at him as they went. the person who was shot it's expected to survive in the two suspects got away. one parent whose child was inside the library hop on the phone and instructed his son on how to find a safe place to escape the danger, a lesson he picked up during active shooter training. > my son said he is safe and he and his friend they went into a room and they hide, and i told him to lock the door because it did not have a lock on the inside so i told him to put it in front of a chair in front of the door and just and pocketed. >> they say the shooting appears to be gang related. karina: it is election day in california. one of the key races we are watching in san francisco where voters would decide whether to recall the district attorney. we bring our coverage to the abc7news reporter who is life at the watch party headquarters. >> yes. we are live at the restaurant

near the chase center. we are three hours out until his watch party will open its doors to the press. he remains confident today despite his own polls showing he is losing by at least 10 points. o end as incarceration. he is seen nationally as a pivotal figure in the criminal justice reform movement. as property crime has gone up and san francisco the past year, he has been criticized for not holding criminals accountable. it is scenes like these that have fueled the recall debate, brazen thefts, people shoplifting seemingly without consequences. he said the brutal attacks against asian-american seniors come up but he has remained headstrong defending his record and says the rise in property crime is due to economic impacts from the pandemic and also blames the san francisco police

department for not making enough arrests. his supporters argue this recall is being fueled by right-wing republicans and has his critics that he is not fit for the job. >> he is failing to do his job and failing to keep us safe, failing to manage the das office, and we need new leadership in san francisco in that office. >> it was dishonest about the recall in the millions of dollars in lies and attacks. they are suggesting all the changes in the last two years or because of my election. >> his recall marks the second m office in the history of san the first was in 1917, and he survived easily. political experts say it will be a tough road moving forward, given that he won by slim margins in 2019, and with voter turnout low this year across the

state, so far, 20% of mail-in ballots have been returned here in san francisco. karina: thank you. we will check with you later this evening. today, candidates are heading to the voting poll on the last day of the california primary elections. a san jose mayoral candidate voted alongside her husband and son at the roosevelt community center in san jose. she is currently the santa clara county supervisor and binds to tackle issues surrounding affordable housing, crime, and homelessness. >> what i want to tell people as is that the only way we will get through this is to deal with all that is facing us is that we have to get one of those things and that is a lot of people why they voted for me. >> she plans to watch the results at the san jose women's club. if elected mayor, she will be the third woman to become the mayor in san jose the last moment to become mayor was in 1991. dan: there are statewide races

we are watching closely, and our news anchor is tracking those, along with potentially record low turnout. >> we will be tracking the results all night, big board. there are several statewide races people are voting on today including the governor's race, governor gavin newsom running for election and while he is expected to win after defeating the recall last year, the big question is who will place second, meaning who will he run against in the midterms, paul and joseph will likely be brian dolly, the republican party's endorsed candidate, that is who governor newsom feels he has a stronger stance against, but there is also speculation around a bay area author who wrote why progressives ruined cities. he is running as a no party preference candidate hoping to tap in some democratic voters who may be disenfranchised from their own party right now. in fact, that is something we

are also seeing in the attorney general race where there is also a new party preference candidate hoping to move on to the general election to run against the current democratic appointed candidate. that is the sacramento county district attorney who is running as an independent, and there are twoace, r former federal prosecutor, who did legal counsl for the unsuccessful effort to llcare nso a handful there are l districts because of the redistricting we had in handful of those are competitive, and then we have a big mayors race in los angeles, with the developer ric caruso running against a field of democrats. i think the one that the berkeley poll said was in the lead was karen bass. >> despite these races, it appears there could be record low turnout the selection.

to be sold in a deal worth $8 billion. the chain has confirmed that it is an exclusive takeover with the owner of vitamin shoppe for $60 a share. the parent company is the franchise group and it needs to complete the financing and due diligence requirements before signing off on the deal. target is canceling orders from its suppliers and cutting the price of goods on its shelves to make way for the fall and holiday shopping seasons. you would likely find some great deals in its home goods and clothing departments. why? americans have shifted from investments in their homes to travel, dining out, and dressier clothing. the change has come much faster than major retailers expected. goodyear is recalling more than 173 thousand recreational vehicle tires that can fail. the u.s. government says those tires have killed or injured

and digging trenches in santa rosa, putting powerlines underground to reduce wildfire risks. >> we are doing everything we can to stop wildfires. putting it underground is a big part of that, cutting ignition risks 99 present. >> the utility has the goal of doing it for 10,000 miles a powerlines, 175 miles this year, 43 in the bay area. the project is not cheap. customers will foot part of the bill. >> it is $3.5 million per mile. >> this work happening in the footprint of the 2017 fire that destroyed thousands of homes and killed 22 people. pg&e equipment was not responsible for sparking it, but it's lines have been blamed for sparking other deadly wildfires. >> we have had too many incidents of powerlines responsible for major disasters. >> she heads after the fire usa,

karina: spencer and michael are joining us now. it is election day in california. voter turnout remains to be seen, since every registered voter in the state was supposed to get a male-in ballot. there are some races we are watching, the recall of san francisco's district attorney, and hotly contested sheriff and district attorney races. a lot we will be covering tonight. we will have a show and you were hosted at 8:30 with election results. pretty big day. dan: big day.

the registration numbers are not bad. the turnout is dismal. not a surprise in an off-your election, although there are important races to be watched. it's nothing like a presidential election. >> the great turnout for the recall election. >> yeah. >> it is disappointing to see look turnout numbers. >> especially because they tried to make it easy for everyone. just fill it out, drop it off, and you don't have to go anywhere to vote. what do you think about today's election turnout? >> it was interesting. i mailed mine in. i walked by the polling place to see what was going on, and there was nobody in there. that is depressing. you assume a few people would want to do that. it's not looking good. this is an amazing election. on the democratic side, you're

looking at how progressive they will be. this is a major election. >> i don't think it is fully recognized by a lot of people. >> it is unfortunate that so many young people are not voting and they're saying the number of people 65 and older, they are out there and casting their votes, but it is the 18-year-olds to 34-year-old's not participating in his primary. dan: there will be great turnout for the finals right here on abc 7. the warriors will see if they can extend their record. they have won at least one road game in 26 playoff series. we looked at the odds in game three. the celtics are favored by 3.5 points. spencer, as we know, any given wednesday, right? >> right. at least one road game in boston. the celtics are a tough team. i love my warriors. they are up against an equally
