moving forward, finding solutions, abc7news. >> a wildfire in napa county has burned 570 acres. it is less active after hours of burning but firefighters are not letting up on the fight. tonight some residents are still clipped from their homes. it is to the north of napa and less than three miles from the famous silverado resort. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. meteorologist sandy patel is here with weather conditions on the fire line. let's begin with abc 7 reporter tim johns live in napa county. >> dan, i am here on soto canyon road where officials have set up a base of operations. calfire began battling the blades around 3:30 in the afternoon. they plan on being out here the rest of the night. as of tuesday night the fire has been burning off of soda springs

road in napa county. evacuations were ordered for some residents just after 4:00 p.m.. crews are battling the plates from the ground and sky. >> topography is not in our favor since we are dealing with sloped areas. it has been a challenge to get to some of the rural areas. ask the cause of the fire is under investigation. he lives in the area and believes he saw the fire began. he was sitting outside just as the wind began to pick up. >> we heard a pop and then a spark fly out of a telephone pole box. >> a few moments later he noticed flames from that location. >> firefighters and residents say this is the same spot as the atlas fire in 2017. >> that fire burned tens of thousands of acres and lasted for weeks.

it is an experience that prompted him and his to take extra steps to help reduce the threat of future wildfires. around here has been working hard to tina fey to to, cleanup brush. -- two cleanup vegetation, two cleanup brush. >> he says he is not worried. instead, he is placing trust in people fighting it head on. >> we know they will keep these fires under control. >> napa county officials set up an evacuation center at the crosswalk at community church where folks can access food, water, shelter, and other resources. live in napa county tonight, tim johns abc7news. >> let's go to meteorologist andy patel with more -- sandhya patel with more on fire conditions. >> right now i am happy to report conditions improved.

southeast, wind only gusting to two miles per hour. humidity is way up from the teens earlier this afternoon when the fire broke out the 49% now. it is cooler, 63 degrees. wind will remain light through the night. that will help firefighters gain ground. then they will pick up tomorrow afternoon and evening and we will see gusty wind again. this is concerning. smoke from the fire, you can see it moving southward from the fire. into the napa valley and also around parts of the east bay. fortunately, now, the air quality is good in the area but the air district issued an air quality advisory in effect through tomorrow as of the wildfire smoke will settle tomorrow morning and it will be heaviest concentrated in the napa valley area but also there could be issues. i will be back with a closer look at what you can do to keep yourself safe was a look at what is ahead, exactly what we need

>> this week alone we saw more action in canada 1000 miles away than in our own country. that is unacceptable. j.r: san francisco mayor london breed referred to the guns used in uvalde, texas, and other school shootings as weapons of mass destruction. she vowed to continue rallying until changes are made. >> until we get rid of the gun lobby. until we eradicate weapons of mass destruction. until our policymakers in congress have the courage to do what is necessary, we will have to continue to be here. j.r: cassondra represents the united educators of san francisco union and wants change on a federal and local level. >> we need more social workers in every school. we need more counselors, one-on-one therapy for students and families. >> to make it harder for people to get guns where their emotions may be taking over rather than a

logical decision to decide to buy a gun. j.r: many of these here are referencing gun violence in san francisco and other bay area communities. some changes need to be made because we are not immune to seeing the kind of shooting we saw in texas i out here. j.r. stone, abc7news. >> you are expecting news of a mass shooting with the statistics now. that should not be the case. dan: the tragic impact of the shooting in uvalde sparked a strong reaction from students at pleasanton's thomas hart middle school led by student ayana hasan, walking out of school calling for gun reform laws. in uvalde tonight investigators continue to go through the shooting minute by minute. state authorities are now correcting an earlier claim that

the gunman entered through a door a teacher left open. tonight they say the door was closed. but for unknown reasons, it did not lock. abc news reporter morgan norwood has more on the investigation as the first victim was laid to rest today. morgan: one by one a grieving friends and families saying their goodbyes to the 19 children and two teachers gunned down in robb elementary school. the first round of sewer versus -- services were held for amerie jo garza and alithia ramirez. >> it is as if it is one huge funeral that is not ending. morgan: the demand for answers over police response with the gunman inside for 77 minutes swells. uvalde police are no longer cooperating with the state review of their response. the school board conducted an active shooter training in march

that required the police to immediately confront the suspect. the on scene commander that day ordered tactical teams to not enter the classrooms, wrongly believing they were no longer dealing with an active shooter but a barricaded suspect. >> of course it was the wrong decision. morgan: in new video you can overhear a dispatcher reporting that a student is calling from the classroom. >> he is in the room full of victims. morgan: the girl calls minutes later, this time telling dispatchers there are eight to nine students alive. at this point, it has been 41 minutes since police arrived on scene but they still have not got in. >> at 12:47 she asks 911 to send the police. shots can be heard. morgan: the carnage ended when the border patrol decided to use a custodians key to breach of the door and kill the gunman.

residents are being asked to shape the future of the city. election day, next tuesday, voters will choose the next mayor and half the city council members. residents will vote on santa clara county's next sheriff and district attorney. all are critical decisions at a time when early voting numbers are low. amanda del castillo highlights how some are hoping to increase voter turnout by hitting the streets. amanda: with the primary election only one week away, a block party is being planned in the heart of san jose to boost

voter turnout. evening to the city's pimply historic district. organizers say to put a focus on democracy. >> especially for under representative -- underrepresented community. amanda: according to a ballot tracker, early voting numbers are low. as of tuesday only 9% of california voters had returned their ballots, around 2 million people. experts admit primary elections tend to have lower turnouts compared to presidential primaries. that is one reason that silicon valley rise in action behind the brock party is moving to pass measure b that would move the governor's election to the presidential cycle beginning 2024. >> a small date change can have profound effects in the 10th largest cities in the country.
