shooter started firing at a crowd inside st. stephen's episcopal church killing two people and injuring one. >> it was almost surreal. nothing was really running through my mind. it was like, what's going on? you know, this can't be happening. it's right next to me. >> reporter: police say the suspect was arrested on the scene. >> shooter has been held down. they've got the shooter restrained. >> reportesr: but no motive has been identified. alabama governor kay ivey saying this should never happen in a church, in a store, in the city or anywhere. we continue to closely monitor the situation. >> the church, it's the one place that, you know, you go to heal, go to pray, go to feel relieved and just tonight it's not like that. >> reporter: and overnight, the church's lead pastor addressing the congregation. >> that's what we do as people of faith, we come together in the midst of life and death. >> reporter: and there's still . police have not told us how the suspect was detained or what led up to that shooting and this

community is now another community added to the list of cities still reeling from gun violence in this country. george. >> every single day, elwyn, okay, thanks very much. amy. now to those growing concerns about the economy with the stock market taking another steep plunge after the federal reserve raised interest rates to fight inflation. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis has been tracking it all for us. good morning to you, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, amy, and we are in the midst of the worst week for stocks since march of 2020 at the start of the pandemic with the s&p 500, that is what's reflected in most retirement accounts, down 6% this week and think of this as wall street confronting its new normal. for the last decade the federal reserve kept interest rates near 0%. they helped generate economic growth and they also helped drive things up like stocks, cryptocurrencies and home values, but we are faced with historic inflation now and the fed must do the opposite. they are hiking interest rates trying to drive prices lower and they're taking that juice out of the economy, juice that we have become very accustomed to living off for many years and that has

put wall street on edge and it has driven up the chances for a recession, amy. >> okay, rebecca, what does it mean for the average american's finances? >> reporter: it has near-term and long-term effects. it means the volatility in your retirement account, it means it's more expensive to borrow if you want a new credit card, an auto loan or mortgage. we've seen mortgages go from 3% to 6%. it's going to cost you more there. finally, if you have money in a savings account, you will get paid more with higher interest rates. that's the sort of better side with all of this, amy. >> we'll take that little skosh of positive news there. thank you so much, rebecca. t.j. we turn to the latest on ukraine. a third american fighter has now gone missing. this after two others were reportedly captured by the russians. our foreign correspondent james longman is in ukraine with the latest. hello to you, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning

to you, t.j. when this war began small but significant numbers of foreigners came to join the fight alongside the ukrainians. now that ukraine is in some trouble, it seems more of them are getting captured, including at least now possibly three americans. this morning, a new image circulating on russian media appears to show two americans in russian custody. >> we have a contact at the state department. he is aware of the photo and they are working to verify it. and we are very hopeful. >> reporter: the two americans, 39-year-old alex drueke and 27-year-old andy huynh volunteered to fight alongside the ukrainians and went missing outside of kharkiv days ago. their families now desperate for answers. >> we get stressful because we don't have answers at the moment. waiting is always very hard. but we are encouraged. >> reporter: now the u.s. is looking into reports that a third american who volunteered to fight for ukraine may have

also been captured. >> similarly our understanding was that this individual had traveled to ukraine to take up arms. >> reporter: this comes as leaders from france, germany, italy, and romania all arrived in ukraine in a show of solidarity. they met with president zelenskyy. in a joint press conference, zelenskyy said it would take an international effort to stop putin's war. only connectively and united will it be a powerful force to stop them. >> reporter: in that spirit of unity the european union's executive arm has said they'll put forward ukraine as a candidate for membership of the european union. >> thank you, as always. amy. now to the latest on the january 6th capitol attack. testimony zeroing in on vice president mike pence and the pressure he was under to block the certification of that election. our congressional correspondent rachel scott has all the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the committee says that pressure campaign by former president

donald trump was relentless pushing his own vice president to do something that he had no power to do and putting the country on the brink of a constitutional crisis. this morning, gripping new testimony about donald trump's last-ditch efforts to stop his own vice president from certifying his election loss, calling mike pence ahead of that rally on january 6th. >> the conversation was pretty heated. it was a different tone than i'd heard him take with the vice president before. >> i remember hearing the word wimp, either he called him a wimp. i don't remember if he said you are a wimp, you will be a wimp. wimp is the word i remember. >> reporter: pence repeatedly told trump no, that he didn't have the power to overturn the election and trump's lawyer knew it too. >> dr. eastman himself admitted in an email that the fake electors had no legal weight. >> reporter: trump pressed on. >> mike pence is going to have to come through for us and if he doesn't, that will be a sad day for our country. >> reporter: but pence was not budging and drafted a statement

rejecting trump's plans. >> the vice president had said this may be the most important thing i ever say. >> reporter: rioters started to storm the capitol. angry mobs chanted to hang the vice president. >> if pence caves we'll drag him through the streets. you politicians are going to get [ bleep ] drug through the streets. >> i guess the hope is such a show of force that pence will decide to do the right thing according to trump. [ crowd chanting, "hang mike pence" ] >> reporter: aides told trump the capitol had been breached. the former president tweeted this. >> president trump tweeted, mike pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our constitution. >> when that tweet, the mike pence tweet was sent out i remember us saying that that was the last thing that needed to be tweeted out at the moment. the situation was already bad and so it felt like he was

pouring gasoline on the fire by tweeting that. >> reporter: pence was first evacuated to a nearby office, dring closer. >> make no mistake about the fact that the vice president's life was in danger. a recent court filing by the department of justice explains that a confidential informant from the proud boys told the fbi that the proud boys would have killed mike pence if given a chance. >> reporter: secret service rushed pence and his family to an underground location. the rioters just 40 feet away. in these never before seen photos the vice president hunkered down. in one photo holding a phone watching president trump finally address the rioters. >> does it surprise you to see how close the mob was to the evacuation route that you took? >> i could hear the din of the rioters in the building while we moved, but i don't think i was aware that they were as close as that. >> reporter: pence's counsel greg jacob testified trump never called to check on his own vice pesident who certified the election hours after the

insurrection. >> when we got down to the secure location, the secret service directed us to get into the cars, which i did, and then i noticed that the vice president had not. the vice president did not want to take any chance that the world would see the vice president of the united states fleeing the united states capitol. >> reporter: pence has continued to defend his actions. he says that trump was wrong and that he was doing his constitutional duty and sources tell us that trump and pence have not spoken in over a year, george. >> okay, rachel, thanks. let's bring in our chief washington correspondent jon karl. we've known the broad outlines of the story for well over a year. when you see that minute-by-minute detail, it's astonishing, terrifying. >> reporter: george, the second half of that hearing was as powerful and intense an hour of congressional hearing, as any i have ever seen, the committee

clearly demonstrating that mike pence's life was in danger and drawing a direct line from the words of donald trump to the murderous rage of the people that were hunting his own vice president down in this building. this also they showed using the words of people in trump's inner circle, that there was absolutely no legal basis for what trump was demanding, that it was, frankly, illegal. so, george, whether or not this ends up being criminal, crimes that are prosecuted by the justice department, i think what the committee did here was clearly showing what trump did on that day and the days leading up to it was clearly a betrayal of america, a betrayal of american democracy. >> right, and that's the open question. certainly laying the legwork for a possible criminal prosecution by showing trump and his aides knew or should have known it was patently illegal. there is a dispute between the department of justice and the committee over the transcripts to the

interviews. >> reporter: the justice department went public saying that the committee is damaging their investigation by not turning over all their transcripts. it shows that the justice department is paying attention to what is happening but two things, remember that the purpose of this committee is not to do criminal investigation, criminal prosecution. it is to demonstrate for history and for the american public the truth of what happened here to demonstrate it clearly. i am sure that ultimately those transcripts will be turned over to the justice department. the priority.ngs right here are- if they turn those transcripts over to the justice department, they are in theory available to anybody that the justice department could be prosecuting through discovery so right now the committee is focusing on these hearings. i am sure, though, eventually that everything that they uncover will go to the justice department. >> okay, jon, thanks very much. two more hearings coming up next week. i'll be speak with adam kinzinger on sunday on "this week." t.j. we turn to what was an

emotional night, a big night for steph curry and the golden state warriors. yes, they're nba champions once again. they beat the celtics in six games. steph, of course, led the way and named for the first time the finals mvp. will reeve is in boston. he was there for it all and what a night this was for steph and we saw him really emotional in a way we hadn't quite seen before. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, t.j. it was a special night and got the chance to sit down with steph curry after the game and he told me this was the most emotionally taxing game that he's ever been a part of, to see him break down in the waning moments of this win was to witness a legend redefining and enhancing his legacy in realtime. a player and a team back on top. >> that'll do it. >> reporter: this morning, the golden state warriors are nba champions. blowing out the boston celtics, 103-90. golden state capturing their fourth title in eight years. superstar steph curry bolstering his already legendary credentials with his first finals mvp award.

at what moment in the game did you realize you were going to win your fourth title and what were the emotions and thoughts running through you? >> i started to get really emotional because, again, all that weight that we've carried over these last years of trying to get back here, how hard it is to get to this level and how hard it is to win. and with about a minute and a half left i literally started crying on the court just because i knew how much it meant. >> reporter: the all-time great emotional at the final buzzer and celebratory after. after missing two full seasons with injuries, the mountaintop feels extra special to klay thompson. >> it's not everest, but it's close. maybe kilimanjaro. the achilles the beast. it's so tedious. acl is not easy here but to play at a high level i'm grateful and thank god every single day. >> reporter: draymond green sharing his fourth title with his family. >> i want my kids to able to see

currency crash. bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have taken a nosedive as interest rates rise and investors search for less risk and rebecca jarvis has that. >> reporter: there is a lot of interest in the story, considering the number of amateurs and first-time investors that got caught up in the hype and celebrities that helped drive it. cryptocurrencies were supposed to be a hedge against the kind of economy we're experiencing right now, but now they're crashing. this morning, after years of hype -- >> fortune favors the brave. >> reporter: -- and major celebrity endorsements, cryptocurrencies crashing. the mania reaching a fever pitch earlier this year with a-listers including matt damon, reese witherspoon, and lebron james promoting the digital currencies, helping build an army of true believers. those celebs now facing criticism after amateur investors, some who poured their life savings into the unstable investments are facing mounting losses. take, for example, the largest cryptocurrency, bitcoin, back in

january one bitcoin would have cost you more than $47,000 but today it's worth less than half of that. plunging by a staggering 25% in just the last week. other cryptos like ethereum facing the same fate, slammed more than 70% this year. as risky assets become less popular amid a market selloff -- >> it's highly speculative. it is not appropriate for the average investor. when the market started to go down people kind of panicked, so they started to sell and that's kind of what happens. >> reporter: one of the largest crypto lenders celsius networks temporarily freezing customer withdrawals preventing customers like mike washburn from getting his money back. he has $100,000 in a celsisus account he now can't access. >> i couldn't sleep. you know, i felt sick, nauseous. that money was going to go

back one generation looking at the activity level of teenagers, following it for 30 years and then assessing their cognitive function in mid-life so in their 30s and 40s and not too surprising, they found that kids who were really active when they were teens did well on cognitive tests in their 30s and 40s, however, and here are the caveats, remember, this study is based on association and observation, not cause and effect, but you've heard me say it before. what is good for the heart is good for the brain and vice versa and this study supports that. >> all right, speak to parents. kids are attached to screens all the time. seems like it's harder to get them moving. some advice? >> try to put those screens down. step away from that. the more active the better. the recommendations which most kids and teenagers are not getting, 60 minute, t.j., one hour of vigorous physical activity every single day. remember we can't neglect our muscle and bone strengthening, so resistance, weight training is also important.

>> memories. memories. he was getting more and more frightening as time went by where he just was like rebelling. >> reporter: for priscilla, here in memphis outside graceland, where she and elvis lived as husband and wife, austin butler's performance in the title role and the film itself evoking some powerful emotions. >> austin was just unbelievable. as i was watching it actually and during it, this is a movie that he would have really loved. showing who he was, what he was striving for, what his dreams were. >> reporter: priscilla would watch as actress olivia dejonge played her. >> i am your wife. >> reporter: in times of contentment with elvis and days before their divorce. >> it's so strange, it really is when someone is playing you, i'm so happy that she was sensitive and that she was caring and that, you know, she was a little strong with him as well and, you know, i thought she did a really, really nice job. i was pleasantly surprised.

you always want to do an extra mile. >> reporter: his family always coming first raising four children with his high school sweetheart just celebrating their 39th wedding anniversary. >> he's a very selfless person. and he's very giving to everybody. i couldn't have picked a better person. >> so my dad grew up one of nine. there were 11 that lived in a two-bedroom house. they grew up with not a whole lot but a lot of love and a lot of family and i feel like he brought that into my immediate family. >> he's an incredible person to be around, infectious personality. i don't know what it is but when he laughs, everyone tends to laugh. >> my dad always eats last, so he will make all this dinner for all of us and he will sit there and wait for each person to go through the line and sit down and eat and make sure that they have enough food. >> it's still instilled to us day to day to just always be there for your family. he is the rock of our family for sure. >> all: happy father's day!
