it is cool on the coast, 50's and 60's. still close to 90 degrees inland. we will look at that high and the cooler weather over the next several days in about eight minutes. reggie: nevada fired us to get into because of a fire that left one person dead your center road and womack avenue. flames were burning on the second floor and crews arrived. one person died, another victim was taken to the hospital. kumasi: now two new details in the texas school shooting. the uvalde police department and police chief are no longer cooperating with state investigators. the decision was made after the director of the texas to augment of public safety said they did -- said the decision to enter -- to delay entering the classroom was the wrong decision. a small group of senators are trying to reach a compromise. they are considering background

checks and red flag laws. there is little chance of this getting past and getting republicans on board. jobina: the biden administration big homages passing any gun legislation will be in a uphill battle with republicans are giving restrictions don't work. bipartisan citizens met to discuss gun reform. lawmakers could move to act on bills called protecting our kids act. it would make it illegal to have large capacity magazines with few exceptions and establish regulations for storing firearms. while proposals are expected to stall, local leaders across the country are demanding action. >> i am mad about it. i am fed up. i concur with many of our citizens here and across this country that enough is enough. this issue of gun violence has to be addressed.

jobina: president biden is promising to meet with congress on guns. -- reggie: as people and the uvalde, texas prepare for a second day of funerals, bay area teachers are remembering the students and teachers killed. they held a memorial at city hall where they also called for reforms. >> teachers from across the country are saying it is not safe. people are not going into teaching anymore. this is another factor. reporter: kim of the san francisco labor council referring to the uvalde texas shooting was one of several teachers -- several speakers involved in the action at city hall tuesday night. >> this week we saw more action take place in canada than in our own country. that is unacceptable. reporter: mayor london breed referred to the guns used in

amy hollyfield joining us live with more on this. amy: firefighters worked on this one all night long. you can still smell smoke in the air here. the weather is calm. there is no wind and it is very cool this morning. firefighters were able to lift the evacuation order around midnight so residents were allowed to return to their homes. firefighters were able to attack this one from above and on the ground. this fire started around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. it burns north of the city of napa near so tick canyon road and old soda springs road. it is a rule area and known for fire activity. the atlas fire burned here in 2017 so residents know they need to take precautions before heading into summer months. >> everyone i know around here has been working hard to clean up vegetation and cleanup brush.

at this moment, they have a laser focus on addressing inflation. reporter: experts say the meeting may not do anything other than bring reassurance to people because the federal agents -- the federal reserve is a private agency. still, they have a duty to get the economy back on track. >> they are doing quantitative tightening which is they are trying to pull money out of the economy which reduces the money supply. that should push down on inflation. reporter: there are some positives to the current economic client -- climate, including a stronger job market and a chance to pay off credit card debt before interest rates go up. >> focus on what they need to buy instead of what they desire to buy. those things could help families. reporter: if the supply chain keeps moving and no crisis interrupts, relief could come in six months or more.

kumasi: we are seeing another day of record-breaking gas prices. the statewide average is up three cents overnight. in the bay area, the average prices are nearly 650 -- $6.50 per gallon. san jose is at $6.43. oakland is $6.32. california's overall average is $6.19. this is the chevron in downtown l.a.. it is charging $8.05 for a gallon of regular. reggie: that is interesting because it is only a two cents difference between the regular and supreme. kumasi: it is not like that usually? reggie: it is usually a bigger jump. i am glad i do not have diesel. if you're planning to travel this summer and have not booked airfare yet, now is the time. here is gio benitez. reporter: get ready for the

burning north of the city of napa. people evacuated from their homes got to go back a few hours ago. amy hollyfield covering what is being called the old fire. amy: good morning. we are on soda canyon. we don't -- soda canyon road. it is very smoky here. you can still definitely feel the effects and smell the effects from this fire heard firefighters say they felt like they had a good handle on this last night. at midnight, they lifted evacuation orders so residents were allowed to return to their homes. calfire put on quite an air show and attacked it from up above with tankers, helicopters. they were fighting us on the ground and fighting this one all night long. it started at 3:30 yesterday afternoon and they are calling this the old fire. it burned north ofick road and

old soda springs road. the atlas fire burned here in 2017. firefighters say it is a tough area for them to do their firefight. >> topography is not in our favor since we are dealing with sloped areas. it has been a challenge to get to some of these remote areas. amy: firefighters were feeling confident last night they had the upper hand. that is when they lifted the evacuation orders they put in place yesterday. they set up a community center evacuation center for residents. they let them back in but said they have to be careful this morning when they return home. there are a lot of emergency vehicles in the area. firefighters are not turning their back on this one. they are working to dig out containment lines. last night, they said it burned

570 acres and they contained 5% of it. this morning, we are hoping to get an up on those numbers. no injuries have reported and no structures have been damaged. amy hollyfield, abc7news. kumasi: the suspect accused of burning down a home depot is due in court today. dylan set this fire on april as a diversion to steal tools. he is charged with other thefts dating back to october last year and could spend life in prison. reggie: funerals will take place today in uvalde, texas. friends and community remember jose flores, irma garcia, and her husband who died days after the shooting. now learning more about the law enforcement response at the school. one teacher has hired a lawyer to contradict information given by investigators. jobina: the texas department of

public safety has changed their timeline of events. investigators said the going to her car. the lawyer agrees she went outside but claims she saw the arm suspect and went inside, closing the door. she thought it would lock because that door is always supposed to be locked. investigators now say they agree with her claims. that door is key because that is how the suspect got inside the school. abc news sources say uvalde lease and the police chief have stopped cooperating with investigators. the chief's refusal comes after the public safety safety department a director called uvalde's police response the bonded decision -- the wrong decision. the chief ordered tactical teams to not go into the classroom believing there was a barricaded suspect and not an active shooter. >> you are expecting news of

mass shootings every day with the statistics we have. that should not be the case. kumasi: the impact of the shooting in uvalde has sparked a reaction from students at pleasanton's thomas hardiman school. hundreds of students walked out yesterday calling for better gun-control locks -- gun-control laws. some of them are urging lawmakers to take action. reggie: now to the return of covid and the return of people to the streets of shanghai. city leaders called for lockdown's success. it comes with the rollback of strict rules that disrupted the life for millions and impact of the chinese economy and global supply chains. there is backlash against the president's zero covid policy which is seeing -- seen as trembling civil rights. kumasi: -- airlines in america

party plans. drew: what was hurricane agatha weakened into a depression. is now forecasted to move into the gulf of mexico where it could form a new storm by this weekend. the first known storm landed monday causing flooding and landslides that killed at least 11 p and left 20 missing agatha made history as the strongest hurricane to come ashore in may in the eastern pacific. hurricane season begins in the atlantic basin. we are forecast to have an above average season when it comes to hurricanes. that's home, the fog is back. we are fogged in across 101 and that expands their parts of the day this morning. a light breeze right now but we will find the onshore flow areawide strength tomorrow afternoon.
