the biden administration is lifting covid testing requirements for international travelers coming to the u.s., ending one of the last remaining government mandates designed to contain the spread of the virus. the cdc announced yesterday that the requirement will end early tomorrow morning and they will continue to monitor the pandemic. abc news reporter ty hernandez has the latest. ty: as summer travel gets underway, the cdc is lifting requirements for international travelers to show a negative covid test before boarding a flight to the u.s.. the change goes into effect just after midnight sunday. the airline industry has lobbied to lift the requirement that has been in place for the last 17 months. major u.s. airlines are applauding the decision. united says in a statement "this is another important step, not just for air travel, but for all of the tourism jobs that

international travel supports not" jetblue's president says this will almost certainly boost summer travel. >> this provides them with peace of mind so they know they can make it home. ty: the u.s. is averaging nearly 110,000 new cases per day, back up to one of the highest points since february. more than 41 hundred a hospitalized with covid each day. among the cities seeing a surge, houston. >> we are clearly having a major surge. what is different is hospitalizations. although they have come up, they have not shot up like they did in prior searches. next week at the fda and cdc will review data for children under five. if the agencies find the vaccines safe and effective, vaccinations could begin as soon as june 21. >> it would mean that for the first time, essentially every american from our oldest to our

youngest would be eligible for the protection that vaccines provide. ty: ty hernandez, abc news, new york. liz: we are learning more about the spread of monkeypox in the u.s.. there are 45 cases across the country, more than twice the number last week. even though it is spreading, doctors say nobody has died from the outbreak. cdc officials dismissed the idea that monkeypox is airborne. they insist theo nel popatn is rather low. you cfs infectious disease specialist dr. monica gandhi tells us that the majority of cases are happening among men that have sex with other men. organizers of the san francisco pride parade partnered with the department of public health to run a series of psa's about monkeypox during the event. >> we wanted to make sure that much like with covid in the early time of that pandemic or that disease, that we were on the front lines of educating our community. liz: the california department

of public health confirmed eight cases of monkeypox across the country, at least five in the bay area. january 6 committees next hearing will be monday. three former leaders of the justice department are expected to testify. that includes jeff rosen. jeff rosen took over as attorney general when bill barr resigned. israel will address former president trump's effort to overturn the election and his desire to remove them when they did not go along with his plan. during the presentation thursday the committee played a clip of bill barr's testimony where he refuted trump's assertion there was voter florida -- voter fraud. >> i made it clear i did not agree with the idea of saying that the election was stolen. liz: the committee is expected to continue laying out its case that trump and his advisors keep spreading false claims about the election even though they knew he lost.

in custody for a fatal shooting last weekend is facing illegal firearms charges after investigators found over 60 guns including 25 illegal assault weapons and two ghost guns in the man's home. they found several high-capacity magazines and thousands of rounds of ammunition. this san jose resident is already in custody after he fatally shot a man on monterey road saturday night last week. he was arrested at the scene. it is the city's 13th homicide of the year. >> we are still looking into more information on the case. if folks are still hesitant to come forward and where there the day of the homicide, we ask them to come speak to why detective. >> he is also suspected of brandishing a firearm during a road rage incident in may. today in an effort to curb gun violence the oakland police department is holding its first

it moderated. it has come down. we needed to come down much more quickly. liz: the average price for gas nationwide is five dollars a gallon. that's two dollars higher than this time last year. on thursday the average peak over the five dollar mark for the first time ever according to gas buddy . california remains well above average at $6.43 per gallon and marin is the most expensive county at $6.66 per gallon. drivers filling up at one shell station at rancho -- rancho cordova took advantage of a technical error that had the pumps came -- cranking out gas for just $.69 per gallon, the glitch went on for three hours allowing one a driver to fill up for $14 then call family and friends to do the same. >> i looked at the number then saw $.69 per gallon. i hit the button and it started

pumping into the $stayed low. >> it turned into a circus in a matter of minutes. >> the mistake was misplaced a decimal point on the electric signs outside the station. americans are tipping less now than before the pandemic according to a report released this week. some bay area cities are adding surcharges. tipping can become confusing. zach fuentes looked at what is linked to the tipping defined and who it impacts most. zach: service workers up and down the street are working hard to help others relax. much of their income relies on tips. according to this report from credit cards.com, people in the u.s. are tipping less now than in 2019. >> well, that's the opposite of what i do. i tipped more because people have been unemployed. they have had a difficult time. zach: not everyone is this generous. look at these numbers from the report. in 201977 percent of u.s. adults always tip to servers at sit-down restaurants.

that number has dropped to 73%. inflation is a major factor along with hiring shortages that make it difficult to hire top of the line service. this restaurant owner says the pandemic and staffing did impact his business and potential tips. they added an 18% gratuity to everd y.>> our stuff was concery we are seeing what people are all about wanting to tip a little extra. zach: to some it may seem obvious to tip a server at a sit down restaurant. business owners want to remind everyone that other service industry workers also rely on tips. the owner of this ice cream shop such as workers do not serve you at a table, but can still use the tips. >> and they are working here for their educations, for their college. they take these jobs part-time, so it's very important. zach: at sushi confidential customer still pay a living wage
