footprint of one of the worst fires we have had. community advocates say it is about time and it is the right thing to do to prevent future disasters. cornell barnard has the story. cornell: pg&e crews were cutting asphalt and digging trenches in santa rosa, putting power lines underground to reduce wildfire risk. >> we are doing everything we can to stop wildfires. under grounding is a big part of that. we note it cuts ignition risk by 99% because the ground -- the lines are underground. >> the city says it has a goal of under grounding 10,000 miles of power lines, 170 five miles this year, 43 in the bay area. >> it is expensive right now. it is about $3.5 million per mile. >> this work happening in the very footprint of the 2017 tubs

fire, which destroyed thousands of homes and killed two people. pg&e equipment was not responsible for sparking it, but it's lines have been blamed for sparking other deadly wildfires. >> we have had too many incidents of pg&e powerlines being responsible for major disasters. >> jennifer greg thompson has a nonprofit helping communities affected by wildfires. she says under grounding powerlines is the only option for high fire risk communities. >> i applaud pg&e for doing this. some people will say that this is well after the fact, but the way we view it, this is well before the fact for many communities that are currently at risk of burning down. >> the santa rosa fire department since the city of santa rosa has been on the receiving end of large and damaging wildfires. the efforts being made by pg&e to mitigate a threat for our communities is a step in the right direction. >> we are doing everything we can to not have our equipment sparked another fire.

dan: with hot temperatures coming this week, the question is -- how significant will be the fire danger? karina: here is meteorologist sandhya patel. sandia -- sandhya: high temperatures will be well above average. overnight, you will not get much cooling, so there's going to be a significant risk of heat illnesses. any time you have hot, dry weather, we are concerned about fire danger, even though recently we did get some rain. here's a look at the sampling of some of the high temperatures. in the triple digits, away from the coastline, the coast will be in the 60's and 70's. just some heat safety tips, drink plenty of water, stay in an ac room, out of the sun if you can, and if you work outside, you will want to take frequent breaks. don't ever leave people and pets inside vehicles. as you know, it gets much harder

inside a vehicle than it does outside, so definitely keep these tips in mind. i will let you know how long this intense heat is going to last. karina: thank you. several controlled burns were conducted across the state today including one in san mateo county near the dam at san andreas lake. >> we like to say we would much rather have good smoke now than bad smoke later. >> the dam helps provide water. this is probably the last prescribed burn of the season as the focus now turns to wildfire suppression. dan: san francisco's former first lady gina miss goni has died. governor newsom released a statement writing san francisco will long remember her as a charming, gracious first lady and trustee on the war memorial

board, a person who gave so much to the city she grew up in and love so much. gina was the widow of former san francisco mayor george he. she remained active in civic life after his assassination. details of the former first lady's death have not been released. karina: it is election day today. one of the biggest measures on the ballot this year is the recall of the san francisco district attorney. we are two hours out from the closing of the polls and the launch of the embattled d.a.'s watch party. stephanie sierra is live right now right near chase center. what can you tell us? how is the mood there now? stephanie: right now, it is pretty calm. the event does not open to the

press and public for a couple of hours, but we are keeping tabs on it. it is certainly a huge night, and it was not long ago when he made national headlines being one of the lead faces of the progressive prosecutor movement. now it is that same judicial philosophy that could cost him his job. his own polling showing him at least 10 points behind, so how did we get here? member, he is a former public defender whose parents were both imprisoned. never prosecuted a case before becoming the city's top prosecutor. he has often been criticized as being too soft on crime. his reform policies are backed by the city's progressive arm, which includes most of the board of supervisors. some supporters are concerned if the recall is successful, it could be a big step back for criminal justice reform. >> i fundamentally believe that

a progressive prosecutor is what is best for the criminal justice system, but we need one that will also take into account that we have problems with chronic offenders and that we have very violent offenders that must be held accountable. >> i'm responsible for fighting as hard as i can every single day to make the city safer. i'm proud of the work we have done and i know how much work we have ahead. >> political experts say it will be a tough road. he won in 2019 on very slim margins, and if polling is any indication, it is not looking a verbal, and if the recall were to be successful, it is important to note this would be the first successful da recall in san francisco history. we will, of course, be here tracking the results as they come in tonight. karina: thank you, stephanie. polls close at 8:00 p.m. today, so you have a couple of more hours to vote. every registered voter in california received a mail-in

you are seeing a mainly sunny sky here in san francisco. 60 degrees, oakland. the 70's from mountain view. to san jose, cool 59. the sun is being filtered by those higher clouds from our emeryville camera. napa, you are at 75. 80's around fairfield. really comfortable for concord and livermore. one other picture, san jose, shark tank, where it is a beautiful day. mild to warm tomorrow afternoon and we have intense summer-like heat coming thursday and friday, so hour-by-hour we go. tomorrow morning, we will still have fog around and higher clouds. this really is going to stick around through tomorrow afternoon and evening, so we don't have to worry about any intense heat tomorrow. it is after that we start to notice those numbers ratcheting up there is day. morning temperatures will be in the 50's and 60's, a really mild start to your morning. definitely watch out for some of that fog right along the coast.

for the afternoon, to 90 degrees in fairfield. 63 in half moon bay, so a summer-like spread as we would expect around this time. 80 in san rafael, 87 in santa rosa. here's a look at the accuweather 7-day forecast. morning fog gives way to a warm day inland. much warmer. those temperatures continue to go up on friday. this is going to be the hottest day with mid 100's and lynn. if you are particularly sensitive to heat, you will want to keep this in mind and make plans to stay cool because the heat will increase significantly your risk of illnesses, at least the potential, especially if you are inland, as temperatures soar a good 15 to 25 degrees above average. the coast will be in the 70's. notice temperatures are coming down and then much cooler, back to where you should be for this time of year sunday with upper

karina: caring for our environment is part of building a better bay area. abc 7 news weather anchor spencer christian has a look. spencer: months in the air can still reveal secrets on the ground including the remnants of ancient waterways hidden for thousands of years, a discovery that could hold the key to recharging the state's depleted groundwater. catherine is overseeing the high-tech survey. >> what we are looking for is a connection hour recharge pathway between the surface of the earth and the aquifer itself. spencer: to help find those channels, helicopters deploying spaceship-sized antennae ping the ground, mapping their geology deep low the surface.

the technique was piloted in california. >> what we want to do with that is to interpret those images in terms of the sediment types that are present or the rock types that are present. spencer: the work helped produce 3d maps locating porous material that allows water to flow deep into the aquifer marked here in red, but while the flights are locating potential recharge locations up and down the state, a specific type of site could turn out to be the most intriguing. cannot recognize the sites with the naked eye because they were created thousands of years ago by powerful glaciers in the sierra, carving out what are now being called paleo valleys. >> these were ancient rivers that came down off of the sierra. spencer: this environmental writer describes the valleys in her new book, water always wins. >> they can be a mile wide and 100 feet deep. spencer: she says the glacial runoff carved out deep canyon-like rivers, but when

they began to melt weeks later, flows began to carve out gravel-like material. graham fog and his then graduate student gary wiseman predicted that her existence in the 1990's. then in a painstaking process, they used well drilling samples to help locate the first documented paleo valley near fresno. >> these paleo valleys are big, fat avenues just sitting there. spencer: researchers believe there may be more than a dozen running through central valley. >> we went to the area where graham had identified one of these deposits. we laid out closely spaced flight lines and flew over the area. pretty exciting.

spencer: with climate change that thing to disrupt the normal snowfall, exploding the paleo valleys to capture the boom and bust runoff could be critical. rather than trying to build new aboveground reservoirs, the vertical percentage of the floodwaters could benefit the channels. researchers from the california department of water resources are busy studying the data for electromagnetic surveys. they believe the water could be used for resource ponds hour could sibley be protected for development. >> we are really trying to look at how do we best utilize our natural infrastructure. >> vast underground reservoirs that could soon become reachable through ancient pathways. karina: experts say california's aquifers can hold more water moving forward than all of our

republican state senator brian donnelly. that is who newsom feels he has the strongest chance against, but there's also speculation around a bay area author, who wrote "san francisco -- "san fran sicko: why some bay area voters feel disenfranchised." the sacramento district attorney is running as an independent, and there's also two republicans running in the ag race, a former federal prosecutor and a private attorney who did legal counsel for the unsuccessful effort to recall newsom. there's also a handful of other important races across the state today. >> there are new congressional

districts because of the redistricting we just had, and then we have a big prayers -- a big mayor's race in los angeles with developer caruso running against a field of democrats. i think one berkeley poll came out and said bass was in the lead there. >> despite these bases, it appears there could be record low turnout. before today, only about 13% of registered voters had turned in early ballots. analysts say it is likely overall turnout could be less than a quarter, maybe a quarter of all registered voters. by comparison, turnout for the recall of governor newsom last year was more than 50%. again, we will be tracking all these races tonight on our big board. dan: thanks a lot. liz and i will be livestreaming election results starting at 8:30 p.m. on the abc 7 bay area app anywhere you stream. any time you want local

information, we put it all on one page. get voter guides now and election results tonight. karina: the suspects involved in the kidnapping of baby brandon were in court today. they pleaded not guilty for kidnapping of the three month old baby in san jose in april. evidence showed they had attempted to take baby brandon multiple times before the actual kidnapping. the preliminary hearing is set to begin next week. san jose communities have been rocked by two shootings in less than a week, both taking place in public places. considered safe. a tragic shooting ended in the death of a safeway employee over the weekend, and a shooting yesterday in a library with children present. no kids were hurt, just scared. experts are weighing in on what scales you should -- what skills you should hone to go on with daily life. >> if i had to leave very quickly, how what i do that?
