moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. getting ready to vaccinate the youngest americans against coronavirus right now preparations are underway just days before the cdc is expected to officially sign off on vaccines for children under five. it is expected to happen this weekend. good evening, and thank you for joining us on dionne lim and i'm dan ashley abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes explains. what's expecting next and how local officials are getting ready? now that the fda has given that authorization the final step is to get a recommendation from the cdc director and that's expected to happen sometime this weekend and it's something local officials say they've been preparing for for months here in the county of santa clara. we are ready. that's the message to santa clara county public health officer put out as they
5:01 pm
announced plans to open three vaccination sites for kids five and under the shipments of vaccine may be arriving as early as monday if that were to happen, we would open appointments on monday afternoon and start first shot in arms on tuesday. the sites will be in san jose san martin and mountain view the county says they've also been working with major health care providers and private pediatricians to help facilitate vaccinations after a long wait. the news is a lot for some parents to process. i was relieved but at the same time, you know, of course, it's like, you know, it's safe or not and he's already vaccinated. he has other vaccines. so why not? i think it's gonna take some time for me to like just think about it and probably sit on it over the weekend dr. sarah redman is the counties assistant public health officer and mom of a two year old. i was reading every inch of the data that got released this week and i wouldn't feel as excited about vaccinating her if i hadn't seen the safety results that i did dr. redmond says that the side effects are the type that are to be expected from a

pediatric vaccine kids were fussy and cranky in their legs hurt, but on the other hand those are signs that vaccines are talking and a sign for me that that's really was a safe vaccine now again here in santa clara county officials are hoping for a monday arrival for the vaccines. they say that whenever they get here they can turn them around in 24 hours now to find out more information and to book an appointment when they're available. you can head to scc free vax.org in san jose zach fuentes abc 7 news san francisco will open another public school despite declining enrollment in the past few years the board voted on wednesday to build the first and only school in the mission bay neighborhood abc 7 news senior education reporter land melendez explains the districts justification for adding another school. this is the empty lot where the mission bay school will be housed. the land will be officially transferred to the san francisco unified school district in august a gift made by ucsf.
5:03 pm
the school will open in the fall of 2025. that means one-year-old. enzo will most likely be going into transitional kindergarten. i think it's a great news. and yes. he's a future here. so. you too, you know building a stronger. community ion bay the deal has been in the works for years in 2016. abc 7 news was there when the school district announced it would ask voters to fund it through a bond measure which eventually passed by nearly 80 percent matt haney now an assemblyman was a school board member back then over the next five years. we currently estimate that. there will be 1,300 new students from mission bay soma alone. i know many of you are thinking wait. that was 2016 isn't the school district now experiencing a decline in its enrollment. yes. citywide families have moved out. mission bay is one of those
5:04 pm
neighborhoods that continues to grow so we look at where the density of kids are right now and going to be it is mission bay. it is the eastern neighborhoods. it is the southeast right now families who live in the mission bay neighborhood are nearly two miles away from daniel webster elementary and bessie carmichael. so there's the convenience factor on the other hand. the school district assured us that by opening the school in mission bay those other two schools will not lose students. that's because as of today families in mission bay can ask to enroll in school in the city, but once the district moves to a zone-based system, they can only select those that are in close proximity the schools that are closest to mission bay right now will be the new mission bay school bessie carmichael and daniel webster. groundbreaking is scheduled for october in san francisco leanne melendez. abc 7 news. the nba champions are heading back home with some new

emancipation of enslaved african-americans, but since it falls on a weekend, the holiday will be recognized on monday. that's right reporter. cheryl burton talked with the 95 year old woman who spent years lobbying for the federal recognition. still pinch myself sometime. see if it really happened. for years oval lee has been fighting for juneteenth to become a federal holiday and in 2021 president biden signed it into federal law to be invited to the white house. to see juneteenth signed into law i was humbled. i tell you. i wanted to do a holy dance.
5:18 pm
but the kids say when i try that i'm twerking. but the wind did not come easily lee organized dozens of 2.5 mile walks to bring awareness to the two and a half years it took for the immense the patient proclamation to be enforced in texas. she and her team even rallied hundreds of thousands of people to sign a petition demanding, juneteenth. be made a federal holiday. we took a million 500,000 signatures to congress and we were ready to take that many more when we got the call to go to the white house. but lee says her work isn't finished yet an equity is still something she fights for daily. we oh the same thing. we want a decent place to stay a job that's going to pay us a decent wage. we won't schools.
5:19 pm
that actually teach our children. what really happened? or people don't know where they're going if they don't know where they came from. if we've been taught to hate. we can be taught to love. wonderful words. that was cheryl burton reporting and here in the bay area. there will be lots of events to commemorate juneteenth some actually begin today while others are on the weekend for more information. you can head to abc 7 news.com and dan we were all marveling at how great opal she's phenomenal. i love what she said spencer if we can be taught to think we can be taught to love. that's true. so inspiring yeah, her whole life is inspiring. yeah. take a look at what's happening with our weather. we've got some nice weather coming our way right now. it's a bit breezy outside as we look at the surface wind speeds. you can see we've got gusts up too and even above 25 miles per hour in some spots a nice

onshore flow bringing a cooling effect. so the 24-hour temperature change shows that most bay area locations are several degrees cooler right now than they were at this time yesterday. here's a nice view from sutro tower looking at some low mid-level clouds drifting out over san francisco where it is 62 degrees right now across the bay. but 65 mountain view 69. we've got 70 at both, san jose and santa clara 59 degrees at half moon bay lovely view looking toward the golden gate from emeryville. it's 65 right now both petaluma and santa rosa napa 67 70 at fairfield. we have upper 60s at concord and livermore and a nice view from rooftop camera. looking across the bay. we've got a mix of blue sky and a puffy cumulus clouds traveling over the bay. these are our forecast features bright and breezy again tomorrow and cooler than average again tomorrow, but it warming up on father's day sunday and continue into monday, which is juneteenth. so sunnier and warmer those two days and then triple digit heat will develop in our inland areas on tuesday and wednesday for the overnight hours.
5:21 pm
look for cloud traveling by a few high clouds and some low clouds near the coast and locally out over the bay as well, but we'll start the day with bright skies. it'll get sunny or as the day goes on tomorrow overnight lows will be generally in the low 50s little cooler on the coast upper 40s there and in the far north, we'll see mid to 40 so that'll be our chilliest region of the bay area tonight then tomorrow under mainly sunday skies and breezy conditions look for highs in the upper 50s on the coast. mainly upper 60s right around the bay shoreline, maybe 71 at san mateo and we'll see mid to upper 70s inland tomorrow. so a pleasant day, but certainly cooler than average for this time of the year. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast and notice that warm up. well before i get to the warm up, let's talk about father's day sunday sunny and warmer lovely day high temperatures upper 70s around the bay mid 80 england monday the federal holiday for juneteenth a mid-90s inland mid 80s around the summer begins at 2:13. m pacific daylight time on tuesday, and we're going to have some summer like heat with highs near 100 degrees in our inlet

5:26 pm
that character changed from being a toy to the actual human with the toy. it's plastic and with a human you have a lot more intricacies dean kelly is the story super. for light year. the film is a clever prequel rolling back time and imagining the human action hero light year whose exploits inspired the toy version of buzz instead of the iconic plastic figure animators work to add the nuances of a sometimes grumpy, but still supremely confident buzz was like your mission log planet clearly uninhabitable like he's thinking as early the you know, mid 30, so he's capable but he's got some experience there and he's got some like wisdom that's there and kelly has also found himself expanding on the human nature of a different character in the film lightyear sidekick alicia who shares a tender kiss with another female character a moment that caused a number of religiously conservative countries to censor the film or ban it outright.
5:27 pm
so to have that kiss in there felt like it was really important not only for the story but i felt like just where we are right now and you know in the world like we want to show like that's the truthfulness to where people are at right now the light year character also develops his own emotions as the galactic adventure evolves a journey that may help audiences appreciate this version of buzz as a new more complex kind of heroes socks. let's break this hyperspeed barrier get looks good. doesn't it is we mentioned the film is opening in theaters around the bay area disney of course is the parent company of both pixar and abc 7. well, that's it for this edition of abc 7 news at five world news tonight with david muir's next. i'm dion limb and i'm dan ashley for spencer christian all of us here. we appreciate your time. we will see you again in half an hour for abc 7 news at 6.
