the committee chairman revealed new information about the alleged link between two militia groups and people in president trump's orbit. >> faith abubey begins our coverage from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. the committee directly blamed former president trump saying that he lit the flame for the attack on the u.s. capitol. its first primetime hearing, the house committee investigating the january 6th capitol attack described the riot as former president trump's last stand. >> january 6th was the culmination of an attempted coup. >> reporter: committee members say their year long investigation found trump energized groups like the proud boys and oathkeepers. >> over multiple months donald trump oversaw and coordinated a sophisticated seven-part plan to overturn the presidential election and prevent the chance for a presidential power. >> reporter: congressman liz cheney saying one moment weeks before the riot was pivotal. on december 18th she says met

with former national security adviser michael flynn, attorney sidney powell and advi tt nt it was directly caused by donald trump's actions in the weeks and months before january 6th. that is what this committee is trying to establish. >> reporter: cheney also confirmed previous reports that as members of the mob yelled "hang mike pence," trump was privately endorsing the crowd's chants. >> the president responded with this sentiment, quote, maybe our supporters have the right idea. mike pence, quote, deserves it. >> reporter: and cheney says multiple republican members of congress asked trump for presidential pardons after the riot. >> breach the line.

who continue in many ways to excuse the behaviors and the actions and were involved in the plot to try to overturn the results of the election. you saw congresswoman cheney calling out those members of congress and using the words of and close associates to try to make the case that they knew exactly what was going on. they know that the election was lost and yet they worked to foment the rebellion against the institution of congress anyway. all in all, a first salvo that tells you about a committee that has done an extensive and exhaustive amount of research and is only now beginning to share that with the public that's still beginning -- still comprehending what happened last january 6th. rick klein, abc news, washington. >> our thanks there to rick. the next committee hearing is monday at 10:00 a.m. abc news will bring you live coverage. police in maryland have yet to explain a motive for a deadly workplace shooting. authorities say the gunman opened fire at this manufacturing plant 75 miles west of baltimore killing three

co-workers and injuring a fourth person. the suspect was taken into custody after being injured in a shootout with a state trooper. new overnight the school police chief in uvalde, texas, is breaking his silenc what took officers so long to enter robb elementary school as. revealing his struggle to open the door and explaining why he didn't have his police radio with him. this morning, the uvalde school district police chief is defending the department's response to the school massacre that left 19 children dead. chief pete arredondo telling "the texas tribune," not a single responding officer ever hesitated to put themselves at risk to save the children. the response coming after the or allegedly ordering officers not to breach the classroom. sahaton saying, i didn't issue any orders. i called for assistance and asked for an extraction tool to open the door. according to "the new york

tactical gear. when handed a key ring he says none of them opened the door. arredondo saying, i was praying one of them was going to open up the door each time i tried a key. arredondo says he didn't speak out earlier because he didn't want to add to the town's grief. turning to the economy, new evidence of the sticker shock americans are experiencing at the grocery store. a new survey shows grocery prices rose last month at a record pace up nearly 12% from a year ago. one factor, the record high price of diesel used by the trucking industry. truckers are quitting in record numbers because of the surging cost of fuel. meanwhile, regular gas is now averaging $5 a gallon nationwide. this morning the government is releasing its monthly report on overall inflation. russia is threatening a direct military clash with the west after a cyberattack targeting the kremlin. moscow says a government website was hacked to reveal a message supporting ukraine. meanwhile, the ukrainians are appealing for more weapons as russian forces gain ground in

emergency crews swarmed the m&m factory in central pennsylvania after two workers fell into a vat of chocolate. dispatchers reported the employees were waist high in chocolate, though it's unclear if it was dry or liquid. first responders eventually rescued them and brought them to the hospital as a precaution. we turn now to a family reunited four decades after a brutal crime. a child known as baby holly has been found 42 years after she was reported missing. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning the missing baby of a couple found murdered four decades ago has been found alive. >> i'm excited to announce that baby holly has been located

alive and well 42 years later. >> reporter: the stunning announcement made in texas where tina gail and harold dean clouse were found dead in a wooded area back in 1981. but the couple's baby daughter, holly, was nowhere to be found. at the time police could not identify the couple, who had just moved to the houston area from florida. but last year through genetic genealogy authorities identified the remains and notified their families. and now, months later, they've nowlly tracked down baby s's b. oklama her gran callin get the news tuesday. >> that night i slept all night. first time in 42 years. >> we had nightmares, you know, almost every night wondering what happened to holly. >> reporter: authorities say sometime after holly's parents were murdered she was left at a church in arizona by two women
