forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. it's the eve of election day in addition to the bay area district attorney's races and recall effort. we're hearing from before frontrunners vying to lead the bay area's. most populous city. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm karina nova voters in san jose are getting ready to select a new mayor. that's a big day and tonight abc 7 news reporter zach fuente spoke with the four top front runners about what they believe they can offer residents in the heart of silicon valley. san jose mayor sam licardo has termed out of office and waiting in the wings to replace him are seven candidates four of whom currently serve in local government and are considered top candidates. we got a chance to speak with them to ask what sets them apart from their opponents and what they say they can bring to the

10th largest city in the country. we'll start in alphabetical order with cindy chavez. currently a santa clara county supervisor. she's received endorsements from a handful of prominent state politicians if elected may or she says she's looking to tackle things like homelessness crime and affordable housing. it's important that we not only have people who are experienced, but people have a track record of success because what we're going to be facing now is so much more challenging than what we face in the past. next up is dev davis who is currently a san jose city councilmember. she counts former mayor of san jose chuck read as one of her supporters. she says if she's elected making the city safer and homelessness our top priorities. we need to not only double down but triple down our homeless prevention strategies as well as ensuring that we of safety sanitation and services for all of the shelter and housing options that we provide canvassing neighborhoods. monday was candidate matt mahan also a city council member. he has the endorsement of the mercury news like the other candidates crime and homelessness is at the top of his list and on homelessness.

well, we're working hard to help people. we aren't helping enough people and we're we need to turn the corner. we've got to be much more pragmatic about investing in addiction treatment mental health treatment effective shelter and bringing people. lasted the forefront runners is city councilmember raul perales endorsed by four current san jose city council members his top issues also include affordable housing and homelessness. i've seen that grow over the last seven years by literally by the thousands. we've seen our homeless population grow. we have people suffering and dying out in our streets and we need to to get a handle on that the three other candidates include james spence a retired police sergeant and students travis hill and marshall allen woodman see the winning candidate has to get more than half of the vote in tuesday's primary. if no one does the two candidates with the most votes run in november in the general election in san jose zach fuentes abc 7 news. one of the biggest local races being monitored nationally is proposition age the effort to

recall san francisco district attorney chase a boudin this afternoon boudin took advantage of early voting to cast his ballot at city hall. his opponents have criticized his efforts to implement criminal justice. warm if proposition h passes mayor london breed would appoint his replacement houdin was elected in 2019 defeating interim district attorney susie loftus and with the national debate around criminal justice reform the two district attorney races in the east bay could prove to be historic regardless of who wins alameda county will have its first ever black da and in contra costa county the only black district attorney in the state is fighting to keep her position abc 7 news reporter unser. and has a breakdown of the candidates. alameda county district attorney nancy o'malley is retiring and didn't name a successor. that will be up to voters district attorneys have so much influence and power that many members of the public may be unaware of terrence evans is a partner at the global law firm duane morris, raise cold leader

of international banking. he's also the current president of the charles houston bar association the oldest black bar association in california all of the candidates in the alameda county da race are also members. i think one thing that all for these candidates will bring to the table. that personal life experience, but also the experience in the community of everyday working people. just trying to make it and survive. the four candidates are pamela price a civil rights attorney who challenged o'malley in 2018, seth stewart. he's chief of staff to oakland city councilmember dan kalb, then there's terry wiley 32 year veteran of the alameda county district. attorney's office. finally jimmy wilson with 18 years of legal experience. people are really recognizing that these all da positions are very important. melinda jackson is a professor of political scientist and jose state. she says given the national discussion around criminal justice reform voters are realizing the important role

local prosecutors play and whoever wins will become the first black da ever in alameda county a county where african-americans are 20 times more likely to be incarcerated than white people in the past. it may have been you know, just oh, you know. i support labor. so, you know, the police union is supporting a candidate that's going to send a signal to me as a labor supporter. i think people may be rethinking some of those endorsements in contra costa county incumbent. dinah becton is currently the only black da in all of california. she sprays for challenging the status quo her challenger and colleague is deputy district attorney mary knox with strong backing from law enforcement if they want someone who was going to push some of these reforms that have already and started over the past term or someone who would go back to more of the status quo. it really depends on what the voters of contra costs are looking for in the east bay ansar hassan abc 7 news.

political data analyst paul mitchell is tracking voter turnout ahead of the election day tomorrow. i spoke with him today on our 3 pm show getting answers. we see pretty record low turnout for this election so far and when we have lower turnout that turn is much less representative of california as a whole? an example the state's 40% latino, but in terms of people who returned to ballot, it's only 15% latino. mitchell went on to say the majority of the california's who voted early are over the age of 65. the lowest turnout is in the 18-34 age range for every one person who's voted in that group five group five seniors have cast a ballot. and stay with abc 7 for election results tomorrow starting at 8:30 pm will be live streaming on the abc 7 bay area app available wherever you stream breaking news in san jose right now where there were terrifying moments for some children who were in a library when shots

were fired into the building. this happened a short time ago with the hill view branch library on hopkins drive. the library is right next door to clyde l. fisher middle school and witnesses. say one person was chasing someone else into the library as they were shooting at them san jose police. say one man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries two parents. tell abc 7 news, that officers are interviewing the kids who saw this whole happen. they be released later from the middle school. san jose police are also working a separate case and searching for a man who got and killed a safeway employees sunday morning and now is abc 7 news reporter. ryan curry tells us investigators are asking the public for help. a boarded-up window and a candle outside. that is what you see at the safeway on hamilton avenue. just after three sunday morning police say an employee got into an altercation with a man inside the store who pulled out a gun and shot the worker he died in the store and the gunman left

before officers arrived. we were working directly with so our management to make sure that we can pull any and all video footage but not just that obviously the human component is much more important people who were present and witnessed what happened or heard what happened should come forward on monday. officer outside deterred people away from the store while investigators work inside san jose police say since it happened in the middle of the night there weren't many witnesses. only two people really knew why this homicide happened one of those persons is being grieved and mourned by his family members and the other one is not in custody anybody going to the safeway following the shooting is being met with signs like this one saying they're sorry for the inconvenience, but this safe way is closed and some of the people we spoke with say they didn't learn about it until we told them i figured like know pipes burst something happened some kind of shortage. i didn't think that i would be told that. unemploy who i might know who i might have interacted with the shot many shoppers who frequently go to the safeway say they didn't expect anything like this to happen. you read about the traffic

accidents and stuff, but but nothing about homicide or something like that other saying the recent shooting events across the nation combined with this incident leave them concerned about the rising issue of gun violence and to hear that someone had that much anger towards an employee who's probably just trying to support their family is really upsetting san jose police say they will explore other leads but have not identified the suspect they're asking anyone from the public to come forward in san jose ryan curry abc 7 news. the man acquitted in the shooting death of kate steinley in 2015 was sentenced by a federal jud. today for felony gun possession jose innes, garcia zarata was sentenced to time served and will be transferred to texas for parole violation. he will likely be deported after that. we're told the judge said he did not believe the explanation that garcia zarata found the gun on san francisco's waterfront and that it went off accidentally killing steinley, but he said

that case was settled jury selection is scheduled to begin next week in the trial of a father and son. charged with the kidnapping murder of former cal poly student kristen smart pretrial hearings are taking place this week for paul and ruben flores. they'll be tried separately in monterey county where the trial was moved due to concerns. they couldn't get a fair trial in san luis obispo county. where smart vanished in 1996 jury selection is scheduled to begin two weeks from today ksbw tv of selena says reporting that some 1500 monterey county residents will receive jury duty. for this case still i had the latest on the parent takeover of an east bay school slated for permanent closure the new demands made today and the response from the school district, but first the president of one of the cal state universities announces her resignation amid concerns over campus sexual harassment and allegations of retaliation abc 7 news at 5 will be right back. news at 5 will be right back. everyone remembers the moment they heard...

plans to step down july 31st saying she wants to give the university a chance to move forward. it's been nearly two weeks since parents of students at one school in oakland took over the school after the district permanently closed it. there was hope that an agreement would be reached but instead more demands were made today abc 7 news senior education reporter land melendez explains what happens next? this morning parents of the now closed parker elementary in oakland remained defiant. we intend to liberate parker elementary school until our demands are met. these are our demands. parents want to vote by the school board to reopen parker. they are also demanding that another school community day school remain open that's where many expelled students end up and they want the district to rescind its decision to close grade six through eight at la. escuelita elementary oakland unified says the vast majority of students and staff at parker

have already accepted placement at other schools. we had to accept elsewhere and we had to accept a neighborhoods that are near here. most of our middle schoolers are going to elmhurst which is over 25 blocks away. many of the kids are used to walking to school since parents took over the facility. the school district has made it clear that they are not allowed to be there. at the same time still parents continue to organize summer programs like stem classes other activities such as gardening and chess or being taught. here's how the district as responded to those programs the district has serious safety concerns about what these individuals are doing on the closed campus. we continue to demand that they seize operation and leave the premises immediately but parents refused to leave in everybody in our community has a skill that we can offer to teach these kids. we can give it to him ourselves.

♪ agmrenovations.com ♪ complex in san francisco will be out of their homes a while longer on friday a water pipe broke on the roof of the 35-story high-rise south of market flooding units forcing residents into local hotels. clean up crews were at the building first thing this morning. one resident tells abc 7 news that a group was planning to meet with building management this evening adding that he heard they could be back in their homes next week, but building management issued a statement saying there is no timeline for when residents will be allowed back in. activists in berkeley are mobilizing ahead of what they say could be a decent decisive moment in the future of people's park this afternoon. they held a rally on the uc berkeley campus announcing the university's plans to build student housing at the site activists say the university is moving out homeless people living at the park and they want the area to remain an open space. the park was put on the national register of historic places last month. alright, let's move on to the
