splashdown for a man wearing a jet pack. and the new delorean taking car buyers back to the future. good morning, everyone. we begin with the violent weather that's left behind widespread damage in the midwest. >> minnesota has been particularly hard hit. despite the damage, there are no reports of deaths or serious injuries. >> the strong storms took down trees and left tens of thousands of people without power. overnight, extreme weather pounding the midwest. >> that looks pretty dangerous. look at that. >> multiple tornadoes touching down in western minnesota. the city of forada taking heavy storm damage. this drone footage showing dozens of homes destroyed or damaged. officials say as many as 50 homes may have been hit. downed trees and power lines

making many roads impassable. crews on active rescue duty last night going door to door to make sure everyone was safe. the town of plato also taking damage leveling barns. in todd county, officials asking everyone to steer clear of eagle bend as they cleared roads and assessed damage. these massive grain silos and the region still expected to see dangerous weather tuesday. >> the lower peninsula of chicago, central missouri, wichita, back to childress needs lyor damaging winds. >> reporter: now all eyes are on mexico where a historic hurricane made landfall. agatha, the first named storm of the season, slamming into mexico's pacific coast monday afternoon. the category 2 storm bringing winds over 100 miles per hour and up to 20 inches of rain. experts warning of dangerous coastal flooding and life-threatening hurricane force winds.

flash floods and mudslides could also occur. the national hurricane center says agatha is the strongest hurricane to make landfall in may along mexico's pacific coast since recordkeeping began in 1949. forecasters says once agatha crosses mexico, it could redevelop into another storm. the heartbreaking farewells in uvalde, texas, mourners gathering today at the first funeral services for the victims of last week's horrific school shooting. families are demanding answers as they lay their loved ones to rest, and democrats and republicans are coming together in hopes of finding some common ground on gun reform. abc's justin finch joins us with the very latest. good morning, justin. >> reporter: andrew, good morning. uvalde and the nation still reeling, one full week after 19 students and 2 teachers were gunned down. their families now demanding their deaths not be in vain. the first of 21 final farewells now beginning in uvalde. >> it's heartbreaking, and i can't begin to imagine what

these families are going through. >> reporter: seven days ago panic at robb elementary. abc news obtaining video of frantic moments outside the school. >> guy with a rifle. >> reporter: police breaking a window to pull children to safety. >> somebody jump out of the window. >> oh, the kids. they're getting the kids out. >> reporter: a camera capturing what sounds like a dispatcher telling officers a student is calling from a classroom. >> he is inside of the building. he is in the room full of victims. >> reporter: texas officials say uvalde's school police chief pete arradondo wrongly believed they were dealing with a barricaded subject. he ordered not to enter the classroom where children were calling 911 for help. sources tell abc news federal agents finally used a custodian's key to get inside and kill the gunman. uvalde's mayor announcing

arradondo's scheduled city council swearing in ceremony is canceled for now as the city grieves. the police response to robb elementary under state and federal investigation. in uvalde, children joining calls for change. >> if we want to heal, we need some new rules because if we don't change, nothing -- it's going to be the same and it's going to happen again and again. >> reporter: in washington president biden's pushing a bipartisan group of house and senate members to continue work on gun reform. >> i think there's a recognition in their part that you can't continue like this. i know that it makes no sense to be able to purchase something that can fire up to 300 rounds. >> reporter: and that bipartisan group will hold a zoom call today to review possible reforms including red flag warnings and expanding background checks with hopes of reaching a deal on a framework by next week. andrew. >> justin, thank you. in canada prime minister justin trudeau's government

introduced legislation to put a national freeze on handgun ownership. the package would cap the market for handguns making it illegal to buy, sell, transfer or import them anywhere in canada. trudeau made the announcement surrounded by families of shooting victims. >> but as a government, as a society, we have a responsibility to act to prevent more tragedies. we need only look south of the border to know that if we do not take action, firmly and rapidly, it gets worse and worse and more difficult to counter. >> also included in canada's new legislation, long gun magazines will never hold more than five rounds. the law is expected to be enacted this fall. calls for peace in chicago over the holiday weekend went unanswered as shootings increased over last year, 48 people were shot in the windy city between friday and monday. nine of the victims died. this year's gunfire included two mass shootings on sunday.

last year in chicago, 37 people were shot over memorial day. now overseas, significant new sanctions against russia. the european union is banning russian oil imports that arrive by sea. the embargo will eventually cut off 90% of the russian oil shipped to the eu and a senior u.s. official says president biden has made no final decision about sending ukraine a certain high-tech weapons system. all that as russia's military is gaining ground in eastern ukraine. abc's tom soufi burridge reports. >> reporter: russian soldiers touring freshly taken territory and showing the utter inging to eastern ukraine.is the video airing on kremlin friendly tv showing hellish scenes inside the city of severodonetsk, the focus of the russian advance. more fierce fighting nearby and ukrainian police going door to do warning civilians to leave.

a i canada. three teens just avoided being hit by an oncoming train in toronto. the crew said it appeared two of them were trying to outrun the train. no one was hurt. fortunately, officials say one teen was missed by just a foot. now to virginia where some memorial day fun on a river went terribly wrong for a group of people who somehow went over a dam. rescuers have pulled most of the group to safety. >> this morning two women are missing after a group of people went over a dam in richmond, virginia. >> we have ten person that's have been brought to the bank.

reportedly two still in the water. >> reporter: officials say a group of 12 people went over the dam on the james river just after monday afternoon. nine people were able to land by themselves. two women remain unaccounted for. the crews spent hours methodically searching the river. >> after a very thorough search today, this evening, we seased operations this evening because of night fall. >> reporter: it is unknown what kind of flotation devices they are using. drone video taken just after the incident shows surfboards. >> we are very hopeful. we will give it our best effort. >> officials say recent rain brought the river to unsafe high water level. the meeting follows remarks by a federal reserve official who was calling for aggressive rate hikes to combat inflation. that governor, christopher waller, said he wants to raise interest rates by a halve percentage point at every
