key states. >> what was mr. meadows' reaction to that? >> i believe the words he used were so there's no there there. >> reporter: chairman bennie thompson said trump made one last stand calling his supporters to washington. >> january 6th was the culmination of an attempted coup. >> reporter: playing video of charged rioters. >> he personally asked for us to come to d.c. that day. >> i know why i was there. that's because he called me there. >> reporter: when the mob chanted to hang his own vice president republican congresswoman liz cheney said one witness tells the committee trump agreed. >> aware of the rioters chanting hang mike pence, the president responded with this sentiment, quote, maybe our supporters have the right idea. mike pence, quote, deserves it. >> reporter: cheney delivering this warning to fellow republicans. >> i say this to my republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible. there will come a day when donald trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.

>> reporter: cheney says that multiple republicans including congressman scott perry asked trump for a presidential pardon for their efforts to try and overturn the 2020 election. perry's office is denying that claim this morning calling it ludicrous. as for the former president he released a statement blasting the hearing and the committee still pushing false claims about an election he lost, guys. >> all right, rachel, thanks so much. we're going to bring in our chief washington correspondent jon karl and our chief legal analyst dan abrams for more. jon, we'll start with you. this was an 11-month investigation, so much buildup to this hearing. what struck you the most? >> reporter: there was significant new material, amy, but i think the most important thing is the way the committee tied the horror of that day to donald trump and perhaps the single most important moment for me that struck out when you saw one of the rioters in footage we've never seen before, reading

donald trump's tweet through a bull horn, the one where he said mike pence didn't have the courage and you see how that reading of the tweet led directly to the rioters chanting "hang mike pence" and going in search of mike pence. you hear the testimony -- or the summary of the testimony that donald trump was heard in the white house saying that the rioters had the right idea and that pence deserved it. really powerful. i'd say one other thing, liz cheney, liz cheney did this calmly, without vitriol, without excess emotion, this is her moment. she has treated this like the cause of her life and she has issued a challenge to republicans, when she went out and said that there will come a day when donald trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain. that was her message to republicans defending what she called the indefensible. >> dan, let's bring you in on this. we heard words like attempted coup, conspiracy, coordination. you pointed out before this is not a legal proceeding.

but the committee did lay out references to possible crimes including what a judge said about trump's actions. how does that factor into all of this? >> particularly liz cheney is trying to link the proud boys and the oath keepers with donald trump because they have been charged and saw that they have said they were inspired by donald trump. but this is what i'm going to be watching for moving forward is particularly it sounds like it will be on day six, the questions are going to be, can they link donald trump directly to the oath keepers and the proud boys? is there someone in his inner circle who was working with them? the committee has suggested that they may have evidence with that regard. that's going to be from a legal perspective a critical question. >> and we heard what jon said struck him as powerful. what moment struck you as powerful? >> it was the use of the people around donald trump, it was the bill barrs, the ivanka trump, it was talking about the white house counsel, et cetera, because then you don't have to listen to the words of the

members of congress themselves and i think that some of the opening statements were too long. i think that they lost some people there. i think they brought them back when they had the evidence, when they had the accounts from donald trump's inner circle. >> dan abrams, jon karl, we want to thank you both. we will hear from the lead witness at last night's hearing, filmmaker nick quested whose footage and testimony were at the center of it all. that is coming up in our next hour. in the meantime, though, we turn to the surging pain at the pump. gas prices getting closer to a national average of $5 a gallon and with prices this high theft of gas is also on the rise. matt gutman is at a gas station in los angeles with more on that. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, amy. that sign bemind me, that's not a mistake, $6.68 a gallon here in los angeles. that's pretty common. you mentioned the nation creeping toward that $5 mark.

aaa putting it at $4.98. that's nearly $2 more than it was this time last year and with the summer driving season set to begin, experts are saying that demand for fuel is going to rise which means the price for fuel is going to rise. wall street firm predicts $6 gas this summer and thieves are converting these trucks into these makeshift gas tankers rolling up to pumps like this, stealing the gas and then selling it on the black market, we're told that gas prices will hopefully stabilize toward fall, but if you're feeling bad about us, in norway gas is nearly $6 a gallon. >> wow, okay. all right, matt. thank you. we'll take it. of course, the high price of gas is a major factor in the rising inflation americans are now feeling. new numbers set to be released this morning, chief economics correspondent rebecca jarvis is on wall street with what we can expect. rebecca, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, whit. inflation got hotter, in the month of may, prices up 8.6% from a year ago, that's a post-pandemic high, a new record and it's really hitting americans across the board. from gas to groceries, to shelter. in real terms the average american family is now spending $341 more every month to buy the same things they bought a year ago, food prices, groceries are u 11.9% from a year ago, the highest level we've seen since 1979 and rents are also up 26.5% higher for a one-bedroom apartment according to rent.com from a year ago the average nationwide to rent a one-bedroom apartment, $751 a month. the real focus here on wall street, we know it's painful for american families does it put us

on the path to recession? that's a real concern on wall street. >> i know we all hope we don't go there. thank you so much. rebecca. now to new evidence in the uvalde school massacre. fourth grade teacher eva mireles will be laid to rest this morning. this as state investigators are now saying police delayed going into the classroom because they were waiting for protective gear to arrive. mireya villarreal has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, uvalde school's police chief pete arredondo defending police actions during the horrific mass shooting at robb elementary school in an interview with "the texas tribune" saying the only thing that was important to me at this time was to save as many teachers and children as possible adding, not a single responding officer ever hesitated even for a moment to put themselves at risk to save the children. arredondo says he ran straight inside the school without body armor leaving his radio behind claiming it would slow him down and began searching rooms before coming up to the room the shooter was in.

without breaching equipment, he says they tried dozens of keys before finding the correct one. without his radio he says he was unaware of the 911 calls coming from students inside the classroom and nobody relayed the information to him. but this morning, more details emerging about police response. >> there's anybody inside of the building? the child is advising he's in the room full of victims. >> reporter: sources telling abc news in a preliminary assessment, state investigators believe that police officers delayed entry into the school as the shooting occurred because they were waiting for protective gear. it's a move that contradicts active shooter protocols that have been adopted by law enforcement agencies across the country. "the new york times" also reporting that chief arredondo was one of the first officers to enter the school. according to "the times," more than a dozen of the 33 children and 3 teachers originally in the two classrooms remained alive during the 1 hour and 17 minutes

from when the shooting began to when officers officially entered. an official telling abc news arredondo was overheard that day saying, people are going to ask why we're taking so long. we've continued to ask if chief arredondo is on leave or if he is still working for the school district, but school district officials are refusing to answer that question right now. back here in austin, where we are, there is a state congressional committee that is continuing to review what happened in uvalde. they'll hear from more witnesses and have more testimony and evidence presented to them early next weekend. we will continue to follow this story. guys. >> we know you will, mireya, thank you so much for that. we're going to turn now to the war in ukraine. president zelenskyy sounding the alarm over the battle for control of a key city. foreign correspondent james longman is in kyiv with the very latest for us. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, amy. ukrainian officials are warning their forces are being seriously

outgunned by russia. the military has told abc news this morning that the country now relies almost exclusively on western ammunition. this is now a war fought mainly with high-powered heavy artillery and they are running out of it. it's thought ukraine has just one artillery piece per russia's 10 to 15 and president zelenskyy is also admitting ukraine is losing something like 100 soldiers a day and that 500 more are getting injured so for ukraine the fight in the east is looking very bleak indeed and russia is also blaming the west for cyberattacks against its infrastructure. an internet search for russian government housing website led to a glory to ukraine sign in ukrainian with a ukrainian flag so the foreign ministry is saying this greatly increases the threat of a direct military clash with what it calls unpredictable circumstances. guys? >> james longman for us, thank you. we turn to the nba finals. game four is happening tonight. steph curry is down but not out after getting hurt late in game three. will reeve spoke to the golden state superstar and joins us from boston. will, looks like he's going to play. >> reporter: it does, whit.

hour, we're speaking to the lead witness, the filmmaker whose never before seen footage was at the center of that. officials say an employee opened fire on co-workers before getting into a shootout with a state trooper. the suspect identified as a 23-year-old west virginia man was injured and taken into custody. the state trooper suffered minor injuries. for the second time this week, a military aircraft has crashed in california. the navy confirming seahawk went down during a training flight. all four people on board surviving the crash. one sustained a nonlife-threatening injury. the other three unhurt. the incident happened near the site where an osprey aircraft crashed on wednesday killing five marines. and finally, the startling emergency at the m&m factory in central pennsylvania when two employees fell into a chocolate tank and couldn't get out.

of relief in a long-awaited reunion. >> we had nightmares almost every night wondering what happened to holly. >> reporter: it is a question debbie brooks, holly's aunt, and donna, holly's grandmother have been asking for decades. >> all kinds of things go through your mind but you're never at rest. >> reporter: this morning, after 40 years of searching, they can finally rest a bit easier were the answer. >> they called us and said they found holly. that night i was able to go to bed. >> reporter: family members hadn't seen holly nor her parents, dean and tina linn clouse, since 1980, found beaten and strangled to death found in a wooded area near houston, but they weren't positively identified until 2021 through the work of forensic genealogy and baby holly's whereabouts were also a mystery until now. investigators finding holly this week in oklahoma. telling her the truth about her biological parents, she's seen

her are not considered suspects but the criminal investigation still under way. authorities asking the public for help. guys. >> wow, 40 years later but they got that reunion. all right, marcus, thank you. we do want to turn now to murder charges for that michigan police officer who shot and killed the black driver during a traffic stop back in april. the incident sparking protests over police use of force. alex perez is in grand rapids, michigan, with more. alex, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, whit. these charges come after two months of investigation into the incidents. so christopher schurr has been charged with second degree murder for the death of 26-year-old patrick lyoya. the ordeal unfolding back on april 4th. schurr had pulled him over because his plates were matched to a different car, a chase and struggle ensued. schurr fires his gun as lyoya is looking away striking him in the back of the head. now lyoya's family says they are determined to see the officer behind bars. if convicted schurr could face life in prison.

starting to get out of control? >> well, we started -- it was very difficult for us to actually understand when things got out of control until the barriers came down. it was very similar to proud boy rallies that we had filmed beforehand. there was marching down the mall and then we walked past the capitol building. you know, we walked towards the supreme court which we can see from where we are standing here. so it was really when the barriers came down that the game changed and it really felt like a rubicon had been crossed at that point and also the language changed, you know, the language before was more directed towards where's antifa and then after the barriers came down the language seemed to be directed towards challenging the police, whereas they were challenging them to choose a side or respect their oaths so the rubicon was those barriers. >> i imagine you saw so many unthinkable things that day. does anything stand out in particular? >> i mean, it was just the

amount of people and just the length of it. it was -- we saw so many things that were so troubling but it just was -- there was -- it felt like there were 60,000 people pouring on to the steps of the capitol like water. >> were you ever concerned for your own personal safety? for you and your crew. >> i had no spatial -- i had no awareness of where my crew was so i couldn't really worry for them. i mean, i had my camera broken and we got -- we were -- as in the crowd the crowd was gassed. there were pepper balls all over the place. the bike racks were flying around. there was a huge flag that was pushed on top of the police from the crowd. it wasn't really i was worried for my safety because i'm very much in the moment just trying to document the event. >> i understand a rioter went after you at one point. can you tell me what happened? >> yeah, i was filming on the

lower plaza and actually i had my back turned to him and he pulled my cameras as if he was trying to strip the basketball from my hand and it broke down and then i approached him and then from behind me there was another man shouting, leave him alone. the press need to be here. they're documenting history, so there were terrible elements of this crowd, but there were some elements that were really just there to watch. it wasn't entirely filled with rioters. >> i know you were there to document history and that is your job and the purpose of this documentary. but what were your personal reflections from that day? >> it took me quite a long time to process the event itself because it went on for so long. it starts at 10 minutes before 1 and then it didn't really finish until after 6:00. so it was very difficult to process. i had -- you know, it was an

adrenaline overload so i had -- it took ages for me to basically control my body temperature and to, you know, sleep well so it took a long time. the initial reflection was just trying to process -- it was trying to process the event. >> nick quested, we certainly appreciate you and thank you for sharing your story with us. >> thank you so much for having me. > an adrenaline overload and yet he and his crew were able to stay focused despite all that chaos which is really incredible and we have the footage to describe that. >> thousands of people pouring onto the capitol like water. quite the visual. we do turn to pope francis postponing his trip to the democratic republic of congo and south sudan in july. the director of the vatican press office issuing a statement saying, quote, the request comes at the request of his doctor in order not to jeopardize the results of the therapy that he is undergoing for his knee. now to a tribute to a broadway legend, a statue

you. a big day for you. your album just dropped. it's your "denim & rhinestones" era. what is big. what is it? >> i love to fully immerse myself in what i get to create and the songs that i get to make and i feel like i'm living in this beautiful world of denim and rhinestones and makes me happy. >> you know, you're headed back on tour. back in april you performed with axl rose from guns n' roses at stagecoach so are you going to have more collaborations like that on tour? >> i would love to, for sure. and i love that like i feel like every room i have walked in since stagecoach people are like, so, axl rose which i love because i love to brag on him. >> so, carrie, you have all these things going on juggling family at the same time. we actually have a photograph

i believe of your boys supporting you at your vegas show here. there they are and any chance they're going to join you on tour this time? >> well, my oldest now, he's 7. he'll be in second grade this fall so i feel like we just kind of want to keep them at home as much as possible but that said they'll probably come out on the weekends and i'll be swinging through nashville quite a bit through the tour so i'll get to see them and, you know, juggle all the things like we always do, but they'll be a little less out on the road with us than they have been in the past. >> carrie, when i read this, i had to double -- do a double take because i remember watching you win "american idol." and it has been 17 years. >> seems like yesterday. >> it's crazy, but you recently shared a journal entry that you wrote shortly after. what was it like to go back to that moment for you? >> i mean, it's always wonderful to be nostalgic and remember what got me here in the first place.

but reading my journal entries i was like, oh, my gosh, you were such a baby. you were just so in awe and in wonder and, you know, it was just a really nice way to kind of go back and remember such an incredible time in my life. >> and when you're not on stage you are a self-proclaimed farm girl. how do you find the time and how much time do you spend working on the farm? >> you can't take it out of me. i mean i grew up on a farm and i feel like it's just -- it's in my blood. i work as much as i can. i feel like i have eyes on it almost every day just getting out and doing little things here and there. i now have the boys going out and pulling weeds and stuff like that from the garden but i spend a lot of time. you make time for the things that you love and honestly there's so much about it that's therapy for me. it's just so great to just have the time to think and do something you enjoy that is good for everybody.

it's beneficial for everyone. >> that's right. once those boys could walk you got to put them to work and get them going here. we'll take any produce that you want to send our way when you get a second. one of the reasons you're not here instead in nashville for cma fest, i understand you're doing something special for the fans. tell us about it. >> oh, yes, this is such a busy week for country music and country music fans and i love that we have this whole week to, you know, give back and see them and meet them. but we have the "denim & rhinestones" experience in downtown nashville at the bell tower. fans can come by, take a break from the heat and they can see clothing and outfits that i wore on various tv performances or prformances in general. they can rhinestone things and they can bring stuff in. they can get a t-shirt and rhinestone it and, yeah, just kind of have a cool -- they can
