schools the district plans to close. parents are fighting back, escalating efforts to save the school. cornell barnard explains, they want to run it. >> education is unequal and it is unfair and unjust. >> parker elementary first opened in the 1920's that had its final graduation last wednesday. some parents never went home. >> me and a group of mothers and children and community members decided to not leave, decided to stay and occupy the school. >> this parent says the protest involved pitching tents outside the school. others are occupying classrooms. officials decided to close this school and several others due to declining enrollment as an effort to reduce the deficit. activists say it is that with the community needs. >> the school has good teachers. kids need this. >> the groups says the

liberation of the school means a reopening and a new name. they say classes taught by community members start tuesday. >> we are offering chess class, a stem science class, mathematics, esl. >> the sit in is considered trespassing by the district. >> they tried to chain the back pen -- fences and lock us out of the cafeteria. we are still here and we are not leaving. >> the district says it recognizes some people are upset about the closure. "we would ask they choose a different means of protest, one that doesn't disrupt staff and the need to close out the year." parents say the tents are not going anywhere until their message is heard. >> we plan to be here until the district reopens parker or keeps it as a community center. >> the education standoff continues. cornell barnard, abc 7 news.

>> president biden and the first lady faced an uproar as they visited a texas town shattered by a school shooting. after the crowd shouted "do something," the president said, we will. abc news has a look at how the first couple paid tribute to the victims. president biden and the first lady paid their respects at robb elementary in uvalde. they attended mass before visiting with families of victims, survivors and first responders of tuesday's deadly shooting. 19 third and fourth grade students and two teachers were killed when an 18-year-old gunman used an assault rifle to open fire on two classrooms, firing over 300 rounds according to authorities. the gunmen, inside the classroom for 77 minutes before officers

breached the door with the key and killed the shooter. >> i don't know what we have to do to ensure that our babies are safe. what do we have to do? >> students nationwide are staging walkouts, demonstrating against school violence and the lack of action on gun reform. 300 miles from uvalde, the nra held a convention in houston. >> it is our right to protect ourselves. >> senator chris murphy said bipartisan negotiations on gun laws are underway on capitol hill. >> it is inconceivable that we haven't passed federal legislation trying to address the tragedy of gun violence. the pace of everyday gun violence has dramatically escalated over the past two years. >> the 18-year-old suspect purchased his gun legally. a republican congressman said raising the age urges a gun to 21 is a no-brainer. >> when you look at buffalo, you

look at this shooting, these are people under age 21. we know the human brain develops and matures a lot between 18 and 21. >> the department of justice says it will conduct a critical incident review of the law enforcement response to the shooting. >> a church in alameda set up a memorial for the victims of the uvalde shooting. 21 chairs line the outside of the twin towers united that the discharge. -- methodist church. each chair has the name of the vic m. -- of a victim. one church member says the chair tribute was organized by the pastor and youth members of the congregation, and they hope it sends a message. >> it is like, let's do something so we don't have to do this again. we could go on and on and keep adding more and more because of more shootings and we don't need to do that. >> the public is invited to

visit the memorial and sign a book with condolences for the victims' families. steve kerr spoke out a bounce -- about gun violence. he talked again today about taking action and spoke about gabe kapler's national anthem protest. >> what is unique about being in professional sports these days, we have a platform and i don't ever feel like everybody has to use that platform. i just feel like if you feel comfortable doing so, it is important to do so. i applaud gabe for sticking his neck out, and i'm sure he will take a lot of flak for it. but again, my view is peaceful protest is the american way. >> kapler has avoided the field during the national anthem as a

protest after the texas shooting. he said he may suspend the decision during memorial day. a shooting -- a -- i suspect in a shooting in sacramento has been captured. a man was arrested during the last -- near the las vegas police -- las vegas strip. police say he opened fire on april 3. he and two brothers were charged with three counts of murder. they are accused of taking part in a gun battle that killed six people and hurt 12 others outside a nightclub. developing news in napa county, the husband of nancy pelosi has been arrested for driving under the influence. j.r. stone joins us live in the newsroom with the details. >> paul pelosi was arrested last night, according to the napa county booking report. his bail $5,000 and records indicate he was released this

morning. he is charged with you why and driving with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit of 0.08, both charges misdemeanors. he was booked into jail at 4:13 this morning. the sheriff's office hasn't released other details, nor has chp. the county says they haven't -- county hasn't told us where this happened, where paul pelosi was going or where he was coming from. they have been married since 1960 three. nancy pelosi's office said the speaker will not be commenting on the private matter that occurred while she was on the east coast. she was in rhode island to speak at brown university today. reaction has been coming in from around the country and on both sides of the political aisle. i will talk more about that at 11:00. i just spoke with those from chp who tell me the full report in this case has yet to be released
