right now on "america this morning," a teacher who survived being shot during the uvalde, texas, school shooting speaks out for the first time about what he saw as the gunman opened fire. all 11 of his students were killed. >> one of the students from the next-door classroom was saying, officer, we're in here, we're in here. >> what that teacher did for 77 long minutes. plus, new reporting overnight on possible common ground among republicans and democrats in negotiations over reforming the nation's gun laws. also new overnight, the first witness set to testify at this week's primetime hearing into the january 6th capitol riot and the new indictment stemming from the attack. a special guest at a rally for brittney griner.

>> and we're learning more about the 77 terrifying minutes the shooter was inside the school. abc's em nguyen is here with more on that. em, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mona. a teacher who survived the elementary school shooting is offering the most vivid account yet of what happened inside the classrooms that came under attack. a teacher wounded in the uvalde school shooting is describing the chilling moments he encountered the gunman. >> the kids started asking out loud, mr. reyes, what is going on? >> reporter: arnulfo reyes and his students were watching a movie when the shooting started in a classroom connected to his room. >> i said, i don't know what's going on, but let's go ahead and get under the table, get under the table and act like you're asleep. >> reporter: as his students hurried under the table, reyes said he turned around and the gunman was standing in his classroom. he said the teen opened fire almost immediately shooting reyes in the arm and lung then turning the gun on the children. wounded and unable to move,

reyes recalls hearing a child in the adjoining class pleading for police to help, but by then he thinks officers had retreated down the hall outside the classroom. >> one of the students from the next-door classroom was saying, officer, we're in here, we're in here, but they had already left, and then he got up from behind my desk, and he walked over there, and he shot over there again. >> reporter: when it was over, 2 teachers and 19 students were killed including all 11 of reyes' students. >> that teacher telling us also that he had to play dead for 77 minutes. there were long periods of silence ultimately punctuated by law enforcement bursting into that classroom. >> reporter: in the meantime, in washington some common ground is emerging in talks over gun reform, particularly on expanding background checks. sources tell abc news a bipartisan group of senators is now considering a proposal that would change the criminal background check system to access juvenile records which

are often sealed. the alleged gunman in uvalde was 18. it's unclear whether he had a juvenile record that would have prevented him from buying guns. on monday texas senator john cornyn, the lead negotiator for the republicans, signaled that raising the age was off the table calling the idea controversial, but he did suggest opening access to juvenile records during background checks could be an alternative telling reporters yesterday, there seems to be a lot of interest in actually getting a more complete record and not just letting people that turn 18 with criminal or mental health records pass background checks. meanwhile, change is being made on a state level. new york's governor has signed a bill setting new limits on buying assault-style rifles and body armor. mona. >> em, thank you. a virginia congressman has a different idea. don beyer is proposing a 1,000% tax on ar-15-style weapons because it's a tax democrats could theoretically pass with just 51 votes in the senate, but it's still considered unlikely

to pass. all day long today abc news is taking a closer look at the issue of gun safety in america. later this morning, a look at the changes florida made after the parkland school massacre. we're two days away from the january 6th committee's first primetime hearing, and we've learned a filmmaker will be among thursday's first witnesses. nick quested was embedded with the far right group, the proud boys, during the riot at the capitol. he'll be telling his story publicly for the very first time. also set to testify, capitol police officer caroline edwards who was injured during the chaos. meanwhile, five members of the proud boys including its leader have now been indicted for seditious conspiracy. and abc news will bring you live coverage of the hearing thursday and a second primetime hearing has now been scheduled for next monday night. a new record high for gas prices overnight. the average cost nationwide is now $4.91 per gallon. that's 5 cents more than yesterday and more than 30 cents more than last week.

experts say there's no quick solution to the rising prices and they don't expect relief any time soon due to high global demand and the supply shortages following the pandemic and russia's invasion of ukraine. now to a rally held what is night for brittney griner. the pro basketball player from texas who's been detained for more than 100 days in russia. a special guest gave a firsthand account of his time in a russian prison and explained why he's so concerned about griner. this morning, former american hostage trevor reed is demanding action for brittney griner, the wnba star detained in russia. at a rally in houston for griner's release, reed describing the conditions he faced while spending years in a russian prison. >> they live in a cell that looks like it's something out of the middle ages. it's really medieval. the food there is medieval as well. you know, you're given fish. sometimes the fish is rotten. the cabbage is always rotten.

>> reporter: reed showed support for other americans held in russia including fellow marine paul whelan, but he expressed particular concern for griner. >> a government that systemically discriminates against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual people under vladimir putin, and those things obviously are going to make brittney's time there a lot more difficult. >> reporter: the state department has classified griner as wrongfully detained. russian authorities arrested her at the moscow airport in february for allegedly carrying vape cartridges with cannabis oil through security. on may 13th a russian court extended griner's pretrial detention by one month. >> every day that you're in prison there is like you're waking up into a nightmare. >> reporter: reed was released from russian detention in april. negotiations for his prisoner swap began before russia's war in ukraine. in an exclusive interview griner's wife told abc's robin roberts she wants president biden to intervene and bring griner back. >> if they're holding her because they want you to do

something, then i want you to do it. >> griner faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. the state department calls her release a top priority. another russian general has reportedly been killed in eastern ukraine. the ukrainians claim at least 12 russian military leaders have now died in the war. the battle is intensifying for one city that could be crucial for vladimir putin's goal of taking over the eastern donbas region. the u.s. has moved to seize two planes from a russian oligarch who violated sanctions. one is a gulf stream, and the other is a $350 million boeing jet. president biden is getting snubbed by mexico as he hosts the summit of the americas in los angeles this week. biden is expected to seek a deal aimed at stemming the flow of migration throughout the region, but it's being overshadowed by mexican president lopez obrador's decision to skip the event because the u.s. is not inviting the leaders of cuba, nicaragua, venezuela calling them dictators.

as the western u.s. faces historic drought, a new study finds colorado could look a lot more like arizona by the end of the century. federal scientists say the state will lose 50% to 60% of its snowpack by the year 2080. they say the large losses of snow will transform high elevation areas causing more concern about water shortages. >> and with that let's take a look at your tuesday weather. cameras captured this waterspout forming near pensacola, florida, yesterday. the area was under a tornado warning at the time. no damage was reported from the storms. on the radar heavy rain is expected in the ohio valley and severe storms are possible today from nebraska to kansas and missouri. checking today's high temperatures, 70s and 80s in the northeast. 90s in texas where record highs are possible. triple digits in phoenix. 77 in los angeles, but parts of california will hit 100 today.

nights alone in the remote wilderness of montana. riker webb was reported missing after playing with the family's dog in his yard. rescuers found him on sunday just a few mile from where he disappeared. he was hungry and cold but is okay. we turn to the growing debate over a four-day workweek. a new experiment. the first of its kind is now underway. >> reporter: this morning, a four-day workweek sounds like a dream come true. it is now a reality for thousands of people in the u.k. >> it's good, obviously, for employees who get more time back to spend with their families, professional development. >> reporter: a six-month trial period organized in part by a nonprofit. has kicked off for british employees at 70 companies with no loss of pay. >> when you're back to work, you're more efficient in your job. you're more effective and motivated. >> reporter: they'll be paid 100% of their salaries for 80%

of the previous work schedule. but they've commit to maintaining the same productivity, meaning doing the same work in less time. >> it turns out that in virtually every industry, it is possible now to do five days words of work in four, without stressing people out. >> reporter: advocates say it could bridge the game between remote work advocates and companies pushing to bring employees back to the office full time. >> i'm optimistic even as we return or we can return to something like normal, that we will be able to continue to experiment to build upon the best parts of the experiments of the pandemic. >> some countries have already documented a four-day workweek. companies in japan and iceland are seeing success. but it's been slow to catch on in the u.s. >> some opponents say that it could destabilize the economy, putting undue pressure on businesses. especially those with slim margins. what would you say to those

back now with more on our day long series, "guns in america." every abc news program and platform today is showcasing new reporting and analysis on the issue of gun safety. this morning a closer look at the state that did take action and it's a state with republican leadership. as lawmakers work to find solutions to this nation's plague of mass shootings, could florida be the hope for compromise? >> what kind of country are we if we can't make a promise to parents that when they drop their kids off at school, they get to pick them up alive? >> reporter: a series of mass in 2016, 49 people were slaughtered at pulse nightclub in orlando. a year later a gunman murdered five random strangers at a ft. lauderdale's airport. then in 2018 a teenager opened fire at marjory stoneman douglas

high school in parkland killing 17. it was then when students, survivors and many people across the state decided, enough was enough. >> our voice arelo. oue are cle and our eporter: in the days after the parkland massacre, floridians marched to the state legislature in tallahassee. they came with a message and left with a law. the marjory stoneman douglas school safety act. the law raised the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21 and established a three-day waiting period and gave law enforcement the authority to seize weapons from people experiencing a mental health crisis and put a school safety officer on every public campus while arming some teachers. >> the law s working and i think it's a model for the country. >> reporter: while many critics argue it doesn't go far enough and doesn't ban assault-style weapons, how in a statehouse and senate dominated by republicans with a republican governor did the most comprehensive gun legislation in florida's history pass in 018? democrat representative jared moscowitz who helped craft the

law explains. >> quite frankly, it took people to politically disarm. democrats realizing we're not going to get everything we want because here in florida the legislature is controlled complete by by republicans. >> reporter: but can something like the stoneman douglas law be established in washington? columbia law professor jeffrey fagan. >> i think eventually they will bridge despite some concerns of republican legislators. the closest we get to that core of measures most likely to have an impact on gun violence and gun deaths, the more difficult it will be to reach consensus. >> reporter: republican rick scott who signed the msd bill into law in 2018 as then florida governor is now a u.s. senator yet again tasked with addressing gun violence, only this time the nation is watching and waiting for something to get done. >> i think we ought to do common sense things that we know we can get done. >> what struck me as truly remarkable back when this happened, it was parents,
