thanks for joining us. tonight, the dramatic never before seen video and testimony from former president trump's inner circle. it came during the high-stakes first primetime hearing of the january 6th committee after a 14-month-long investigation. here's abc's chief washington correspondent jonathan karl. >> reporter: after more than 14 months of investigation into the capitol insurrection -- >> trump is only asking for two things. he ask ed me for my vote, and h asked me to come on january 6th. >> reporter: more than 100,000 witnesses interviewed behind closed doors and thousands of hours of video -- >> i told the president i was [ bleep ]. and, you know, i didn't want to be a part of it. >> reporter: and 100,000 documents obtained. the house committee investigating january 6th is making its case in primetime. >> over multiple months, donald trump oversaw and coordinated a

sophisticated seven-part plan to overturn the presidential election and prevent the chance for a presidential power. >> reporter: the committee playing a 12-minute-long, highly produced video, replaying a graphic timeline of the day. >> i am not allowed to say what's going to happen today. because everyone's just going to have to watch. >> reporter: showing the rush to the capitol. violent confrontations with overwhelmed law enforcement. the voices of those officers played as americans watched. >> we need to hold the doors of the capitol! >> the capitol police started moving reinforcements inside. >> doors barricaded, people in the halls outside, we have no way out. >> reporter: much of the evidence presented, never before seen by the public, including videotaped excerpts from testimony given by president

trump's own family. >> i respect attorney general barr. so i accepted what he was saying. >> i kind of took it up to just be whining, to be honest with you. >> reporter: the committee laying out a roadmap for americans of what happened, not just on that day, but in the weeks and months leading up to it. committee chairman bennie thompson began by setting the table for what will be a month of hearings. >> january 6th was the culmination of an attempted coup. a brazen attempt, as one rioter put it shortly after january 6th, to overthrow the government. the violence was no accident. it represents trump's last stand, most desperate chance to halt the transfer of power. >> reporter: fielding republican liz cheney to lay out the case against trump. she is one of two republicans on the committee.

both have been ostracized by their party because of criticism of president trump. >> president trump summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. >> reporter: she punctuated her arguments by playing video clips from depositions of those in then-president trump's inner circle. here's former attorney general bill barr on trump's false claims of election fraud. >> repeatedly told the president in no uncertain terms that i did not see evidence of fraud. and -- you know, that would have affected the outcome of the election. >> reporter: cheney then played the reaction of the president's daughter and senior white house adviser, ivanka trump, when barr found no evidence of fraud. >> how did that affect your perspective of the election, when attorney general barr made that statement? >> it affected my perspective. i respect attorney general barr. so i accepted what he was

saying. >> she was as direct as you can be in saying that the attorney general's word meant a lot for her, and the attorney general's word, a pretty striking one, calling it b.s. >> reporter: cheney also played a clip of jared kushner's deposition. kushner was asked about members of trump's white house counsel's team threatening to resign in the aftermath of the capitol attack. >> jared, are you aware of instances where pat siblone threatened to resign? >> my interest at that time was trying to get as many pardons done, and i know that he was always -- him and the team were always saying, oh, we're going to resign, we're not going to be here if this happens, if that happens. i kind of took it up to just be whining, to be honest with you. >> whining? there's a reason why people serving in our government take an oath to the constitution. t ni colleagues. you are defending the indefensible. there will be come a day w,nhe

>> all we want is pelosi! >> reporter: to this video shot just minutes after speaker pelosi was rushed out to safety. >> nancy! nancy! nancy! >> upon anyone that really didn't think that there was extreme violence on that day? i filmed it, i saw it, i was subject to it. the violence was real, and it was exceptionally powerful. >> you can't watch and think it was just another visit? tourist visit of the capitol? >> no. when you see two people die on one day, it's not normal political discourse. >> reporter: quested himself was assaulted. a rioter seen trying to smash his camera. what is your sense from having spent so much time in the middle of that crowd? if trump had come out and, in a very public and high-profile way, said stop, would they have stopped? >> i believe he had enormous power over that crowd. i think that there's a high probability that things would have been a lot calmer if he'd

"cool, i always wanted a brother." three years on testosterone. >> that was the physical change. what was the emotional change? >> the biggest thing emotionally for me was self-love and the confidence. i have a self-love that i never

could have imagined. >> when i say trans joy, what comes to mind? >> i was in alabama with my family. we were at a dinner table ordering food. the lady was going around. then looked at me, "and you, sir?" and i was like, ha ha ha! it was a huge step of just ewe effective yeah. they just called me sir! >> that's awesome. >> reporter: but raising visibility for trans men also at times makes aidan a target. >> i've had death threats. people who, in detail, told me if they had the opportunity, that they would murder me and how they would do it. >> what do you think that trans phobia, that trans hate, is? >> people are afraid what was they don't understand. people are afraid ofdiffer nad o d meagsaying, hey, you, dn't commist a obout not committing suicide is worth 300 comments of hate. >> reporter: so he fights on, knowing he stands on the shoulders of other trans activists from marginalized

groups within the lgbtq movement. trans women of color like diamond stiles. >> i am executive director of black trans women's, inc. we work around homelessness, anti-violence. 40% of homeless youth was lgbt. it was a trans woman that got murdered. firsthand, i definitely know it can lead to sex work, drugs. it can lead do you living with people that are unsafe. >> reporter: diamond was assigned male at birth, but began identifying as female when she was 13. >> were you diamond stiles in high school? >> yes. i was living in a group home. i had a little bit more freedom. nobody really said anything. they just let me be who i was. >> until the day they said, you can't wear a gown to prom? >> the audacity of it fueled me. my english teacher slid me a piece of paper with the aclu's number on it. they took my case pro bono. >> i have my rights. i have the right to do what i want to do.

>> and you won? >> i won. they were telling me, this is in conservative indiana, you're going to lose. i didn't lose. i won. it sparked something in me that led to who i am today. >> reporter: but for decades, victories were elusive. diamond dropped out of college to help support a younger brother when her mom went to jail. facing harassment in the workplace. one boss, she says, firing her without cause. >> he says it's easier for me to get rid of you than for me to get rid of six people and find new people. logically, that makes sense. but is it fair? no. >> so when you are fired from three different jobs, survival sex work? >> that's really all that's left. sex work was the survival tool, not what i wanted. >> reporter: diamond went on to earn a college degree. at 41, she hosts a popular weekly podcast. >> welcome to marcia's plate, a black trans inclusive feminist podcast. >> i heard that you called marcia's plate after marcia p.
