were here, somebody used a gun and a child is dead. >> at one point police broke up a fight but it's not clear what prompted the shooting. they say no officer fired their weapons. all three people who were wounded were in stable condition. now to the other major story this morning. the cdc has approved two covid-19 vaccines for children under 5 years old, kids in some states will get the shot as early as tomorrow. it's the news many parents have waited years for, but others remain hesitant about whether to vaccinate their children. with the vacowreen l, shots could be administered as early as today. >> nearly 20 million children are able to get vaccinated against covid-19. >> reporter: 18 million american children now eligible to receive it, new york city says it will start distributing the shot on wednesday. the shots come as a relief for

parents who have felt the need to isolate their unvaccinated children. >> we have a 4-year-old son and we've been living quite a sheltered life over the last two years trying to keep him safe, so this will give us a breathing room. >> reporter: they chose to enroll their then-8-month-old and their 3-year-old in the pfizer vaccine trial. >> i highly encourage all parents to vaccinate their young kids. it's really a peace of mind that you don't need to worry about this really potentially dangerous and potentially fatal disease for your young kids. >> reporter: but many parents are in no rush to get their kids the shot. an april survey found that fewer 1 in 5 parents say they're eager to vaccinate their child as soon as the shot became available. >> we're not that confident to make that decision. >> reporter: and many parents of children who have recently had covid are wondering whether it's even worth getting the shot.

pfizer tells abc news every child should get the shot because it adds extra protection against reinfection as well as serious complications. should they get infected again. >> we have to look at the data, it clearly shows that the benefits far outweigh any risks related to these vaccines. >> moderna said it's planning to test its covid vaccine in babies as young as 3 months starting in september. next, the economy and the growing fears of a looming american recession. the probability of a recession in the next 12 months at 30%, that's double the odds they gave it just three months ago. on abc's "this week," treasury secretary janet yellen echoed president biden who said a recession is not inevitable. >> i expect the economy to slow, it's been growing at a very rapid rate. it's natural now that we expect to transition to steady and stable growth.

i don't think a recession is at all inevertable. >> yellen also said the administration is considering a federal gas tax holiday, that would mean savings of about 18% per gallon at the pump. and for those filling up this morning, aaa said the average is just under $5. the price drop was caused by a slight decrease in demand. the head of nato is warning the west the war in ukraine could last for years. president zelenskyy is telling the country to brace for increased russian hostilities as ukraine moves closer to joining the european union. russia is stepping up attacks in donbas region. but ukrainian troops are now fighting back with additional u.s. fire power. howitzer artillery weapons. james longman was given exclusive access to the front lines. >> the power of that gun is just unreal, it sucks the air out of

they are finding russian targets. >> despite the fighting life goes on, in a show of resilience the opera has returned to the battered port city of odesa. now to the crush of travelers across the country. scenes like this played out at many airports. more than 18,000 flights were cancelled or delayed over th holiday weekend, with demand soaring to near pre-pademic level, the u.s. is not alone, this sea of luggage piled up at london's heathrow airport after the baggage system malfunction. abc's faith abubey. >> reporter: the airlines are blaming high demand, severe weather and staffing issues as these frustrations grow. this morning, more flights grounded across the u.s., but so far an improvement from a weekend of travel troubles. spending father's day and juneteenth stuck at airports from new york city to salt lake city.

>> it's frustrating. makes me feel powerless. stuck in an airport. basically for two days. >> reporter: the airline woes forcing some travelers to miss family celebrations like weddings and baby showers. >> people are just upset. a lot of people were crying. >> reporter: since friday about 3,000 flights have been cancelled due to bad weather mixed in with the existing problems of airline staffing shortage and high travel demand. united grounding dozens of flights. delta seeing the worst of it, cancelling more than 200 flights sunday alone. concern growing as vacation season heats up. transportation secretary pete buttigieg putting pressure on airlines to address issues. including hiring more staff. buttigieg also warning that the u.s. government could take enforcement actions against airlines that fail to adhere to consumer protection standards. >> we're doing everything we can, including trying to get in

touch earlier and more often with our passengers and then again trying to hire more people back. >> reporter: mona, analysts predict that travel issues will continue throughout the summer. one analyst putting it bluntly saying, quote, the summer of 2022 is going to be travel hell. mona. >> faith, thank you. new questions about the police response to the uvalde school shooting. sources tell abc news that surveillance shows police said never tried to open the doors to the two classrooms where the gunman killed 19 students and two teachers. had access to a tool that could have opened the doors. senators working on a bipartafety bill meanwhile wrapped up another day of negotiations without finalizing the text. sources say talks are still moving in the right direction and they have until tomorrow to write the bill if they want any chance of vetting on it before the two-week july 4th recess. time now for a look at your monday morning weather.

back now with the burning boat off the coast of new hampshire. the three people who lived on board lost everything. they suffered minor injuries and their two dogs are fine. all of them were brought to safety by a good samaritan. it is unclear how the fire started. questions surrounding the attack on the mayor of louisville caught on camera. video shows a man walking up to the mayor greg fisher saturday and punching him. knocking the 64-year-old to the ground. the suspect is still on the loose. concern have been raised surrounding the mayor's security detail. one of his former body guards said fisher may have opted for less protection. >> most of those people, it's been my experience, do not want a waffle security around them. like an invincible bubble. they want to be successible to the public or to their fans,
