinnon died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds mendoza died at the hospital from a

better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. may happens to be mental health awareness month and this week abc 7 is focusing on your mental health and joining me right now is psychologist nia saunders, dr. saunders first. thanks so much for your time. this the past couple of weeks boy. just grueling the shootings in buffalo. we had texas. how do you deal with trauma therapy, especially when you're talking about trying to work with little kids teenagers about these incidents. yeah, definitely this a couple of weeks have been so incredibly painful for so many communities, you know and when working and doing trauma therapy with

children and teens and adults it's important to normalize that it's okay not to feel okay, you know it really helped to to have permission to be able to feel whatever you feel and to have a space where you can talk about those days without without feeling any stigma around it. what? to get past some of these images that are in their heads and just kind of going around and around. yeah, sometimes it's draw a picture draw a picture of what you saw or maybe you're drawing a picture of what nightmares you were having or the dreams and let's try to adjust it. well, how can we how can we make this picture feel a little bit better? how can we introduce a superhero character? how can we change the ending? so to speak to give the child some some ownership over the story and that experience and how it landed with them? interesting, so reframing it so they're they're in control as

opposed to what they witnessed now specifically in in the buffalo case that was obviously racially motivated. how do you make people feel safe when they look at that and worry. is that going to be me? yeah, you know, it's i i don't think it's within any one person's power to make someone else feel differently. so i think part of it is validating that it's okay not to feel safe and helping clients helping people identify where the spaces are that they do feel safe and oftentimes, especially for communities of color and in particular the black community is relying on relying on your community. so reaching out to those folks who have similar shared experiences so that you don't feel that sense of isolation and and loneliness and dealing with this it really helps to normalize that by relying on community support on the personal side you listen to these stories for hours and

hours and hours. how do you protect your own mental health? because that's fairly traumatic as well. just having to absorb everything that people, you know are telling you yeah, definitely. that's you know an occupational hazard when it comes to therapists and i have a therapist of my own and i'm very open with about with my clients and i have wonderful colleagues and friends and support. my family and friends that i can rely on and i also really practice or try to practice as much as possible having really fun boundaries around work-life balance. you know, it is a practice. it's not something i can say i perfected but definitely having having boundaries around what is work and what is my personal time and doing things outside, you know being out in nature and getting to move around helps to metabolize all the stress and trauma. i've been exposed to just by virtue of my job. yeah sure. it makes perfect sense dr. saunders. thank you so much for your time

obi-wan kenobi debuts on disney plus reporter george panaccio from our sister station in los angeles has our preview. i've always thought there could be a cool story between revenge of the sith and a new hope and that's exactly what we found and developed and i i think people will feel the same way, you know obi one kenobi you and mcgregor returns to the role. he played in the three star wars prequels his character helped train anakin skywalker who then turned to the dark side as darth vader now obi-wan has his jedi eyes on anakin's son luke skywalker when the time he must be trained like you trained his father. mcgregor says since his star wars trilogy played out. he's felt more love for the film. from the kids who love them and so over the years they've grown up and i'm more and more i hear from people that the prequels are like their star wars films, you know and their relationship to my star wars films is like the relationship i had.
