morning to you. as you just said one of the top isis leaders in syria. solemn tell you what we know as this information is coming in. his name is hani ahmed al kurdi. officials say he was an facilitator actively planning isis operations. u.s.-led coalition forces captured him during this rare military operation in northwestern syria yesterday. they say no civilians were harmed or damage sustained to any u.s. resources during the raid. now, international observers on the ground say two helicopters landed in a village about two miles from the turkish border with coalition forces chasing down gunmen. this is the second major raid against isis under president biden. u.s. special forces attempted to kill or capture the group's leader back in february. you'll remember, he detonated a suicide vest killing himself and several other family members as well. in this case now al kurdi was captured alive making him an important asset and a potential information source to isis and

the terrorist operations in that region. >> isis has not been in the news lately but remain a serious threat. >> reporter: yeah, exactly. officials are saying that this morning that certainly isis is not as strong as it once was but still has active cells in iraq, syria and they've increasingly been conducting brazen operations in rural areas in the region. george? >> cecilia vega, thanks very much. t.j.? george, to ukraine where two american fighters are missing. reportedly captured. their families are asking for help as president biden pledges another billion dollars in military aid. our foreign correspondent james longman is in ukraine with the very latest. james, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, t.j. the leaders of france, germany and italy are all in kyiv for talks with president zelenskyy. he'll be asking them to speed up the pace of weapons deliver. meanwhile, there is growing concern for these two american veterans who are thought to have been fighting alongside ukraine in the war who may now have been captured by russia. this morning, the families of two american veterans who have gone missing in ukraine are calling for them to be brought home. 39-year-old alexander drueke and 27-year-old andy huynh both volunteered to fight alongside

the ukrainian military. there are now unconfirmed reports the two may have been captured by russian forces in the kharkiv region. the biden administration says they're aware of those reports and are closely monitoring the situation. >> if it's true we'll do everything we can to get them safely back home. >> reporter: now their families just want them home. huynh's fiancee telling abc news he joined the ukrainians to make a difference. >> we just really want him back. i mean, he's got such a big heart. he knew this wasn't the easy th thing, but it was the right thing. and -- sorry. he just -- even though not great things have happened, i'm still really, really proud of him. >> reporter: alex's mother said he went to ukraine to stop russia. he was concerned that putin may want to expand further west if he took ukraine. >> he wanted to go over and help train the ukrainian soldiers and show them how to use the

equipment that the u.s. has been sending over there for them. >> reporter: this comes as president biden announced the largest u.s. military aid commitment to ukraine so far. the new aid package including more howitzer artillery systems, much needed rocket ammunition and new harpoon anti-ship weapons. president zelenskyy thanked the u.s. for the aid. [ speaking foreign language ] saying, "i'm grateful for the support. it's especially important for our defense in donbas." now, the show of unity from these european leaders today will be welcomed here in ukraine but it's really more weapons commitments that they really want. they face a real uphill struggle here in the donbas. amy? >> that scene behind you speaks volumes. james longman, thank you. now to that big move by the federal reserve raising interest rates, the biggest hike in nearly three decades to help fight inflation but the move also triggering fears about the possible side effects and economic slowdown, even a recession. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is tracking the latest for us. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy.

and we're already starting to see those impacts especially from rising prices which are taking their toll on the american economy and the american consumer who are spending a lot less on their wants in stores like these because they have to focus so much more on their needs with prices and rising interest rates. this morning, mounting fears of a recession as the federal hikes interest rates 0.75%, the largest increase in nearly three decades. >> high inflation imposes significant hardship, especially on those least able to meet the cost of essentials like food, housing and transportation. >> reporter: with food costs up nearly 12%, gasoline up nearly 50% and airfares soaring nearly 40% from a year ago -- >> i'm probably spending a good 50 to $75 more a week on groceries. >> reporter: with so much of family budgets going to necessities like gas, americans are starting to cut back. retail sales falling 0.3% in may.

>> there is a lot of economic uncertainty right now. i think it would be wise to be looking at how much money you are bringing in, how much money do you have saved and do you have money set aside for a rainy day? >> reporter: the fed's aggressive rate hike meant to stabilize prices will make it more expensive to borrow money. everything from car loans to mortgages which have already climbed from 3% in january to 6% now to credit cards. in real terms that means if you're carrying a balance of $5,000 on the average credit card making minimum payments, you'll have to pay an additional $289 in interest because of this rate hike. which is why it's an important and smart idea to, if you're in a position to do so, start paying off those credit cards now. the federal reserve is expected to continue hiking interest rates into the rest of this year

and the odds of a recession according to economists are now 72%. a 72% chance that we will see a recession by early 2024. george? >> wow, that has gone up. rebecca, thanks very much. now to the next hearing on the january 6th attack on the capitol and will focus on how president trump pressured mike pence to block the certification. jon karl has exclusive new images of mike pence on january 6th and what we know about the testimony we'll hear from pence's inner circle. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. these never before seen photos of pence and his family that were taken on january 6th provide a fascinating window on the pressure campaign that pence was facing. a pressure campaign that ultimately led to threats

against his life. the photos from january 6th that you've never seen, obtained exclusively by abc news, vice president mike pence just whisked off the senate floor by the secret service huddles with his brother and his daughter, the fear visible on her face, second lady karen pence is seen closing the curtains as the mob of rioters storms the capitol fearing they would see her husband. minutes later pence and his family were taken to a loading dock beneath the capitol complex late that night tweeting these pictures with the capitol police. [ crowd chanting ] >> during the siege, the crowd of trump supporters was searching for pence after he rebuffed trump's demand to overturn the 2020 election. the january 6th committee's republican vice chair says they will prove that trump agreed with those trying to get pence. >> the president responded with this sentiment, quote, maybe our supporters have the right idea. mike pence, quote, deserves it. >> reporter: trump denied that after the committee's first hearing, but listen to what he told me just two months after the capitol attack. >> you heard those chants. that was terrible, i mean, you know, those --

>> he could have -- well, the people were very angry. >> they were saying, hang mike pence. >> because it's common sense, it's common sense, jon, that you're supposed to protect. how can you -- if you know a vote is fraudulent, right, how can you pass on a fraudulent vote to congress? >> reporter: but the vote wasn't fraudulent and pence's role in certifying the election was only ceremonial. trump reese white house lawyers, aides and pence himself had told trump that. >> president trump is wrong. i had no right to overturn the election. >> reporter: trump ignored all of them and launched an all-out pressure campaign against pence even issuing this warning the day of the attack. >> mike pence will have to come through for us and if he doesn't, that will be a sad day for our country because you'll never take back our country with weakness. you have to show strength and you have to be strong. >> reporter: after the capitol was cleared that night pence returned. this picture showing him working

their possession emails between thomas and john eastman. he was the lawyer that was pushing this whole argument that pence could somehow single-handedly overturn the election. george, i don't know that those emails will be a major part of the committee's investigation. >> jon karl, thanks. we'll have full coverage of the hearings beginning at 1:00 p.m. on abc. amy? well, george, we turn to the severe weather on the move after striking the midwest at least two reported tornadoes touching down overnight. let's go to sam champion in for ginger tracking that threat. good morning, sam. >> good morning, amy. so, yeah, five states had severe storms. i want to show you some of this. this is a massive wedge-shaped tornado in wisconsin. two tornadoes in wisconsin. now, the national weather service saw this as a particularly dangerous situation. here's why. when it moved out of the fields across any building it destroyed them and looked like it was about a quarter mile wide. more details on that storm as we go through the day today but here with twin fronts moving toward the east coast there are storms clearing new york earlier today, also in pennsylvania but this is where the tough stuff lines up. pittsburgh, state college, be heads-up for damaging wind and hil. where the front dips and it

tries to fight the massive heat in the country there will be another area of storms. omaha, you're on the tip end, kansas city, springfield, watch for storms there. we'll have more on that big heat in the country and it's a big problem in the moment. t.j., what's up? >> sam, we appreciate you. good having you here as always. want to turn to a major development in the battle against covid. an fda panel recommended vaccines for children as young as 6 months old. our whit johnson joins us now with more on this. good morning to you, whit. >> reporter: hey, t.j., good morning. this is the news many parents of young children have been waiting for since the covid vaccines first started rolling out a year and a half ago. the fda advisory panel voting unanimously yesterday first to recommend emergency use authorization for the moderna vaccine for kids 6 months to 6 years old. it's a two-shot series. a quarter of the dose given to adults. the panel then voting to recommend the pfizer vaccine for children six months to 5 years old. that would be three shots just one-tenth the size of the adult dose. a few more steps in the process.

she was more the aggressor. >> he balled up his fists, leaned back and head butted me square in the nose. >> but never did i myself reach the point of striking ms. heard in any way. >> reporter: the juror, one of five men on the seven-person jury, said heard's emotional testimony was not realistic. >> i want to move on with my life. >> reporter: the crying, the facial expressions she had, the staring at the jury, all of us were very uncomfortable. she would answer one question and she would be crying and two seconds later she would turn ice cold. some of us used the expression crocodile tears. >> i didn't think he knew what he was doing. i don't know how -- i don't want

to do this. >> reporter: on depp's side a lot of the jury felt what he was saying at the end of the day was more believable. he just seemed a little more real in terms of how he was responding to questions. his emotional state was very stable throughout. >> it could begin with, you know, throwing a tv remote at my head. it could be a -- throwing a glass of wine in my face. >> reporter: the juror said the revelation heard had not donated her $7 million divorce settlement to charity was a fiasco for her. >> you still haven't donated the $7 million, divorce settlement to charity? >> incorrect. i pledged the entirety. i use pledge and donation synonymous with each other. >> reporter: she goes on a talk show in the uk. the video shows her telling the host she gave all that money away and the terms she used in that video clip were i gave it away. i donated it. it's gone. but the fact is she didn't give much of it away at all.

he also disputed heard's attorney's claim the jury was influenced by social media saying, we followed the evidence. myself and at least two other jurors don't use twitter or facebook. others who had it made a point not to talk about it. he said, ultimately what i think is truthful was that they were both abusive to each other. i don't think that makes either of them right or wrong. but to rise to the level of what she was claiming, there wasn't enough or any evidence that really supported what she was saying. he added that he believed johnny did not hit amber. and he also revealed the jury was given no guidance on the amount of money both stars were awarded. each juror threw out a number they thought was fair and notably about the attorneys, he said he thought depp's team was sharp while heard's team had sharp elbows, meaning they were abrupt and frequently interrupted. now, heard, of course, plans to appeal this and depp is about to be back in court with these same lawyers for a separate case.

he's accused of assaulting a manager on a movie set back in 2017. guys? >> okay, trevor, thanks. let's bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams. i guess it's common sense the jurors found depp more credible. >> i always find these jury interviews to be fascinating after a case to know exactly what they were thinking about all the evidence presented here and it's not just that they found depp more credible. it's the little nuances, right? it's the little things that bugged them about amber heard, and i think that's so important. people forget that it really can come down to the credibility of the person testifying. we always say in cases, in criminal cases, for example, if a defendant takes the witness stand, the case could come down to the credibility of that witness. and it's true. and it's not just what they're saying, it's how they're saying it. and i think that's part of -- >> the perils of being overcoached? >> yes. remember, we talked about this on the show. i said there's a danger.

if she's looking at the jurors too much, that could be a problem. it can seem like she's acting like it's over-rehearsed. yes, a lawyer will tell a client try to make sure you look at the jury. make sure you recognize them but i thought she was doing it too much. every question she was asked she would literally, she would pause, she would turn over to the jury and she'd begin her answer and it's clear that at least this juror felt that was rehearsed. >> you said some things about her bugged the juror, but also it seems her legal team bugged them as well. >> yeah, and, look, you got to wonder whether those two things are intertwined once they decided against them. lawyering can matter. and it's a reminder, it's not just the defendant, it's not just the witnesses. how the lawyers perform can end up either frustrating the jurors, impressing the jurors. i'm not saying it's going to be make or break, but it's a combination of those little things that can make all the difference in a case like this. >> as you say, it's fascinating to hear what was going on in that jury deliberation room. did anything this juror say surprise you? >> just i guess it was how much they were focusing on the

as you around i discussed, experts are warning the tick population is on the rise, and the lone star tick is popping up in more states sparking more cases of that rare syndrome. as summer kicks into full gear, a warning this morning about the lone star tick spreading a rare but concerning condition. named for the white dot on the back of adult females the insect is known to be one of the sources of a syndrome called alpha-gal causing an allergy to meat. >> i was cooking bacon for my family. i didn't realize what my face looked like until i had facetimed my mom and she started to freak out. >> reporter: jacqueline scott says her reaction happened out of the blue. her symptoms quickly moving from mysterious to dangerous. >> my eyes were almost swollen shut. i had bruising kind of all over my face and then kind of looked like sort of like a red rash all over. not necessarily hives. this red rash of blotchiness all over my body. >> reporter: soon the missouri mom of three was having trouble breathing.
