parasailing accident. now reports saying the boat's captain cut the line towing them. plus, the ruling expected that could make masks mandatory on planes again. lucrative gig where dozens of life guards are earning salaries in the high six figures. and bts visits the white house with the koch pop super group had to say to president biden. from abc news in new york, this is "america this morning." >> good wednesday morning. we begin with a top biden administration official acknowledging they misread the threat of inflation. >> treasury secretary janet yellen said she was wrong in believing inflation would not pose a long-term problem. now, last year yellen called inflation a, quote, small risk. now americans are paying a lot more for just about everything. >> it comes as president biden holds a rare meeting with the federal reserve and gas prices hit another record high.

>> reporter: drivers at this gas station in downtown los angeles are paying more than $8 a gallon. and the national average for gas hit another record. $4.62. >> right now, over $100 to fill up the tank. >> reporter: rising fuel and food costs have angered many americans heading into the mid-term elections putting democrats' control of the house and senate at risk. now janet yellen acknowledges she was wrong in march of 2021 when she said rising inflation posed a, quote, small risk. >> i think i was wrong then about the path innation would take. we recognize that now the federal reserve is taking the steps that it needs to take. it is up to them to decide what to do. >> reporter: it shows americans are paying 8.3% more for just about everything since last year. president biden called fighting

inflation his top priority, holding a rare meeting with the chairman. federal reserve. the president reit rated his pledge to the central bank's independence. they plan the raise plans. >> it starts with a simple proposition. respect the fed. respect the fed's independence, chif done and will continue to do. >> reporter: after the meeting, the director of the white house economic council said the u.s. is well positioned compared to other parts of the world experiencing similar rates of inflation. >> it is a challenge that the president understands is hitting american families and creating anxiety and economic hardship. >> reporter: but critics blame the president's own policies. >> he says i want an open and honest discussion. but that's not what he wants. he wants plate talking point to say i have a plan. >> a reason poll found 68% disapprove of the president's handling of inflation compared to 28% who approve.

the other big story we're following, the u.s. is sending more advance rockets to help ukraine in its fight against russia. it is a new military aid package being announced today. ukrainian leaders have been asking for the high-tech rocket systems which can hit targets 45 miles away. those systems are expected to be used in the fight for the eastern ukraine's donbas region which russia has made recent gains. >> reporter: they are dug in. the russians are only a few miles away from this position. you can see they dug into the trenches here. we're hearing the sound of artillery going. this area is coming under increasing fire. the russians determined to take this land. >> reporter: in addition to the medium range missiles, the $700 million aid package includes helicopters, anti-tank missiles and tactical vehicles. now to the grieving city of

uvalde, texas, bracing for a second day of funerals. they say they are no longer hearing from the police chief blamed for the delayed response to the school massacre and the story of how things unfolded the day of the shooting is changing once again. justin finch joins us from washington with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. several law enforcement sources tell abc news, uvalde school's police chief, they criticized the delayed response. that as uvalde now begins days of final farewells. >> at the sacred heart catholic church, a farewell. >> just gone from my heart. it feels horrible. >> reporter: garza and 10-year-old marta rodriguez both laid to rest tuesday. father morales who is presiding over at least 12 funerals for victim of the robb elementary

school shootings. >> although i have celebrated many funeral masses, this situation is different. it is as if one huge funeral that is not ending. >> reporter: funeral after funeral as new details emerge in the tragic time line that has brought uvalde to its knees. the texas department of public safety confirming a robb elementary teacher reentering the building after seeing the suspect crash his truck before the shooting, and called 911. her lawyer telling the san antonio express news, she saw the armed suspect went back inside the school and closed the door. adding she thought the door would lock because that door is always supposed to be locked. this as state officials say uvalde school's police chief, pete arredondo, is no longer cooperating with its investigators after his initial interview. law enforcement sources say uvalde police and uvalde school police are also not complying but the state later released a statement saying, both agencies

have been cumming. several law enforcement sources tell abc news, arredondo's refusal comes after the texas dps director called the police' dlayed response the wrong decision. arredondo reportedly ordered tactical teams to not go into a classroom, wrongly believing there was a barricaded suspect. not an active shatter. abc news has learned that uvalde school police were trained in march to confront active shooters. the response last week under state and federal investigation. back to you. >> thank you. gun reform talks resumed with a bipartisan group of senators hoping to reach a compromise by next week. the changes under consideration include expand background checks to take away guns from people deemed dangerous. but there is little chance of getting enough republicans on board. >> this morning as the victims in the texas school shooting are laid to rest, president biden is promising to meet with congress

on guns. >> i've been to more mass shooting memorials than any presdent in history. and so much of it is preventible. >> reporter: on tuesday, the president meeting with new zealand prime minister, praising her success and passing a ban on military style semi-automatic weapons after a white supremacist killed 51 muslim worshippers in 2019. the white house said the president would support similar legislation. >> he supports a ban on assault weapons. >> reporter: but the administration says passing any new gun legislation would be an uphill battle. senators discussed gun reform. >> my plan is to get a bill, a comprehensive bill that will save lives. >> opponets argue gun restrictions do not work and instead, are calling for a focus on mental health.

>> the problem, mental illness and school safety. >> reporter: meanwhile, lawmaker in the house plan to vote aerls as tomorrow on a package of bills known as the protecting our kids act. it would include laws to raise the age to purchase a semi-automatic center fire rifle from 18 to 21. making it illegal to possess large capacity magazines with few exceptions. the legislation will likely pass the democrat-controlled house but unlikely to get the at least ten republicans needed to pass in the senate. while gun legislation stalls in washington, local leaders are voicing their outrage. >> i'm mad about it. i'm fed up. and i concur with many of our citizens here and across this country, that enough is enough. and this issue of gun violence has to be addressed. >> reporter: in new york, the governor announce ad package of gun reform bills that would raise the minimum age to buy a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to

21 and limit who can buy bullet-proof vests. residents in a wide area of minnesota have been cheek up damage caused by tornadoes. a half mile path with winds at 120 miles an hour was confirmed. one community confirmed damage to 120 buildings. with that, a look at the morning weather. good morning. another stormy day expected on the plains and midwest from st. louis to kansas city, oklahoma city to amarillo, with some severe wind and hail, too. here in the northeast, it will be stormy, flooding down with a few tornadoes, gusty winds with some thunderstorms that will cool you down in a big way across the eastern great lakes. meanwhile, a possible tropical storm this weekend.

the boulders kicked up a huge wave. fortunately no one was hurt. one scientists blamed the slide on the lake's falling water levels. questions this morning after a deadly parasailing accident in florida. a woman was killed. her young son and nephew both hurt. the tragic happening after the recreational device went out of control. >> reporter: this morning an investigation is underway into how a young mother from illinois died while parasailing on memorial day in the florida keys. there is a report that indicates he cut the line to her son and nephew when a strong gust of wind caught the parasail, impeding the safe operation of the vessel. once the line was cut, they plunged into the water and were dragged across the surface before they hit the old seven-mile bridge. >> all of a sudden, the wind got really bad.
