kumasi: a really active night of weather. this is lightning striking south of san jose. drew is tracking what we will be seeing. reggie: good morning, is june 23. drew: we are starting out with fog returning to the coast and bay shoreline. the following are coast this morning. elsewhere, we're doing fine. we have warmer temperatures in the 60 this morning. in the east bay the warmest temperature. there is the fog along the coast filling into the east bay. we will keep the fog along our coast throughout the day. that create a wide range of temperatures today. 70's and 80's on the shoreline. let's look at these afternoon highs coming up in about nine minutes. reggie: cruiser cleaning up a

big flood. water main broke sending water flooding onto the street. jobina is tracking them for us. jobina: this happened on monument boulevard. let's get to the video so you can see impact. it shows water gushing out of the ground causing monument boulevard to flood. this area has a lot of businesses and homes. there are reports the water caused monument to buckle. we don't know the extent of the damage were caused, but if you use monument boulevard, you will want to use a different route. we expect this to cause backups. kumasi: san francisco police need your help finding a person of interest in a shooting on a train yesterday. this is what investigators released of the person connected to a shooting that left one person dead. ryan is joining us with more on the sophistication. brian?

-- ryan? ryan: that person fled following the shooting. that was between forest hill station and castro station. he fled on scene before police arrived. that is when they found the victims. that photo was released about the person of interest. that is somebody who they say is connected to this incident. did not say he is a suspect, but someone connected to this dent. mages from that incident. the only description they gave is a man and a hooded jacket, no race description. the shooting happened on a train from forceful station station. this happened during an altercation on the train. the suspect then fled the train. one person is dead, another went to the hospital after being injured.

some passengers are saying they are nervous about taking the train. >> i thought about it, but i have to come over here. >> and the unknown race mail wearing dark clothes and a hooded jacket. ryan: this appears to be an isolated incident, not hate crime. it happened between any altercation between people on the train. it is pride month and this community is on edge following what happened at castro station. they are not listing this as a hate crime or anything toward the community. that person of interest photo, hoping anybody can come forward with information. live in san francisco, ryan curry. reggie: happening today, the next hearing for the committee investigating the january 6 attack on the capital. this will focus on how trump

be the case here. reggie:ut0asngha several were treated for minor injuries. there is no estimate when that will be fixed. kumasi: some vacaville residents are back home after a grass fire force evacuations. residents were told to get up yesterday afternoon. cal fire says one fire grew to 110 acres and is 90% contained. a fire burning close to homes in san mateo county is now 80% contained. evacuations have been contained near edgewood park. because cause of this fire is underestimation. reggie: summer session classes are canceled at -- canceled at stanford university as they worked to restore power to campus. the edgewood fire is keeping crews from accessing in the where repairs are needed. power has been out since tuesday after pg&e equipping failure that appears to have coincided with the fire.

drew: take you look at this, overnight lightning strikes were seen in gilroy. others reported seeing lightning in the pittsburgh area. across california yesterday, there were more than 50,000 lightning strikes. most were in the central valley.

kumasi: developments on lowell high school's policies, they decided to return to a merit-based system. this will go into effect fall 2023. this is after they changed to a lottery system because of the pandemic and to improve diversity. the move played a critical role in the recall of the three wood and led to a lawsuit. the board also decided to create a task force for examining admissions policies to get community input and make recommendations. reggie: abc7 is proud to be celebrating pride month. i am honored to be one of the hosts this year for the parade. i got to host another type of discussion within our community, our allies in action roundtable which focused on challenges queer youth and their families face everyday. data shows the community is growing with more young people identifying as lgbtq plus than

ever before. all panelists agree there is so much about the community remains misunderstood. >> i have two trans kids so this is a relevant question for me. you are not seeing who they want to sleep with, you are seeing who they are. gender is not in the pants, it is in the brain. >> i've a friend that runs the london school for beginnings in the bay area. one of their practices is asking people what their pronouns are, asking the students what their pronouns are everyday. that gives the kids a chance to say actually i'm going to try these pronouns or these are the ones that work for me for this is the name that fits for me this day for this week or this year. reggie: they went on to say if that challenges you, think about why.

75 in santa cruz. the fog not only stays along the coast, it spills back into the bay shoreline. we drop into the 50's overnight. tomorrow for the weekend, if you are headed to the city, especially on sunday, it is nice. we have the morning fog giving a way to sunshine. temperatures topping out in the low 70's by sunday afternoon. will cool off, relatively speaking, through the first of the weekend. it is nice for the parade and became a wide range of temperatures through next week. reggie: this is giving flight attendant. drew: may be a little looser, not choking you. reggie: new details in a frightening plane crash. american airlines retired the 32-year-old plan in 2014 and was sent to a plane graveyard in new mexico. then it got sold to a budget airline in south america and was allowed to fly into the u.s.. the landing gear failed after a touchdown, sparking a fire. the plane was carrying 140 people, seven people were

sunshine away from the coast, it creates the wide range of temperatures. we will look at how warm we get this afternoon in about nine minutes. reggie: san francisco police are looking for a man who killed a person and wounded another on a train yesterday. we have surveillance images. this is a person of interest according to police. ryan curry is at the union station this morning. ryan: they search is still on for the person who entered two people, killing one of them and injuring the other. that person came to castro station following the shooting on the train coming from forest hill station. that is when he fled before officers arrived. police releasing images on the train of a person of interest. they are not labeling this person as a suspect. again, just a person of

interest. they said the suspect they're looking for is going for a drug could jacket, no race identified. the shooting does appear to not be a hate crime, instead being in a isolated incident. they have plenty of surveillance footage they have gathered and that has been handed over to the police department. >> we do have high-quality cameras not only on our trains, but we have cameras and air stations as well. ryan: those high-quality cameras capturing that person of interest on the train. they are not listing that person is a suspect. the person they're looking for they described as a man in a dark hooded jacket. the names of the victims have not been released. train service to castro station was suspended yesterday while they continued the investigation. they were able to restart the

train service throughout the evening. they do expect to be normal service that they are still looking for the person of interest. they have not labeled that person is a suspect but that person is still at large and they have not found him. anybody with information, they are asking them to come forward. reggie: -- kumasi: and redevelopment --a new development in the uvalde school shooting. the police chief is off the job. this is after demanding more transparency. jobina: some people are demanding the school police chief resigned as the story about what happened continues to change. it was just revealed chief pete arredondo entered the school minutes after the government but investigators say it took more than an hour for him and his officers to go into the classroom where 19 students and two teachers were murdered. parents argue that law enforcement should be held partly accountable for the tragedy.

the superintendent announced pete arredondo was placed on administered of leave. >> he should never be allowed to work again in law enforcement. jobina: he said he did not consider himself in charge at the time of the shooting as multiple other agencies were responding. now a state senator is suing the department of public safety after the agency denied his request for records related to the shooting. the texas department of health safety did not respond -- of public safety did not respond. reggie: to manage charge of distributing settlement money to 70,000 wildfire survivors is stepping down. just as john trotter will be leaving his post as trustee of the viral -- the fire victim trust. the board of supervisors assured complaints about lack of communication and minimal

payments that left some victims of the camp fire living on the streets. that wildfire destroyed paradise and other parts of the county and 2018 -- other parts of butte county in 2018. kumasi: fourth of july is less than two weeks away and first responders are encouraging everyone to be careful with fireworks. contra costa first responders used a charred hillside to get that message across. fireworks were to blame for this fire that burned 121 acres and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes. >> with the dry vegetation we are experiencing, we are proving damaged up again the fires are quickly getting very large rapidly and out of control. kumasi: contra costa county is a fireworks free zone. all fireworks are illegal.

reggie: nurses in daly city be back on the picket line. they say poor working conditions are affecting them and their patients. they said the hospital runs out of clean linens, oxygen, and surgery supplies. they say they are shortages that affect procedures with nurses asked to do more than one job at a time. >> there has not been a change.

it is getting worse. >> we are looking for a contract to -- routine of nurses and i don't think they are providing that. reggie: the california nurses association has been in negotiations since december. a hospital administrator says they are appointed -- they are disappointed the union decided to strike. san francisco police chief says violent attacks will not be tolerated during the pride parade thursday -- parade saturday. >> we want people to enjoy themselves. our officers will be out there and a uniform throughout the parade route. our job is to try to keep these events safe so people can enjoy them so people can do what they do safely. when we bolster progress that line, we need to take action. reggie: 17 officers were injured

the night you won the championship. a man from hayward faces charges in a case of detonating an explosive device. kumasi: public pools and beaches across the country are facing a problem because there is a lifeguard shortage. the city of walnut creek needs up to 100 20 walk -- 120 lifeguards to operate at full capacity. that means swim classes and events are canceled. >> we used to run classes with a couple of instructors. no we are at a one to eight ratio. kumasi: official stated pandemic close pools and lifeguard certification courses were canceled. new guards were not trained and certifications were not renewed. walnut creek is holding a certification course in july hoping to attract more candidates. starting pay is $70 per hour.

in shasta county, cap center opened its doors to young women interested in firefighters. 31 girls were selected for the training program. now funded through calfire, this program will train firefighters, wildfires, and rescue operations. it will provide information in how girls can pursue a career in this male-dominated field. >> we want people who three differently. if we have people with different backgrounds and experiences and ways of thinking, we will do a better job. kumasi: only 6% of calfire crews are women currently. as wildfires continue to increase, so does the demand for trained firefighters. the program says it is aiming to build confidence and encourage more women to join the firefighting field. reggie: a high-stakes emergency meeting on gas prices today. members of the biden administration urging ceos of oil companies to take action to

loyal -- to lower oil prices. president biden has been critical of will companies for raking in profits but not helping production. the push for more green energy is making -- chevron's ceo says the white house is wrongly vilifying oil. >> the fact that the president cannot control the price of gasoline and we need more players at the table. reggie: the national gas average is under five dollars per gallon. the same is true in the bay area. the average is $6.49 in san francisco. fighting is called on congress to suspend the federal gas tax three months which would save drivers around $.18 per gallon. jerome powell is giving a second day of remarks on capitol hill.
