building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. new details tonight about a shooting on a san francisco muni train that left one person dead and another injured police are revealing. they have a person of interest in the case. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm on a date. so let's get right to abc 7 news reporter. tim johns live in the newsroom with the latest tim. yeah. i'm the shooting took place just before 10 am inside the train which was traveling between the forest hill and castro stations the suspect took off when the train pulled into the station now just in the past hour san francisco police released this photo of an individual they are calling a person of interest they say this image is from video of the incident investigators are asking the person or anyone who knows them to come forward and speak with officers. now. i was out at the castro station this evening and spoke to some

for help the screaming for he was screaming for help. you could tell just the sound and the emotion in his voice that that there was something definitely wrong, and he was slapping the water. i wasn't sure if that was. some sort of thing that he was trying to get something away from him or just trying to draw attention to himself. they raced to reach the man seen in this surveillance video struggling in the water. they then rushed him to shore on their paddle boards. they're training kicked in. he's the sacramento police officer. she's a nurse as a police officer. i respond to emergencies all the time. so i don't think there was ever a question of whether or not we were go it's just how fast we were going to be able to get there officials. say the victim suffered major injuries to his stomach and his leg. we had to quickly cut his wet suit off of him and open it all up and then try to you know, play the tourniquets to each limb and also tooth abdomen put the pressure there because he was bleeding severely police deployed a drone over the water searching for the shark but no additional sightings have been

still creeping dangerously close to some homes. it's unclear. how the fire started. all right. so let's check on our weather conditions meteorologist. handya patel has that for us? and yeah, i'm a conditions near that fire actually much better with the humidity rising and the temperature is falling winds have been light, but i do want to show you what we have been tracking with live doppler 7 that brought the potential for dry lightning and new fire starts thunderstorms have been erupting to our south and east. this is all an association with monsoon moisture as you take a look here around the monterey county. edo county areas strong thunderstorms just a cluster of them last several hours just stalled out there didn't quite move and then started to peter out here in the bay area certainly saw a few sprinkles in the east bay a lot of cloud cover and as we take you into the next really through tomorrow morning, you will notice the potential is there still for a few sprinkles, but the thunder threat as we head into tomorrow,

we'll be shifting off to the east i'll be back with a look at the forecast coming right up alma. all right, sandy. thank you. you public pools are a big draw, especially on hot summer days like what we've had this week but public pools and beaches across the country are facing a problem a lifeguard shortage abc 7 news reporter unser hudson has the details from walnut creek. the public pool at lucky parking on the creek is one way to escape this week's heat, but there's just one problem the life right shortage here in walnut creek. we are not ical but we are here in houston martin is a recreation program manager for the city of walnut creek to operate at full capacity. she needs up to 120 life guards. she only has 97, but walnut creek isn't the only city facing a life guard shortage. problem is national this week the american lifeguards association issued a statement saying that there's a critical shortage of lifeguards in the us. it says it will impact one-third of swimming pools and beaches across the country. we used to run classes with a

couple instructors up to 20 students. and right now we're really at a one to eight to one to 10 ratio for a lifetime classes. the pandemic closed pools lifeguard certification courses were canceled. so no new guards were trained and certifications when we knew martin says has staff who started cool and work past college, but even that's changed with covid they they were with us and then with the great resignation a lot of our staff are being able they're able to move on and get those career jobs like megan wadman. i've been a lifeguard for seven years, but wadmit was also a pool manager is heading to nursing school in the fall. i love this job. it's a great job to have and i'm very excited to start my nursing career. so when that does hit i'm gonna be kind of focusing a little bit more on that fewer lifeguards me swim classes and events get canceled martin one floor to park to be opened year round but because of the shortages it just opened in april for parents safety becomes an issue. my son just starts misses the summer. so safety is obviously concerned

then around 9:20 police believe that same suspect killed a woman in modesto after the two murders police. say the shooter led a chase back into san jose with a woman and two children in the car firing several shots throughout the pursuit. he dropped off the passengers before barricading himself in the backyard shed of a home for several hours. the suspect exited the shed that he was barricaded in holding a firearm pointed it at our special operations personnel. the modesto victim has been identified as 29 year old michelle rose gonzalez. her family says she was romantically involved with the suspect. she leaves behind a six-month-old son and a nine year old daughter. please say the identities of the suspect and the victim in san jose will be released later this week. new details on a bart train derailment single track service in the area will continue tomorrow bart says passengers should add 5 to 15 minutes to their trips between the pleasant hill and concord stations. yesterday a train headed to san

while she's in this an update ny the abc 7 news i-team has been following the man in charge of paying out nearly 70,000 survivors of wildfires caused by pg&e is stepping down from the job retired justice. john trotter will be leaving his post as trustee of the fire victim trust at the end of the month when his two-year commitment ends the butte county board of supervisors sent trotter a letter last month sharing complaints about a lack of communication and minimal payments that have left some victims of the campfire living on. streets that wildfire destroyed the town of paradise as well as other parts of butte county in 2018. the county is pushing for more transparency about what's happening to the fire victim's money. new at 11 police in redwood city are alerting the public about a possible mountain lion seen today in the area of turnsworth avenue and edgewood road. no attacks have been reported but several people reported seeing the big cat san mateo counties animal control has not

confirmed that the animal was a mountain lion. e area a encouer a in mo ln, pets inside stay indoors and call 911. liday push is underway to alert bay area residents about the dangers of fireworks, especially in light of our ultra dry conditions today contra costa county first responders used a chartered hillside in pittsburgh to get the message across authorities. say fireworks were to blame for this blaze that burned 121 acres and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes and burned but the danger is real with the amount of dry vegetation. we're currently experiencing from the drought over the once it's proven. we've seen time and time again this year that the fires are quickly getting very large rapidly and out of control. contra costa county is a fireworks free zone meaning all fireworks. even those labeled safe and sane are illegal the county also passed an ordinance last year in which people can be held liable

if illegal fireworks are used on their property. this week in shasta county camp cinder opened its doors once again to young girls interested in firefighting out of 200 applicants from northern california 31 girls were selected for the training program now funded through cal fire the five-day program will train in fire and fighting wildfires structure fires operating a helicopter and rescue operations. we'll also provide information on how the girls can pursue a career in the male-dominated field. so we want people who think differently right if everybody thinks the same then you only have approach to a problem, but if we have people with different backgrounds and experiences and ways of thinking then we're going to do a better job. currently only 6% of cal fires crew are women cal fire says as wildfires continue to increase throughout the state. so does the demand for trained firefighters and we need all the personnel we can get especially when it's been this hot sandia. yeah, and especially when we're looking at year-round fire dangerama. let me show you where the

thunderstorm threat will shift tomorrow. it's going to be primarily over the eastern portion of the state. so even though we have the thunder threat lingering into the the early morning hours here locally. most of that action will be heading off to the east as you take a look here monterey bay sought numerous lightning strikes as still a strike there showing up east of hollister things have quieted down for the most part, but i have to say even though there was dry and wet thunderstorms. the good thing is we didn't see any new fires develop about a half an inch of rain fell in greenfield just to the north and east of soledad you're looking at a third to four tenths of an inch of rain that certainly to lessen the fire danger, but will still watching thisn live we' seen a few sprinkles in the east bay. we've also noticed that it's been feeling a little muggy across parts of the bay area san carlos. the dew point is 59 50 to 59 degrees is usually muggy for us. we're not used to this. it's going to remain that way at least through tomorrow morning
