concerned, and people around here are on edge. police telling us the shooting had nothing to do with pride. >> police were alerted after shots were heard. reporter: that is the san francisco supervisor who represents the district. forensic investigators were brought in. the shooter was seen leaving the station. police gave a brief description of who they are looking for.

were left. a man came to this home where he shot another man dead in the street. his three young children came out to find the father dead. they say the loved one was a good person. they do not know how he may have been connected to the shooter. hours later, the suspect took another life. >> we received calls last night. reporter: a man the family says she was romantically involved with. family did not want to be identified. >> she had a big heart. a wonderful mother. for this to happen to her.

reporter: pd says the shooter led a police chase in san jose with the woman and two children in the car. >> this was a violent, armed individual. reporter: he would drop off the passengers before barricading himself. the stand up and violently seven hours later. the suspect exited the shed, holding a firearm. you can hear officers. police say it appears he knew the victims and was involved. >>

identities will be released later this week. larry: a bipartisan gun safety bill could come up for a vote in the senate. the legislation cleared an initial procedural vote last night after weeks of negotiation. senate leaders voiced their support today. >> last night, the process began on the floor. 64 senators agreed to get on the bill. we're a few days away from passing the first major gun safety bill in 30 years. >> this time is different. this time democrats came our way and agreed to advance some common sense solutions. larry: the bill calls for enhanced background checks for buyers under the age of 21, it closes the loop holes.

reporter: what sounded like an explosion at 2:30 p.m. that day, then they lost power. >> i heard a big boom. reporter: we asked. >> any idea? >> i have investigators right now working hard on determining the cause of the fire. reporter: yesterday's close call is the reason why today they are better prepared. >> running around and trying to get what you think is right. that's not going to happen to me again. reporter: it took firefighters about six hours to control this fire. this could be a completely different story.
