building a better bay area moving forward finding sol. this is abc 7 news. new details are emerging tonight from the family of missing east baywoman, alexis gabe today gabe's parents told abc 7 that they have spoken to the family of the man accused of killing their daughter. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim and i'm dan ashley now. this news comes one day after investigators announced the death of gabe's ex-boyfriend identifying him as a suspect in her disappearance and death abc 7 news reporter karina. nova joins us live from the newsroom with more on this story karina. well today, are hearing more from alexis gabe's parents who shared the conversation they had with the suspect's family. that suspect was alexis's ex-boyfriend. we've been covering this case for months the 24 year old woman

from oakley has not been seen since january wednesday night. alexis's ex-boyfriend marshall curtis. jones was killed by officers. washington state when they tried to arrest him at his new home jones was charged with alexis gabe's murder police say he was the last person who saw her among the evidence oakley police discovered was a cell phone case found near where jones used to live in antioch. the phone case belonged to alexis and according to police had jones dna on it now her parents tell abc 7. they spoke to jones' mother who reached out for the first time. they won. we have not heard anything from them until this morning. um, marshall's mom reached out to us and she was she said she was very shameful that she just now reached out to us and she was apologizing. it was very emotional between her and my wife it was a very

emotional conversation. police have not yet located alexis's body. her family says they're not giving up until she is found. alexis's parents say they are grateful for the work oakley police has done for the last four months to gather evidence and help solve this case. they also believe jones had help as do police a 100,000 reward is available for anyone with information that could lead to oakley police to alexis's body live in the newsroom. i'm karina, nova. all right, karina. thank you in solano county ch, officers are investigating a crash that killed a caltrans worker. it happened on interstate 80 and vacaville near lagoon valley road, just after ten o'clock this morning and as abc 7 news reporter under hassan explains investigators now have a suspect in custody. he was part. way he got out and he was shattered it's good as the office manager solano property management where the alleged suspect of the fatal hit and run

parked after. accident which happened a few miles down the road. slanker says chp and fairfield police arrive minutes later when the alleged suspects surrendered without incident. we were told chp came in fairfield police department came in first and he came in and said that it was actually a homicide investigation and that he had killed a caltrans worker on interstate 80 and then chp came in and reiterated that so this time the accident is a ongoing investigation. we can confirm that there was a fatal traffic collision and that there is a suspect investigate this time chp and caltrans did not give any information about the victim. the only details released are that just after 10 am the caltrans employee was hit and killed allegedly by the suspect's car on i-80 near laguna valley road valley road between vacaville and fairfield. two lanes were blocked which had traffic backed up for hours until the scene could be cleared senker says law enforcement ask

federal prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty. underwood was inside a guard shack at the oakland federal building in may of 2020 when he was hit with bullets fired from white van the judge approved the 41-year sentence as part of a plea deal in the south bay investigators are looking into at least two hate. including the arrest of a man accused of hurling racist slurs and then punching a woman so hard she temporarily lost sight in her eye abc 7 news reporter. zach fuentes has more on these disturbing details. this cupertino t-mobile store is the site of the latest hate crime being investigated in santa clara county. the da says this man clifford stewart threw a sign outside of the store into the street a hispanic female employee and an asian male employee went outside to get it back stuart started yelling racial slurs at the two before becoming even more violent. he attacked the hispanic woman kicked her in the stomach punched her in the face.

she temporarily lost sight of her vision da says stewart then threatened to kill a sheriff's deputy and yelled racial slurs at him too stuart refused to appear before a judge for arraignment friday his court date moved to monday. he's being held without bail and faces several years in prison that attack comes after another south bay hate crime on may 28th. it happened at this starbucks in mountain view. the da says dietitian quan hurled racial slurs at a manager attacked a customer all while telling them that they should go back to their country quan is also accused of trying to attack a young girl before that child's. intervened in 2020. we filed more hate crimes than we ever had in the last 10 years in the da's office here only to be exceeded by 2021 when we filed more hate crimes in a year than we've ever filed so far in 2022 things have calmed a little bit. it's too early to know how many a crimes there will be county supervisor cindy chavez helped form the county's hate crime task force. she says many hate crimes are

going unreported with some too nervous to call 911. they're developing a hotline that people can call if they're experiencing a hate crime. the other thing is that we need to do a lot more education with all of our public safety officers, you know the whole system. so the system knows how to respond to a hate crime because again that distinction between an incident and a crime can be a fine line in santa clara county zach fuentes abc 7 news. cal fire is looking into whether a faulty pg&e power line sparked the 570 acre old fire that started tuesday in napa that is according to a report pg&e sent to state regulators. cal fire officials had asked the utility for fault data online near the fire. pg&e said it then detected a fault near the suspected origin of the blaze that fault happened within minutes of the start of the fire. and pg&e released this statement today reading in part yesterday. eight out of an abundance of caution. we filed an electric incident report with the california

area napa county has the highest gas prices averaging $6.51 a gallon. san francisco is at six dollars and fifty cents are least expensive county is contra costa, which is averaging a gallon of regular for $6.39. the bay area does continue to be the most expensive. region in california and therefore the nation for gas in the south bay today, san jose mayor sam licardo assembly members evan lowe and ash cholera toured a quick build community. it is one of many built in the city in the last few years. thanks to state funding that will expire soon. but as abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains. the mayor is hoping the success stories here will help reinstate the funding. welcome to the evans lane community. what looks like a normal. hood, but here lives change. thanks to the path homeless advocate resources here 10 previously homeless families have found permanent housing including lydia burnett's family anything i needed.

and she has been worried for her parents during the war with russia. it makes me very sad. very sad. i was i was already home sick during this semester, but now i'm even more homesick her mother. for poland her father has had to stay behind and kiev because men are not allowed to leave returning to ukraine for the summer isn't a safe option for sophia the ceo of bay area tech company ai started appealing to other executives to create internships. so sophia and other ukrainians can stay earn money and gain some work experience. what matters to me most at this moment as a freshman is getting experience in the field of study that i like that i want to purse you and getting some experience that i can write about in my on my resume my computer science major. sophia will spend the summer working on a lidar-related project at ai along with two other ukrainians working on safety systems for cars and

people it's not just that they can stay in the country. it's that we're giving them a chance to be part of a tribe or a group and a support network and we're helping them get some so that they feel like they're creating value accord and is ai team created a database of ukrainian students as a resource for other companies. we've been a tremendous amount of response over the last two weeks. i think we still have 40 or 50 students that are actively looking for something to do. sophia will still be 6100 miles away from her parents. she says she also misses her dogs, but her internship will provide some stability during the war david louis abc 7. still ahead extending the hours of alcohol sales to four in the morning. we'll hear from state lawmakers behind the renewed push to change laws in california.

scott weiner is renewing his push to extend drinking hours in california. today wiener and assemblyman matt haney introduced legislation that will allow bars and nightclubs along with restaurants to sell alcohol until four in the morning. the extended hours would only be permitted in seven pilot cities including san francisco and oakland. when you think of why people move to cities there are many reasons and one of them is that they want to have vibrant nightlife. they want to be able to have fun and enjoy themselves.

look at these wins gusting up around 20 25 miles per hour. they're starting to back off and they'll continue to do that through the nine o'clock hour what they did do is look at this santa rosa's about 16 degrees cooler than yesterday right now about 69 degrees a a lot of upper 60s up. down highway 101 there head over to napa 72 ukiah a little bit nicer at 71 the rest of us around the bay in the mid to upper 60s safe. san francisco 60 coleman 59 and then we have some 70s in the south bay and 60s and 70s as you head to the inland east bay neighborhoods our emeryville camera showing cloudy conditions and they'll continue to get cloudy here as we head through the evening hours. we're starting off pretty cool for your evening activities mainly in the mid-upper 60s 50s at the coast and then we're mainly in the mid 50s to mid 60s by ten o'clock tonight under cover will fall down into the low to mid 50s in most neighborhoods tomorrow. the greatest amount of warming will be where the sun is the strongest or able to get through the clouds the most where they're thinnest in the south bay and our inland east bay neighborhoods the mid to upper 70s there we'll have upper 60s a low 70s around the bay and same

thing up in the north bay where we have our best chance of some wet weather. it'll be mostly cloudy around most of our bay area airports about 70 to 77 if you're traveling elsewhere, it looks like we're going to have pretty quiet conditions, which is sunshine. places like la to mostly cloudy conditions in chicago for us. here's future radar and you can see it is very cloudy as we head through the overnight hours those sprinkles best up across the north bay and then look at the chance of rain increase as we head into tomorrow afternoon across the north bay light to moderate green to yellow there and overnight some of these start to slide southward but knows we lose the yellow they lose intensity and by the time we get to about one o'clock in the afternoon sunday any chance is over and we'll actually have some sunshine breakout late in the afternoon. rain fall amounts of places like our inland east bay and south bay neighborhoods pretty much nothing a couple of hundreds around the bay a possibility for a daily record rainfall though in santa rosa. we'll keep an eye on that our two coolest days in the forecasts are saturday and sunday and look at that heat
