latest on the church shooting in alabama. this morning, police want to know why a gunman stormed a church potluck dinner before opening fire on the crowd. >> active shooter situation. multiple patients at this time. at these three patients. the scene is not secure. >> reporter: according to police, the shooter ran into the church out side vestavia hills 6:00 p.m. thursday and shot and killed two victims. people jumping into action holding down the suspect. >> the shooter has been held down. they've got the shooter restrained. >> radical support of the law from st. stephen's and this shooting. >> reporter: america's latest shooting tragedy comes as senate

negotiators say they have nearly agreed on the text of a bill to curb gun violence in the u.s. senator john cornyn, lead republican negotiator hinting the deal could fall apart if they drag on saying it's now or never. >> there are a couple of issues that need to be settled before we can reach an agreement. >> reporter: in cornyn's home state of texas, the uvalde school police department is facing new scrutiny for their response to the elementary school mass shooting that left 19 children dead. >> the most respectful thing i think we can do is try to get some of those lingering questions answered for the people in this city. >> reporter: a legislative committee is investigating why officers waited 77 minutes before going into the classroom where students were trapped with the shooter. the committee speaking to five witnesses thursday including the principal, the school aus.ile e questions after the hearing, the school's principal broke her silence speaking out for the first time since the shooting. >> they're going to compile a report. i'm just concerned for my family and my kids.

>> the final victim of the uvalde shooting will be laid to rest tomorrow. turning to the war in ukraine where three americans are now identified as missing in action. one is reportedly a decorated marine veteran grady kurpasi who hasn't been heard from since late april. the other two are alex drueke and andy huynh. a new image circulating appears to show them in russian custody. >> if the russians were to claim that they had such individuals, i assume we would pursue that if we had reason to believe credible reason to believe that these individuals were in russian custody, we would pursue that as appropriate. >> drueke and huynh haven't been heard from for a week. the third hearing by the january 6th committee laid out gripping details of the aordinan up the pressure on former vice president mike pence to overturn the election, and we learned just how dangerously close the violent mob of trump supporters came to the vice president.

abc's faith abubey is live from washington. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning to you, mona. the january 6th committee has relied heavily on trump's inner circle and well-respected conservative republicans to make their case that trump unsuccessfully launched a damaging attack on u.s. democracy to illegally try to stay this power. the january th committee's third public hearing reconstructed in great detail the immense pressure campaign former president donald trump waged on his own vice president in private and in public to name him the winner of the 2020 election he lost. >> mike pence is going to have to come through for us. >> reporter: former white house aides and mike pence's legal counsel testifying. the pressure only grew intense as pence rebuffed the efforts telling trump the vice president does not have the power to overturn a presidential election. but on the morning of january 6th trump calling pence from the oval office. >> the conversation was pretty heated. >> i remember hearing the word wimp. >> reporter: according to the committee even though

conservative attorney john eastman was among multiple advisers and white house lawyers who told trump the plan to overturn the election results was illegal, eastman still pushed the scheme later asking for a presidential pardon unsuccessfully. trump, meanwhile, stoking his supporters by repeatedly attacking mike pence at the january 6th rally and again with this tweet saying pence lacked courage, this as the angry mob stormed the capitol. [ crowd chanting, "hang mike pence" ] >> his aides stumped. >> it felt like he was pouring gasoline on the fire. >> reporter: showing them hiding then moved to an underground parking garage when the angry mob came within 40 feet of the vice president. pence eventually certifying the results after consulting with widely respected conservative judge michael luttig. >> that declaration of donald trump as the next president would have plunged america into

now to the economy and president biden saying a recession is not inevitable. in a new interview the president also addressed republican claims that his covid relief program has caused high inflation calling that criticism bizarre. abc's derricke dennis has more. >> reporter: this morning, president biden is trying to tamp down recession fears in a new interview telling the associated press americans are really, really down after two years with the coronavirus pandemic and volatility in the economy. the president also said a recession is still not inevitable, although a growing number of experts disagree and biden pushed back at critics who say his administration's spending policies are fully to blame for inflation reaching a 40-year high saying, if it's my fault why is it the case in every other major industrial country in the world that inflation is higher. you ask yourself that. i'm not being a wise guy but canada, japan, france and germany among other major industrial countries have all reported lower inflation rates

than the u.s. >> he says that inflation is worse everywhere but here. that's not true. the u.s. has worse inflation than germany, france, japan, canada, india, italy, saudi arabia. so why is he sighing that? >> well, i think what we are saying is that when you talk about inflation, it is a global thing, and it is not just about the united states. this is something that everyone is feeling because of coming out of a once in a lifetime pandemic, because of the war that russia has started in ukraine. >> reporter: the federal reserve has raised interest rates at the quickest pace in nearly 30 years to boost the cost of borrowing in an effort to slow the economy down. on wall street investors reacting to the rate hikes and fears of a recession, the stock market is on track to have its worst week since march 2020. on thursday the dow dropping more than 700 points below 30,000. the federal reserve is expected to continue raising interest rates at each of their monthly

children a secret. the georgia republican confirms a report he has a total of three kids he had not previously mentioned publicly. walker calls claims that he hid his children, quote, outrageous. in the past he has criticized fathers who leave their children. now to the dramatic video showing a player saving a referee's life on the basketball court. abc's andrea fujii has the details. >> reporter: this morning, heart-pounding moments on the basketball court when a referee collapsed during a game, and one of the players performed cpr. >> i seen him go down, so my my instincts kind of kick in and what i was taught as a firefighter is to run toward the emergency, not run away from it. >> reporter: video shows toledo glass city basketball player myles copeland was on the bench when referee john scully passed out. copeland using skills from his day job as a firefighter checked the ref's vitals. he performed the lifesaving move.

>> he doesn't have a pulse. he's not breathing. >> reporter: copeland performed cpr for ten minutes until paramedics arrived. scully alert as he was being wheeled away on a stretcher. >> john, he's just -- he gets emotional when he talks about myles, so there's just such a deep reality that john would not be here without myles being there. >> reporter: copeland had just worked a 24-hour shift with toledo fire and rescue before hitting the road to play a game against the jamestown jackals in new york. his schedule doesn't allow him to attend many games, but he says it was divine timing he was there. >> luckily my schedule had lined up that day, and good thing i was there and able to make the game because i was able to help john and bring him back. >> reporter: after his heroics, his team won the game and got a standing ovation from the crowd. >> i don't feel like a hero. i feel like just another person that just happened to be in the right spot at the right time
