computer program he was working on started acting like a human. good monday morning. i'm andrew dymburt. >> i'm veronica merkel in for mona. a bipartisan group of senators has reached a deal on a proposal that would be the most significant federal legislation on guns in nearly 30 years. abc's justin finch has details on the plans and what happens next, justin, good morning. >> reporter: andrew, good morning. that potential deal on gun legislation was announced on the anniversary of the pulse nightclub massacre, one of the deadliest mass shootings in u.s. history. ♪ in orlando, florida, last night a community coming together to remember the victims of the

pulse nightclub shooting, marking six years since the massacre took the lives of 49 people. >> you wish you can bring them back, but you'll never bring them back. one person made one decision that changed entire lives. it's -- it's sad. >> reporter: a bipartisan group of senators announced general agreement on new gun safety legislation. the bill includes funding for mental health resources, incentives for the creation of so-called red flag laws, increased funding for school safety, and strengthening the federal background check system. for buyers under age 21, the deal would require an investigative period to review juvenile and mental health records. >> comment on the gun reform? >> reporter: leaving church sunday, president biden gave a them thumbs-up to reporters when asked about the proposal, even though it does not include what he and others have asked for. no ban on assault-style rifles, no raising of the minimum age to

buy one. if the proposal passes, it would still be the most significant action taken by congress on gun safety since the 1990s. >> it makes me want to cry tears of happiness, because in some ways when we started doing this work, i thought the government was at least halfway functional. but unfortunately, it proved not to are when our kids needed to be saved. >> reporter: former congresswoman gabby giffords, a shooting survivor, called the proposal not perfect. but added, if carefully drafted and framed into law, this would be a life-saving step forward. it appears enough republicans support this plan for it to pass, but there's a long way to go. it's only an outline. the legislation has not even been formally written yet. veronica? >> justin, thank you. dozens of members of a far-right group have made bail after being arrested for allegedly planning a riot at a pride event in idaho. police say they found the 31 men from the white supremacist group patriot front inside shields, r

least one smoke grenade. authorities have been on heightenedthreats from these ki groups. >> we are seeing that both anti-government extremist groups as well as white nationalist groups are focused on june being pride month. it could be what we saw with the patriot front where they're actually just going to counter-protest or disrupt, which is disturbing, but perhaps not with violent intent. but there are other groups who have talked about targeting those events with violence. >> police made the arrests after a tip about suspicious activity. those arrested came from at least 11 other states. to the extreme heat gripping a large section of the country today. in southern california, mandatory evacuations have been ordered after a wildfire exploded in san bernardino county. near triple-digit temperatures and heavy winds have been fueling those flames. it's already burned about 1,000 acres and more than 200 firefighters were on the front lines overnight. in arizona, a wildfire near

flagstaff has forced evacuations. a suspect has been arrested. a dangerous heat is expected to spread from the southwest all the way to the carolinas today. we'll have the full forecast in just a moment. to your money and stocks overnight falling as a new workweek brings new concern about inflation, rising interes rates, and more worries on wall street. this morning, a top economist warns america's inflation crisis is about to get worse before it gets better. >> i think you've got to be very modest about what we know about this inflation process. and i fear that it's still going to get worse. we may well get to 9% at this rate. >> reporter: the federal reserve is expected to raise key interest rates by a half point wednesday in an effort to cool spending enough to curb inflation without tipping the economy into a recession. some analysts expect interest rates could rise by .75 points in the months ahead. >> maybe aggressively, 50, 50,

50, maybe a 75, until we really get inflation under control. and that means, frankly, risking the possibility of, as chairman powell said, some pain. >> reporter: america's 40-year-high inflation has been blamed on everything from a tight labor market to covid, russia's war in ukraine, and government spending. grocery prices are up nearly 12% from a year ago, the largest spike for eggs, meat, and bread since 1979. and gas prices nationwide now average more than $5 a gallon. >> i'm not driving as much. i'm not spending money maybe on going out to eat. >> reporter: the owner of this gas station in minnesota appears to be just as frustrated as his customers, putting up a sign saying, "we hate our gas prices too." according to financial website barron's, gas station profits are actually down as they deal with price increases from oil producers, refiners, and pipeline operators. meanwhile, some drivers in california enjoyed a different kind of sticker shot. a glitch at this station allowed

customers to pay just 69 cents a gallon for several hours. >> i looked at the numbers, i seen 69 cents a gallon. you know what i did, i hit that button, it started pumping. the dollar sign stayed low. >> the president says fighting inflation is his top priority, but he warned friday that inflation could last for a while. the january 6th committee is looking to lay out more evidence against former president trump today as it holds its second televised hearing about the attack on the capitol. trump's 2020 campaign manager, bill steppian, is among those set to testify with the focus showing the public that trump knowingly spread lies about election fraud. members of the committee claim they've uncovered enough evidence for trump to be indicted. >> once the evidence is accumulated by the justice department, it needs to make a decision about whether it can prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt the president's guilt or anyone else's. but they need to be investigated, if there's credible evidence, which i think there is. >> today's hearing will also
