who died and the new images and information coming to light is only adding to that frustration. this morning, new questions about the police response to the school shooting in uvalde, texas. a newly released image taken from surveillance video inside the school shows some of the first officers in the hallway were armed with rifles and ballistic shields. >> in the minds of some people who are reviewing the evidence in this case would have given officials enough ability to take down that shooter. >> reporter: a reporter with our austin affiliate watched the video. he says it shows officers by 11:52 a.m. but law enforcement did not breach the classroom until 12:50. over that nearly hour span at least six 911 calls were made from inside the classroom. >> keep in mind that almost an hour passed before they then went inside that classroom and found the bodies of those 19 children and 2 teachers. >> reporter: according to police

radio transcripted obtained by "the texas tribune," some of the officers wanted to enter the hallway but were not cleared to. one officer saying, if there are kids in there, we need to go in there. another officer replying, whoever is in charge will determine that. it comes as the community of uvalde calls for more transparency during the investigation. at last night's school board meeting many called for school district police chief pete arredondo to resign. >> the thing that i can't wrap my mind around is how is mr. arredondo still with the program? how is he still employed? >> reporter: chief arredondo defended his handling of the shooting saying he thought someone else had taken control of the scene. arredondo says he and the other officers in the hallway were looking for a key to the classroom after trying to open the door, but the surveillance video reportedly does not show anyone trying to open the door and the officers had a forcible entry tool used by firefighters.

the public also heard from the children of irma garcia, one of the teachers who died and whose husband died of a heart attack days later. >> i would like to share a quote of one of my little sister's agonizing cries, she said, my mom died protecting her students, but who was protecting my mom? this will always haunt me and should always haunt all of you. >> as for police chief pete arredondo, he's previously said, quote, not a single responding officer ever hesitated to put themselves at risk to save the children. the families may get some answers today when the head of the texas department of public safety testifies at a hearing. the other big story this morning is the january 6th committee. that hearing is today. it will focus on former president trump's pressure campaign to get state officials to overturn results of the 2020 election. it comes as we're also hearing from former vice president mike pence about his current relationship with trump. abc's faith abubey is here with the details. faith, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, rhiannon.

the committee says it has new evidence showing former president trump corruptly pressured state legislators and officials to change election results. today a new chapter in the january 6th committee's effort to show that former president donald trump knowingly pushed election fraud lies that ultimately led to this violent attack on the u.s. capitol. committee members say today's hearing will detail evidence of the elaborate scheme to push state officials to reject the 2020 presidential election results and instead create fake pro-trump electors to illegally hand trump a second term. >> i certainly think the president is guilty of knowing what he did, seditious conspiracy. >> reporter: representative adam schiff set to lead today's hearing telling cnn the trump campaign scheme unsuccessfully depended on hopes that state legislatures would approve the big lie. when they didn't trump turned to

pressuring state officials. >> yes, we'll show evidence of the president's involvement in this scheme. >> reporter: republican arizona house speaker rusty bowers and two georgia election officials including secretary of state brad raffensperger set to testify. >> of course, he was the secretary of state of georgia that donald trump famously called on january 2nd saying, go out and find me 11,780 votes. just happened to be precisely the number of votes that he would would have needed to have won georgia. >> all i want to do is this, i just want to find 11,780 votes. >> reporter: today the committee also expected to spotlight the, quote, heroes in the story who remained true to their oaths like former georgia election worker shaye moss. moss writing in her opening statement that she's been harassed and threatened all because trump and his allies, quote, refused to accept the outcome of the election. the people responsible for the lies need to be held accountable. in a new interview with fox news former vice president mike pence

called january 6th a tragic day while blasting democrats for the he also revealed that he and former president trump parted very amicably. that's a quote, and he says that they have gone their separate ways over the last year. rhiannon. >> faith, thank you so much for that. our live coverage of today's hearing begins at 1:00 p.m. eastern. president biden says he could decide this week whether to suspend the federal gas tax. the move, which would still need approval from congress, would save drivers about 18 cents per gallon. critics point out funding from the gas tax helped pay for bridge and road repairs. if you're flying instead of driving, a new warning about air traffic control staffing. the ceo of united airlines says staff shortages left busy airports including newark liberty airport staffed at only 50%. the faa insists there is no systemwide shortage. now to that rescue on a sidewalk in new york. a taxi jumping the curb, plowing into a crowd. we are now hearing from the bystanders who joined together

to lift that taxi off the victims. wabc's josh einiger has more. >> reporter: in mere moments, this quiet holiday afternoon was consumed by chaos and carnage. >> honestly the gruesomest thing you've ever seen. >> reporter: after an out-of-control cab launched onto the sidewalk mowing down pedestrians, their mangled bodies pinned underneath. >> a remarkable scene took place. about 15 to 20 new yorkers attempted to pick that cab off these women. >> there was no brake marks on the ground. >> reporter: marcus was among the crowd of new yorkers seen here working together to free one of the women pinned by the cab. both tourists, they were suffering grievous injuries. >> the lady that was in the front of the car, that lady was really, really under the car. even though maybe we started moving it, but definitely wasn't a one-man job.

there was a team and thank god for those people. >> reporter: police say the cab driver had been turning and did have the right of way when a man on this city bike rode into his path causing a collision. cops believe the cabbie then panicked and hit the gas instead of the brake sending the taxi rocketing onto the sidewalk. >> i've never seen anything like that, so it was very shocking and, you know, you feel for the people around you. >> two minutes later it would have been us. >> reporter: as for the pedestrians the cab mowed down on the sidewalk behind me, the two with the worst injuries are both tourists. one of them lost a leg right here on the scene. the other spent hours in surgery as doctors tried to save her leg. in midtown josh einiger, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> our thanks to josh for that report. time now for a look at your tuesday weather. good morning. as we usher in the summer season, we've got sweltering

the door. the video declares a hunt by the quote, maga crew for so-called members in name only. facebook has already pulled the video and twitter is restricting with it a warning. the missouri order of police says he does not possess the sound judgment necessary to represent the state. missouri senate majority leader, a republican, tweeting this response. anyone with multiple accusations of abuse toward women and children should probably steer clear of this rhetoric. reference to claim of violence levelled by his ex-wife, claims the candidate denies. his campaign manager dismisses the outrage over the video saying if anyone doesn't get the metaphor, they're either lying or dumb. but critics say it is the latest concern of violence of politics mixing with violence. adam kinsinger revealed this weekend that he received a threatening letter following his work on the january 6th committee. >> this threat that came in.

young son unattended inside a car in the driveway of their houston home as temperatures approached 100 degrees. investigators say the mom was rushing to prepare a birthday party for her daughter and accidentally left her 5-year-old behind. >> she's excited trying to get things together, and unfortunately this time the child didn't make it out. >> reporter: according to police the boy knew how to unbuckle himself and get out of the family's car and the mother may have assumed that he did, but the family car was being worked on at the time, and the mom was driving a loaner vehicle, which may have been a factor. >> perhaps the child wasn't as familiar with it, the door did not have any kind of child safety lock enacted or anything like that. >> reporter: police say it was only two to three hours until the mother realized where her son was, but they say that was more than enough time for the heat to take his life. an average of 38 children lose their lives in hot car deaths in the u.s. each year.
