and it's something local officials say they've been preparing for for months here in the county of santa clara. we are ready. that's the message to santa clara county public health officer put out as they announced plans to open three vaccination sites for kids five and under the shipments of vaccine may be arriving as early as monday if that were to been we would open appointments on monday afternoon and start first shot in arms on tuesday. the sites will be in san jose san martin and mountain view the county says they've also been working with major health care providers and private pediatricians to help facilitate vaccinations after a long wait. the news is a lot for some parents to process. i was relieved but at the same time, you know, of course, it's like, you know, it's safe or not and he's already vaccinated. he has other vaccines. so why not? i think it's gonna take some time for me. like just think about it and probably sit on it over the weekend dr. sarah redman is the counties assistant public health officer and mom of a two year old i was reading inch of the

hub of the underground railroad. and their role was to raise the money. so the money for the raid on harpers ferry, which was the precipitating event for the civil war. came from san francisco. john. templeton is known as the historian of black san francisco an african-american history through the west on the second year of juneteenth becoming a federal holiday. we sat down with him to speak about its meaning and it's the end of the civil war as a result of the courage and bravery of 209,145 us troops of african descent 25,000 of them were brought into texas beginning in 1863. and they were the ones who had the honor. of capturing the last confederate state to surrender. this will be san francisco's 72nd year celebrating, juneteenth. the city largest gathering of african-americans in northern

turned into a 200 acre burn and prompted mandatory. evacuations we did i think in a fairly significant way dodge a major bullet as the sun rose. you can not only see the damage caused, but what could have been up close doesn't tell the full story when you zoom out you can see this fire back right up to hundreds of homes hill says, it's an overwhelming message that fire season doesn't just happen in places like napa or the santa cruz mountains. it impacts everyone when you look at last year and now i think this year is starting to pretty much the same way the wind driven fires that damaged and destroyed homes and displaced residents happened in areas outside of those highest severity zones. in fact, this was the second grass fire in pittsburgh this week that put homes at risk hill says there were no injuries and no homes lost. he attributes this in part to the work of the community and hopes other seeing this story

but clouds are traveling by the rapidly across the bay assisted by the strong wind 61 degrees in san francisco right now, oakland 63 upper 60s at mountain view, san jose and santa clara 59 at half moon bay. and here's another view of those clouds from mountain looking down onto the tops of some of those class 63 right now at petaluminum, santa rosa 64, napa and fairfield both at 68 and we have 60s at concord and livermore and one more live view of the beautiful sky over the bay from our rooftop camera. these are our forecast features bright and breezy tomorrow and cooler than average once again then sunny or a warmer on father's day sunday and on june 10th monday, and then we can expect triple digit heat in our inlet areas on tuesday and wednesday as summer kicks off overnight look for a few clouds around so we'll call it partly cloudy away from the coast. mostly cloudy along the coast. it'll be breezy of course with overnight lows ranging from upper 40s to low 50s. much of the bay area and then tomorrow's highs 59 half moon bay 65 san francisco. mainly upper 60s around the bay

shore line, maybe one or two locations will hit 70 like san mateo and inland areas will warm up to only mid 70s. here's the accuweather 74 forecast a sunny and warmer day on sunday for father's day, june 10th sunshine warming up to mid-90s and mid 80s around the bay tuesday marks the beginning of summer 213 am if you're going to be up to celebrate it it's going going to be really toasty with inlet. is tuesday and wednesday at or above 100 degrees in the warmest spots, but we'll start to see a little bit cooler trend beginning on thursday and by next friday temperatures will be back in that average seasonal range deion. i appreciate your precision spencer. all right. thank you. well, we are working to build a better bay area which means focusing on how we can improve this place. we call home this year. we are putting an extra emphasis on the tenderloin district of san francisco. you may remember in january the city opened what it called a linkage center meant to link people dealing with drug abuse with resources, including food

shelter and substance abuse treatment it formed after mayor london breed declared a state of emergency in the tenderloin last year, but the center will close by the end. of this year, so we are joined live by abc 7 news insider phil mateer on this topic phil right away. why exactly is the center closing? i mean i can imagine for a myriad of reasons was it ineffective was there not enough money. i mean it seemed so promising it did but it hasn't proven to be as promising as hoped. it got to be honest about it deon. this thing is costing them over a million dollars a month and the results just haven't been that great. it's just not cost effective. let's take for well, they've had 49,000 visits to the center that's people going in either looking for services or help or even a meal maybe or a place just to rest for a while. they've as a result of that 900 people have been put into shelters. 150 of it gotten permanent housing and 53 only 53 have gone into drug rehab and like i said

a cost of over a million dollars a month the mayor just feels that there's better ways to spend it. now. you have to that this was set up. when she declared a state of an emergency, and she was scrambling for something to put in the tenderloin and this is what she got, but it's not a long-term solution by any stretch of the imagination. yeah when you talk about that cost certainly does not seem to weigh up to that price tag, you know, what else could replace the center to help these people who need it. well, there are other buildings in the tenderloin that they're looking at right now trying to admit idea of possibly dispersing it now, there's a couple of things that have to be factored in one this center came in. as we were coming out of the covid and san francisco was just being shown around the world as a place of open-air drug dealing and drug use homelessness on the street this mayor felt like something had to be done now since then the city is trying to come back in this same neighborhood mid-market is trying to attract other people into it. it's got the theaters for san francisco down there.

it's got new apartment buildings. it's got businesses down there and they're not sure that they want a sinner that is dealing with these kind of problem. in their neighborhood, so she's going to probably move it to other areas disperse it out into other store fronts and there's a good chance that we're going to continue to see the use of drugs being sanctioned by the city at these new centers as well. you know, you touched upon something that i want to get to before i let you go. is that the mayor's 90-day state of emergency. she announced it using some very strong language did that actually make any lasting changes in the tenderloin? i know there has been criticism that some of the drug use etc has been pushed out to neighboring. parts of the city. yes, and that's valid but in the tenderloin itself, yes, i would say that recent visits there. it's a different world or a much better world than it was a year ago a year and a half ago what we're seeing is fewer tents on the streets. we have people out there on the sidewalks making sure that things are going smoothly. i don't know how long they can maintain it unless there's a

san francisco, but plans for a new school that you're looking at now are moving forward. the campus will be the first and only school in the mission bay neighborhood, but does it need it? yeah, we've seen reports of cleaning enrollment the past few years abc 7 news senior education reporter leanne melendez explains the district's justification for adding another school. this is the empty lot where the mission bay school will be housed. the land will be officially transferred to the san francisco unified school district in august a gift made by ucsf. the school will open in the fall of 2025. that means one-year-old. enzo will most likely be going into transitional kindergarten. i think it's a great news. and yes. he's a future here. so. yeah to you know building a strong. community in the mission bay the deal has been in the works for years in 2016 abc 7 news was there when the school district announced it would ask voters to

fund it through a bond measure which eventually passed by nearly 80 percent matt haney now an assemblyman was a school board member back then over the next five years. we currently estimate that. there will be 1,300 new students from mission bay soma alone. i know many of you are thinking wait, that was 2016 isn't the school district now experiencing a decline in its enrollment. yes. citywide families have moved out but mission bay is one of those neighborhoods that continues to grow so we look at where the density of kids are right now and where they're going to be it is mission bay. it is the eastern neighborhoods. it is the southeast right now families who live in the mission bay neighborhood are nearly two miles away from daniel web. elementary and bessie carmichael, so there's the convenience factor on the other hand. the school district assured us that by opening the school in mission bay those other two
