announcer: building a better bay area. moving forward. finding solutions. this is abc7news. >> an elementary school has become a battleground for parents determined to keep it open. thank you for joining us. we begin with an impassioned fight to keep it open. parents are fighting, escalated -- escalating efforts to save the school. our reporter explains they want to run it. >> education is unequal and unjust. reporter: the school first opened in the 1920's but had their final graduation last week and some parents never went home. >> a group of mothers and community members and children decided to stay and occupy the school. reporter: one parent says the

sit in protest involves pitching tents outside the school and others are occupying classrooms inside months after officials decided to close the school and others because of declining enrollment as an effort to reduce the budget deficit. activists say it is not what this underserved community needs. >> they want to take away from kids who need this. reporter: the group says a new reopening and a new name and classes will start tuesday. >> we are offering chess class, stem, math, esl. reporter: but the sitting is being called trespassing. >> we are not leaving. reporter: ousd says they recognize some people are a

visiting with families of victims, survivors, and first responders of tuesday's deadly shooting. 19 third grade and fourth grade students and two teachers were killed when an 18-year-old gunman used in assault rifle to open fire on two classrooms, firing over 300 rounds. the gunman was inside the classroom for 77 minutes before officers breached the locked door with a key and killed the shooter. >> i do not know what we have to do to ensure that our babies are safe. what do we have to do? reporter: students nationwide are staging walkouts, demonstrating against school violence and the lack of action on gun reform. 300 miles away, nra held their convention in houston. >> it is in our god-given rights to protect ourselves. reporter: senator chris murphy says bipartisan motions on new

opened fire april 3. he and his brothers were each charged with three counts of murder. they are accused of taking part in a gun battle that killed six and her 12 outside a -- and hurt 12 outside a nightclub. in napa county, nancy pelosi's husband has been arrested for driving under the influence. a reporter is in the newsroom with what we know. reporter: paul pelosi was arrested last night, according to the napa county booking report and his bail was set at $5,000. records indicate he was released this morning. he is charged with dui and driving of a blood -- driving with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit of .08%. napa county sheriff's office has not released any other details. we do not know where it happened

or where paul pelosi was coming from or going. he has been married to nancy pelosi since 1963 and they share five children. nancy pelosi's office put out a brief statement saying the speaker will not be commenting on this private matter that occurred while she was on the east coast. she was in rhode island, to speak at brown university's commencement earlier today. reaction is coming in from across the country and on both sides of the political aisle. we will talk more about that tonight. dion: the pope passed over a prominent arch quik-trip of san francisco -- archbishop of san francisco when he named new cardinals today. early this month, cardinality said he would no longer allow nancy pelosi to receive communion because of her support of abortion rights.

out-of-state corporations wrote an online sports betting plan they call "solutions for the homeless". really? the corporations take 90 percent of the profits. and using loopholes they wrote, they'd take even more. the corporations' own promotional costs, like free bets, taken from the homeless funds. and they'd get a refund on their $100 million license fee, taken from homeless funds, too. these guys didn't write a plan for the homeless. they wrote it for themselves.

dion: the carnival parade returned to mission district today, filling the streets with music and dancing. organizers say they had more participants than they originally expected, and a big crowd came out to take it all in. a contingent lineup of 60 featured 3000 artists representing the cultural heritage of brazil, mexico, cuba, colombia, and el salvador as well as others. the parade made its way down 20 blocks of san francisco's historic latino district. pride is taking shape in san francisco. pink triangles are going up. volunteers spent the day hanging up pink streamers.

dion: at sfo, a bumpy ride for many traveling by air this weekend. more than 1200 flights have been canceled today, according to flightaware. in total, at least 3500 flights

have been canceled since friday. delta airlines has canceled the most among major u.s. airlines. they blamed yesterday's cancellations on bad weather and air traffic control actions. there is a chance a celestial first is expected in the sky tomorrow night. astronomers say there could be as many as 1000 shooting stars lighting up the sky, or it could be a complete dud. it could be extra special. the parent comet has been disintegrating and that could result in otherworldly light shows. our best chance to see the meteor shower in the bay area will be at 10:00 p.m. tomorrow but i am not encouraged, if there is a chance it might be a dud. spencer: that's true. but at least the skies will be clear. it sounds like a hedging weather forecast. it will either rain, or it

dion: san francisco police cracked the case of an irate mother doc. this morning, an officer spotted a mother doc -- duck quacking at a storm drain. the cause, her ducklings had fallen through a metal grate and were trapped.

police posted photos of fuzzy baby ducklings that were reunited with their mother. that is it tonight, breaking news as we come on the air. the justice department now says it will conduct a critical review of the police response to the massacre in uvalde, texas after word that officers waited outside classrooms as the attack continued for 77 excruciating minutes. president biden confronted with a community's growing frustration in uvalde. begging him to do something. how the president responded. and tonight abc news obtains new video from that day that shows police breaking windows to rescue children. and new dispatch audio reveals authorities on the phone with students trapped in their classrooms. we're also learning new details tonight about the police response. sources tell abc news how federal officers took action, deciding on their own to finally storm the classroom and take out the gunman.
