bipartisan support in the senate. president biden said it is a good start but fails to support many of the measures he called for. justin is life in washington with reaction. justin: it is being called a modest deal. senate members met behind closed doors to hash out new gun reform policy, enough to win support from some senate republicans. in the wake of mass shootings, growing demand for lawmakers to do something. over the weekend, a breakthrough. a senate plan drafted by 10 democrats and 10 republicans that would strengthen background checks, allow juveniles to be screened younger than 21, expand gun restrictions for domestic violence abusers, allocations for funds for states enacting red flag laws, and bolster school security and mental health programs. >> i will put this bill on the

floor asap, so that congress can quickly act. justin: president biden weighing in, saying it doesn't do everything that i think is needed but reflects important steps in the right direction. the president push for tougher restrictions including on assault weapons ban, seen as some as threats to the second amendment. the senate framework spurred by deadly shootings in buffalo, new york, and uvalde, texas last month, nearly 50 more mass shootings since have fallen. 49 people were shot to death at the polls shooting in orlando. the weekend also saw gun safety protests across the u.s. led by david hogg and other survivors of the 2018 stoneman douglas high school shooting in parkland, florida. hopeful about the senate plan.

game five of the nba finals tonight. the warriors are back home hoping home-court advantage will give them a leg up on the celtics. ryan curry is live at chase center with all the excitement that will be happening there. it will be busy very soon. ryan: busy, indeed. less than 12 hours from the start of the game and sure enough, we will see fans trickling throughout the day. it's a crucial moment for golden state as they have the chance to take the momentum of the series. there will be as many as three games left in the season, at least two at chase center. we know how good they are at home. the only game they have lost at home this season was to boston in game one. golden state reconciled that loss with a friday when on the road thanks to an all-time performance from steph curry.

reggie: state senator scott wiener is respondent this morning after a bomb team was called on to sweep the home. someone said the openly gay legislator a piece of hate mail to him and his staff. it said that bombs were placed around his house. bomb sniffing dogs made a passer around his home to make sure that nothing was threatening. police say they found nothing. wiener says he typically gets about five death threats a week, but lately, there have been about 30. karina: officers from san francisco's mission station i remember one of their own. members held a vigil at 75th and dolores street to remember officer john cook, who was killed in a car crash 20 years ago. he and his partner were responding to a backup call from another officer. the patrol cars collided at this intersection in 2002.

cook still inspires his fellow officers. >> it gives us the strength and courage today to put the uniform on, to go into danger, to run in when others run out. that is what he did and would want us to do. karina: officer cook was with the san francisco police department for two years. he is survived by his partner, parents, and five siblings. reggie: we are hearing from a build a city councilmember, the latest attack from a brutal attack -- victim from a brutal attack. anders fung was walking with his children and family when he was hit on the head with a concrete block. his daughter chased after them and to take photos and they continued to throw objects at him. he suffered cuts and has a herniated disc in his neck. he says more needs to be done to stop these kinds of attacks. >> is important to speak out so

that our law enforcement understands, policymakers understand the impact to our community, how important it is to take action to stop the census violence and hate. reggie: he is expected to make a full recovery. the suspects have not been identified. karina: now to a story that you will only see on abc 7. are looking for the man who carjacked a man and grabbed him by the pavement. you see a man pacing eighth and jackson in chinatown. then a man pulls up to the nearby market and leaves his keys in the car while he goes inside. it was enough time for the suspect to drive off. later, the owner of the car tries to grab onto the car to stop the carjacking. instead, he is dragged on the ground for several feet. the victim suffered operations to multiple parts of his body including his face.

reggie: jury selection begins today in the trial of a father and son charged in the kidnapping and murder of kristin smart. paul and ruben flores will be tried separately in monterey county. the high-profile case that has been moved over concerned that the men could not get a fair trial. smart vanished in 1996. prosecutors alleged paul flores killed smart while trying to rape her in her dorm room. his father is accused of helping to bury the body. both men have pleaded not guilty. karina: country music superstar toby keith says he is battling stomach cancer. he revealed the news on social media, saying he received diagnosis in the fall.
