refinery. firefighters so far have not said how many acres of brush have burned. so far, no evacuations. >> another fire has kept fire crews quite busy. this one is burning in a heavily wooded canyon in the alameda county community of signal, which is near pleasanton. initial reports are that it is starting in a building this afternoon. flames rapidly jumped into the dry brush and trees soon after, where evacuation orders are in effect. abc seven news reporter is live in pleasanton, where he just spoke with residents. reporter: good afternoon, and pleasanton behind me is golden eagle estate country club. pleasanton police tell me the entire neighborhood is being evacuated because the fire is starting to come down the hill. now, it is hot out here. not as hot as it has been, but there is a slight breeze and we know if the wind picks up how quickly the situation can change
4:01 pm
pretty here is what we know. this started as a brush fire on top of the mountain ridge sometime after 2 p.m., so it has been burning for more than two hours. more than 50 acres have burned according to calfire. this is the woods area. as the fire grew, it spread to the other side of the hill. that is where a structure caught higher. at this point, officials do not know what that structure is. there have been aerial drops over the last hour and i am also told pg and ee crews are out here as well. there is a power line that went down. the foothill area sees a lot of traffic during this time of day. roads are blocked getting into the neighborhood could we spoke to some people who were being evacuated. here's what they have to say. >> the police officers came and they asked us to evacuate, which we did. down the hill, i can see the fire, so -- reporter: were there any homes on fire? >> no homes on fire, there was a lot of snow. >> i was coming home from
4:02 pm
fremont and as we were coming to the canyon, we saw billows and billows of smoke. it look like it was by our house, so i said step on it. we came as fast as we could and then we could see that it was probably up on the ridge. so it came down, they stop this at vernell and i had to walk all the way in, because i could not get here. reporter: the evacuation order has again been issued for residents as well as those at the golden eagle estate committee. i was told by police if the fire comes closer, anymore closer down the hill, the residents of the castlewood area may be evacuated as well. we will continue to monitor this throughout the rest of the evening. reporting live, abc7news. >> if there are additional evacuations, we will keep you posted. this map from sona haven shows you the evacuations for the canyon fired near interstate in single. the red is an evacuation order
4:03 pm
and the yellow, that is an evacuation order. in the blue is an advisory telling people to be on alert. >> yet another wildfire has led to an evacuation order in solano county. again, this is the fourth fire burning right now in the bay area. let's take a look at this time lapse video. this is of the fire, centered near playa vista lane. it has burned at least 15 acres and there is no word on containment. a solano county office of emergency services is warning residents today in the area to leave their homes and businesses now, because of the fire danger. thousands of pg&e customers in the area are also without power. all right, let's get to abc7news meteorologist mike nicco with more on the situation. the wind is playing a role in all of these. mike: the wind and it is the wind that brings us different levels of concerns. good afternoon, everybody. let's take a look at sky 7. deport a cost of fire, you can see them trying to put a rim
4:04 pm
around that of higher retardant. the closer you are to the strait, which is this fire, also the one in venetia and the one in vacaville, the reason i am more concerned is because the wind never stops in the straight this time of year. now, if you go down to the use and all area, the wind will start to back down a little bit during the evening hours. in fact, 12 to 19 miles per hour. we could jump up to 20, but we slow down a little bit around the 10 mile per hour the big concern is if the fire gets into the treetops, we could have an ember hopping and that could drop embers right into pleasanton. something could happen in port acosta. it would have to drop completely over the straight, but it could drop into venetia thanks to these winds blowing at 21 to 23, which means they could move if they take a more northerly trajectory, down towards martinez and some of those refineries. the wind here, this is what i am
4:05 pm
talking about. how they never slow down this time of year. we are going to get up to 22, but we could still be around 15 to 20 all through the night and then tomorrow afternoon, they will ramp up around 25 to 35 miles per hour. so hopefully we can get these fires closer to the straight and that breeze under control a little bit faster. dion: that direction really making a difference. mike, many things to you. and moving over to the north bay, one of the largest fire prevention efforts the is happening as we speak. dozens of acres are part of a controlled burn to create a huge higher near committees. it was firsthand training for firefighters who may be needed during the long, hot summer. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story you will see only on abc seven. cornell: the mission to ignite and burn almost every inch of this dry nevada hillside. more than 100 firefighters fromg part in this massive controlled
4:06 pm
burn, the largest of the season. >> we are going to burn as much as 100 acres if the prescription keeps up. cornell: the goal, to create a giant fire break in a region that has not seen a major fire in years, but the drought is upping the risk factors. >> everything is drying out, already coming close to the critical levels in the next month. cornell: check this out, everything is so bone dry on his hillside, it is taking only a matter of minutes for everything to go up. but this burn is also a real-time training class for about 40 newts seasonal firefighters, like jake murphy, who will likely be needed this summer. >> just to be a part of a group that wants to help, protect structures, protecting land and i think that is one of the motivations. cornell: things are burning faster. >> making sure they are all back in the pack. cornell: firefighter kristen reyes is helping to train the new recruits, teaching them how
4:07 pm
to manage this giant swath of defensible space, which could help stop wildfires the season. >> we are obviously helping our community by lowering the fuel amount that we have. cornell: the controlled burn will continue on friday. in nevada, cornell bernard, abc7news. >> two days after the edgewood fire broke out in san mateo county, pg&e fired a report that filed a report in case it led to the fire. power remains out across most of the stanford campus today and now a big soccer game scheduled for saturday at stanford stadium, the california classico has to be postponed until september. abc7news reporter dustin dorsey reports on the challenges at stanford. dustin: for the 48 hours of past since the edgewood fire started under the extreme heat near rocky weight and east butte way -- east view wagered according to report, calfire collected pg and e equipment from the

distribution circuit in the vicinity of the edgewood fire. the report says the equipment was collected a half-mile from where the fire started. when we reach out to pg&e, the spokesperson did not directly comment on incident report, saying in part the fire it caused is under investigation. the fire has not only impacted equipment, but crated another problem for pg&e, a loss of power for multiple customers including stanford university's campus. >> i was trying to study in my dorm room and the lights went out. and i thought it would come on in a couple minutes. dustin: a couple minutes turn to a couple hours and now a couple days. pg&e cannot access the location where repairs are needed, leaving students with few options in this hot bay area weather. >> you stay in your work buildings and do you go back to your residential areas without ac? the options can be limited. dustin: the university has canceled classes for the remainder of the week as limited power is focused to
4:09 pm
high-priority buildings, including this busy dining hall, one of five locations on campus where students can cool down and charge their phones or computers. employee is doing what they can to aid those without options. >> were trying to see if we can get portable chargers, flashlights and anything to help out the students. dustin: everyone is doing what they can to stay safe and operate as usual but pga and he and stanford says there's no timetable as to one power may be fully restored. >> just a couple days is what we are hearing, so hopefully it will be sooner than that, but we are preparing for the worst. dustin: at stanford university, dustin dorsey, abc7news. kristen: oakland police are hoping some one can identify the hit-and-run driver who signed into a driver killing him. abc7news anchor karina joins us live in the newsroom with details and the video that they released today is hard to watch. karina: it's hard to watch, but were not gonna show you all of it. we want to let you know the oakland police department and crime stoppers are offering a $10,000 reward in this case. in that video we are about to

4:16 pm
my sources, the admissions process, be it the merit-based one or the lottery system has turned into a racially divided cesspool. now, a former school board member also told me it is up to the school district to put an end to that and they have failed. here is how the san francisco school board voted to return to the merit-based admissions process. president jenny lampe and the three newly appointed members voted in favor. kevin vogel's pad -- change his mind saying he wanted to depoliticize the issue. leanne: it has been a highly political issue. in an attempt to create more diversity, more than 40 years ago, the school district was told that it had to have significant representation of whites, blacks, latinos, and students of japanese and korean ancestry. that also meant that chinese-americans had to outscore all groups just to get in. a group of chinese-american

4:20 pm
and we are a unified command with contra costa county fire. >> can you talk about what your biggest concern is right now? we know that the weather conditions are rather erratic. >> yeah, we have high temperatures, low humidity, and the wind gusts pushing. it just takes a little bit longer to get the right resources there. >> do you have what you need right now? we've seen a lot of helicopter drops, and water, how are you doing in terms of readiness to fight this right now? >> we are getting plenty of air resources and ground resources. it is going to take a little longer to get there. imagine this time of day, trying to get resources moved around the bay area. >> can i just ask you -- >> we are getting assistance from other areas. >> how quickly are these fire

4:22 pm
which happens between now and about 8:00, so that is something that we are watching. also if you live downwind of these particular fires, your air quality is going to be pretty bad, so make sure you close the windows if you can or wear a mask if you have to be outside. look at the guston san francisco. 33. hayward 22 and eventually that slides down towards the gray where it is because to 20 right now. look at fairfield and rio vista, 2023 and that is the push through the straight and those winds will never completely go away. in fact, as we head to the overnight hours, you can see the wind pushing through san francisco at 11, gusting to 22 at fairfield. so those are those fast winds through the straight. that will enhance the porta costa and the venetia and possibly the fires. and you can see tomorrow as we head towards 5:00, we will have that same is blowing through there. it will bring temperatures down just a little bit tomorrow and the humidity up a little bit, but not much of difference from today. those winds will also calm down,
4:23 pm
except for through the straight during the evening and overnight hours into friday. let's talk about what to expect. typical summer cloud pattern developing, deeper maline layer -- marine layer. slightly milder afternoons for the next couple of days, because of that marine layer. you can see it working along the coast, all of the thunderstorms are up in the sierra and that is where they are going to stay, circling around that area of low pressure. we had an active day and we could still from these lighting strikes have something smoldering that we don't know about, so we got to keep and i on those areas just in case something flares up. now as far as future radar, you can see that we are looking at quieter weather by 10:00 tonight across the sierra. the increase into the cloud cover tomorrow and it takes a little bit longer to take -- get back to the coast a comes back quicker on friday which is why we're looking at milder temperatures. in fact, we're looking at mid to upper 50's and as we head towards tomorrow, a mild push moves even deeper inland. you can see places like the

kristen: once again let's get back to mike nicco with the weather situation, because the wind is what we are watching closely. like: right. and earlier in the week we had a record heat, we did not have the wind. but now the wind is back and that is why our temperatures are cooler, so it is such a main catch-22 that we are dealing with right now. let's take a look at what is going on with two of our fires. we will go down to near's in nola and we will go to the canyon fire where it is 82 degrees could look at the community, 32% and the winds have crept up. 15 gusting to 21 and since there blowing from the west, southwest to the east, northeast, we are
4:32 pm
worried about embers, possibly jumping into pleasanton. jumping across 680. it is possible. this is a very tree heavy area of the east bay hills and if we the fires of the to the top of those trees, we get what is called ember hopping and it is possible as the chimney effect will take any of these fires from the valley and roll it up the sides of the valley and get to the top of it, that is where you get the faster wind. in fact, the wind here thankfully will back off as we head into the evening hours. they will drop down to their lowest during the overnight to about 10 miles per hour, but then again tomorrow, we got the same set up and they will ramp back up to possibly 20 or 25 miles per hour with temperatures maybe a couple degrees cooler and humidity just a little bit higher, but pretty much what the firefighters are dealing with right now, they are going to have to deal with if they are fighting the fire tomorrow. let's head to the scenic fire, where near crockett, just to the west of the scenic fire there in
4:33 pm
porta costa it is 84, but look at the humidity. 16% and the wind are as fast if not faster, 21, 20 three could westerly component, a lot of the smoke in a southerly component at times, a lot of the smoke is blowing into venetia. that is where the embers could fly, if we have that same situation. you have nearly as many trees with this particular fire. it's a lot more grass that is burning right now, at least what i saw on sky 7 when it was over it. now look the wind here. through the carquinez strait, the wind always blows. it does not stop, day or night, under this typical summertime pattern that we are moving into. so they will stay up around 20 miles per hour overnight and then they could gust 25, 30, 35 again this time tomorrow. so that is the biggest issue. were looking at wind pushing through san francisco, 35, they will make their way through the san pablo bay into the carquinez strait and that is why i am worried about the wind possibly cranking up to even 30 to 35
4:34 pm
miles per hour as we head into the evening hours. now as we head overnight, the wind across most of our fires will back down except for that scenic fire. could see the wind there in places like fairfield, still at 22 and that is the wind blowing through the straight as we headed to the afternoon hours, all fires will be fanned once again by faster wind speeds. the only -- one of the few caveats that i can find is as this marine layer gets a little bit deeper and a little bit more entrenched it could increase humid he values a little bit. but the farther you are away from the ocean, the more likely it is going to remain dry especially in these areas where we are seeing these fires and that is why we are seeing them. the hottest temperatures are in these areas pretty the driest air, the driest vegetation in the fastest wind right now. wind conditions, not very good. not likely to improve much of the next 12 to 24 or even possibly 48 hours, dion. dion: not the news we wanted to hear but something we will
