at home plate as a bat shatters landing a direct hit on the umpire. a goose named gangsta resorting to new extremes to protect his flock. good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> i'm veronica miracle in for mona. we begin with your money and a crucial decision being made today. >> the goal is to bring down sky high prices on everything from groceries to cars, but the federal reserve's decision on interest rates today is fraught with danger because if the fed acts too aggressively, it could mean big trouble for the wider economy and wall street is worried too. weeks of market turmoil have already taken tear toll on americans' 401(k)s. >> abc's ike ejiochi has more on what to expect today and the risk involved. >> reporter: good morning, veronica. as families struggle with the rising cost of just about everything, there's growing concern we're headed for a recession. this morning, more experts are increasing the likelihood of a

recession in the near future. >> the odds of a recession are going up. most economists now believe there is a 50% chance we'll get a recession in the next 12 to 18 months. >> reporter: on tuesday the labor department reported producer prices rose 10.8% last month compared to the same time last year. those wholesale prices reflect inflation before it reaches consumers. today the federal reserve is expected to boost the cost of borrowing again in hopes of slowing down the economy, possibly hiking interest rates by 0.75%, the highest jump since 1994. >> everyone can agree that this inflation is very painful, and it has to come down. so the only way of doing that is getting those interest rates up and slowing the growth rate in the economy. >> reporter: meanwhile, mortgage rates have now hit 6% and car loans about to get more expensive too. so are the sticker prices. new cars are now averaging more than $47,000.

>> although the prices are up for may, it's only 1%, and so what that indicates is that as the increases start to become smaller and smaller, we may be headed toward a place where the prices will start to decrease, but still it's a very high number. >> reporter: gas prices nationwide are averaging more than $5 a gallon. prices in some areas like west virginia skyrocketed 28 cents in just the last week. the white house blames russia's war in ukraine and pandemic supply chain bottlenecks for the high prices. president biden yesterday pushed back at his critics who say his administration's spending policies including pandemic stimulus funds fueled this inflation. >> i don't want to hear any more of these lies about reckless spending. we're changing people's lives. >> reporter: louisiana senator john kennedy reacting, tweeting, president biden is right, 40-year high inflation, formula shortages and $5 gas are changing lives. meanwhile, the white house is defending president biden's trip

to saudi arabia next month where he'll discuss energy prices with the crown prince. a group of september 11 families is demanding biden hold the saudis accountable for the 9/11 attacks. veronica. >> ike, thank you. overnight we learned two california police officers have been killed apparently ambushed outside of a motel responding to a call about a stabbing in el monte just outside of los angeles when the suspect opened fire. officials say he was later killed in a shootout. one of the officers killed was than a year ago. >> they were acting as the first line of defense for our community members when they were essentially ambushed. >> police say the woman involved in the initial stabbing call was the suspect's girlfriend. she was not hurt. now to the flood disaster around yellowstone national park. thousands of people have been forced to flee, and now the region famous for its

unparalleled beauty is trying to begin a massive cleanup. catastrophic flooding at yellowstone has forced more than 10,000 visitors to evacuate. >> lots and folks are experiencing lots of extensive damage and that -- that's going to remain to be seen in the days to come. >> reporter: the yellowstone river overflowing its banks after days of rain and rapid snow melt. near record high temperatures last weekend melted five inches of snow in higher elevations triggering the historic flood. >> we were right in the middle of it. >> we were right in the middle of it, yeah. >> watching all the rivers rise and we knew we had to get out. >> reporter: the raging river washing away everything in its path including this bunk house for park employees sweeping it miles downstream. >> it was just going really fast and the water was just taking logs down the river. >> reporter: parts of a main highway in the park also washed away. >> whoa. >> reporter: rocks raining

down on a highway hitting this suv. officials say the park could remain closed for a week and northern entrances may not re-open at all this summer. outside the park major damage in the town of gardiner. a washed out bridge and flooded roads making it nearly impossible to evacuate. the national guard airlifting at least a dozen people who were trapped. >> the rain let up but you still have towns submerged. this is a road and you can see there are cars, businesses and homes all still underwater. >> reporter: elsewhere across much of the country it's the extreme heat that poses the biggest weather threat. one-third of the u.s. is under a heat advisory today. triple-digit temperatures in the midwest adding to the number of records smashed. on saturday at least 27 major cities tied or broke heat records. california's death valley was the hottest location at 123 degrees. and back to yellowstone, remarkably no deaths or injuries have been reported.

meanwhile, as the historic drought grips much of the west federal officials are warning cutbacks are needed because of low levels along the colorado river and say the necessary cuts could amount to california's entire share of water from the river. talks are under way with seven states to develop a plan. and breaking overnight primary elections in south carolina have resulted in a split decision for former president trump. five-term congressman tom rice has become the first house republican who voted to impeach trump to lose a primary. but representative nancy mace who blamed trump for the capitol riot scored a win over a trump backed candidate. meanwhile, in nevada jim marchand is projected to win the primary for secretary of state. he has falsely claimed the 020 election was stolen. a russian court extended person basketball star brittney griner's detention through at least july 2nd. she's been in russian custody since february when she was arrested on drug smuggling charges. the state department says round the clock efforts to bring her home continue.

back now with the lululemon heist uncovered. authorities got a tip about stolen lululemon gear being shipped to an apartment in california from the midwest. after it was delivered, a search revealed more than $200,000 in clothing. the residents claimed they didn't know what was inside the boxes. police are investigating. a mishappen involving a bounce house turned a school celebration into chaos. 14 elementary school kids were injured. one suffered a broken leg. when the inflatable slide overturned, apparently because. uneven weight. one child was catapulted into the air. one witness who didn't want to appear on camera described the scene. >> when i seen that child go from the sky up, he fell to the

gate. the bounce house was about five feet away and that's when he landed. he hit hit head. it was horrible. >> in december, five children died in a bounce house in australia. a town in new jersey is considering banning them on public property due to liability concerns. new developments in the search for a new hampshire girl missing for three years. the fbi has now removed a refrigerator from her father's former home. here's the report he. >> reporter: this morning search for placing girl in new hampshire has led police to her father's former home. and among the items taken away, this refrigerator. carefully wrapped in plastic. and wooden planks, all loaded on to a truck. >> hopefully we can find some time of evidence. because you know, harmony needs justice. >> reporter: harmony montgomery was last seen in 2019 when she was 5 years old. police weren't notified for more than two years. her father had custody of her at

the time. investigators say he and his now estranged wife kayla told police that harmony was taken to her mother's in massachusetts around thanksgiving of that year. but harmony's mother offers a different time line saying she last saw her daughter the previous easter. adam has since been on charges that he hit harmony and unrelated firearms charges. and kayla montgomery is charged with perjury. both have pleaded not guilty. >> i can't even imagine the painful. >> reporter: investigators, many in hazmat suits, spent hours in the couple's home in manchester yesterday processing evidence under a green tent. harmony would now be 8 years old. >> regardless. outcome, i'm still going to bring her home. i'm still going to fight for justice. >> reporter: police say they received hums of tip buzz no charges have been filed in harmony's disappearance. a $150,000 reward is offered in the case.
