>> a very busy day for firefighters all across the bay area. in the span of several hours, at least five wildfires broke out across our region, from top to bottom, left to right, these were the scenes in port costa and vacaville. >> in the middle is a fire burning in a remote part of alameda county near the san joaquin county line. on the right, a fire in pleasanton forced people to evacuate, all as another fire burned dangerously close to the valero oil refinery. good evening and thank you for joining us. ama: the most active fire is burning in the altamont area of livermore. it's been called tesla incident because it is near tesla road. this is a very remote area but it has a ready burned more than 300 acres. it is now 10% contained. cal fire says it started around 5:30 this evening.

there are no structures threatened or no evacuations. >> for the latest on conditions, let's get to sandhya patel. >> how does it look out there? sandhya: conditions are improving in that area. it is cooler right now, 76 degrees, humidity slowly coming up, still dry, 28% and the winds are light. the wind trend will remain light all night tonight. the winds will pick up tomorrow afternoon. you will notice that they are going 17-22 miles an hour. last visible satellite picture from just before sunset showing you that smoke a getting pushed southeastward from that tesla fire. part of the problem has been how dry it has been. 23% humidity in concord, livermore 34% so slowly coming up. no change with their drought monitor. multi-year drought. and in that vicinity, in the

category of severe to extreme drought not helping the situation. so unfortunately, a smoky sunset from our east bay hills camera tonight as we have multiple fires burning and that's still a possibility. i will have a look at the forecast coming up. dion: thanks. also in the east bay, the scenic fire has burned 108 acres and is 50% contained near the town of port costa. evacuations have been lifted. firefighters will remain at the scene through tonight. tim: relief and gratitude following a stressful thursday afternoon for many port costa residents. a mandatory evacuation order was put in place for around 200 people, including lori and her family, whose backyard was right next to the fire line. we caught up with her as she was returning home to a house she expects to be covered in fire retardant. >> the whole house to be burned down. tim: the quick response by crews

help stop the spread early on. >> calfire, along with contra costa fire, were a big help today in slowing this fire. tim: that erratic fire behavior and rough terrain made it difficult to initially fight. >> it's a difficult area to get into. there is very little road access. and so crews are working in. tim: local residents say they are just happy that despite the scare, things weren't worse. >> it could have easily been a disaster today so we are very lucky. tim: thankful to the fire crews for a job well done. >> that is what needs to go out, is the response and how well it was handled by the fire group. tim: in port costa, tim johns, abc 7 news. >> across the carquinez strait, fires sparked near the valero oil refinery. the police department tweeted it was receiving lots of calls about it. 10 acres of grass burned but firefighters are still on the scene. >> evacuations remain in place

for the canyon fire burning near sunol i alameda countyn. that fire has grown to about 71 acres since it started at around 2:00 this afternoon. it started as a brush fire on top of a mountain ridge. as the fire group, it spread to the other side of the hill. that's where one structure caught fire. residents living near golden eagle estate country club are among those told to leave their homes to stay safe. >> i was coming home from fremont with two other girls. as we were coming through niles canyon, we saw billows and billows of smoke. it look like it was by our house, so i said step on it. we came as fast as we could and then we could see it was probably up in the ridge. >> an evacuation order has been issued. >> in solano county, a fire called the tim fire burn 26 acres near vacaville. firefighters have it 80% contained and are staying on scene for a wild to mop up

hotspots. and they stayed to rescue a cat from a tree. one of the firefighters grabbed the cat and dropped it into a net. the cat was taken to a vet to be checked out. >> as these fires burned, we sent out multiple breaking news alerts, like this one through the abc7news app. you can customize the app for your location and for topics you are interested in. downloaded now to help you stay safe. > a suspected car thief is in custody in alameda county after a confrontation that left two sheriff step is injured. deputies responded to a call about two men trying to possibly strip cars of their parts. when deputies arrived, one man ran, but the other man was in a car and revved the engine, attempting to run over the deputies. one deputy was pinned between the car and the patrol car and a second deck the dutch second deputy was knocked over. both deputies opened fire, hitting the driver in the

shoulder. the man has been identified as a 20-year-old. he was taken to the hospital and will be booked into the santa rita jail. >> charges were filed today in the dui arrest of paul pelosi, the husband of nancy pelosi. he was involved in a crash involving his porsche and an suv. the deputies say when they asked pelosi for id, he handed over his license and an 1199 foundation card. the nonprofit benefits chp employees and their family. a blood sample taken two hours after the crash shows pelosi's blood alcohol level was just over the legal limit. pelosi is charged with misdemeanor dui with injury and could face up to five years of probation. he is due in court in august. >> new developments now on monkeypox. health officials in the south bay say they may have the first probable case after a person preliminarily tested positive. the case is awaiting cdc

confirmation. as abc7news reporter amanda del castillo tells us, health experts maintain the risk of transmission to the overall community is low. amanda: santa clara county is investigating its first probable case of monkeypox infection. the person recently traveled internationally, sought medical care and in an early test, tested positive. >> the confirmation is currently pending testing at the cdc. this individual is in isolation and the public health department is following up with people with whom the individual may have had close contact with. amanda: it's that close contact which presents some concerns, as dr. monica roy with the county's public health department. three groups at higher risk include people having prolonged closed contact with someone who is infected, those with a history of international travel, especially to countries with monkeypox. the third -- >> regionally, individuals who identify as gay, trans or men

who have sex with men are part of that group where we have been seeing a disproportionate number of cases. amanda: with pride weekend events ahead, dr. royce is all bay area counties are working together on messaging to make the public aware. after more than two years under covid-19, stanford health's dr. jorge salinas says two global outbreaks of emerging infections happening back-to-back is not common. but he is encouraged pandemic potential for monkeypox is low. >> it's my experience so far the people that are potentially affected by this outbreak are aware of this and are seeking care if they recognize some of the signs or some of the characteristic rashes associated with monkeypox. amanda: stanford medicine's clinical virology lab is one of the first clinical sites in the country testing for monkeypox. launched wednesday, stanford confirms the sample and casing question was processed in its

lab. looking forward -- >> we can anticipate, you know, this week and in the coming weeks to see many more laboratories that will provide testing capacity for monkeypox. amanda: the doctor anticipates the cdc's test confirmation in the next few days. >> as we get ready to celebrate pride in san francisco, the traditional pink saturday appears to be hampered by permitting issues. the event, called a touch of pink, is unlikely to happen. the permit was revoked for failure to meet conditions so they will not be allowed to set up stages. officials did note there may be an informal dance party around 8:00 p.m. when the unpermitted dyke march rolls through the castro. >> abc 7 is a proud sponsor of this weekend's san francisco pride parade. a celebration was held to

recognize the people who make the parade happen. the san francisco bay times put on divas and drinks at the academy, recognizing sf pride president carolyn weisinger, interim executive director suzanne ford and everyone who's making the parade happen. i was thrilled to be invited to introduce the mayor's office again this year. the city's office of transgender initiatives is the only position of its kind in the entire country. also this evening, march organizers celebrated pride's grand marshals. abc7news morning anchor reggie aqui was on hand at the fairmont hotel to introduce the group of amazing people chosen to represent the community this year. the list includes "jeopardy" champ amy schneider, local artist melanie demore, and trans health activist amber gray. and don't forget, abc 7 is the only place you can watch the 52nd annual san francisco pride parade. it is live on sunday. you can watch it wherever you get abc 7. >> taking steps to reduce gun violence. the latest on the senate's vote on a bipartisan gun-control

>> tonight, the senate passed a bipartisan bill the white house calls one of the most significant steps congress has taken to reduce gun violence in decades. the vote led to celebration on the senate floor. earlier in the day, 15 republican senators, including minority leader mitch mcconnell, joined all democrats to break a filibuster on the bill. the legislation offers grants to states for red flag laws and crisis prevention programs. it would enhance background checks for anyone 18-21 years old who tries to buy a gun and clarify which sellers are required to register as firearm licensees. that would require them to conduct background checks on potential buyers. >> it's not the measure i would have written if i had been doing it alone, but it marks meaningful progress. if you wait to get everything in the united states senate, chances are you will get nothing. progress is better than nothing. this measure will save lives.

>> the legislation will now head to the house, where it will likely be taken up tomorrow. >> this comes on the same day the supreme court ruled declaring new york's concealed carry law unconstitutional. morgan norwood has the details. >> in a major expansion of gun rights, the supreme court striking down new york state's concealed carry law and affirming the right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense. the new york law required anyone seeking a license to carry a concealed handgun to show they had a proper cause, especially for it. the court declared the law violates the second amendment right to keep and bear arms. new york city's mayor immediately condemning the decision. mayor adams: we are a densely populated city. millions of people use our transportation system, traffic accidents can escalate into gunfights, that's not what we want. we cannot allow new york to

become the wild, wild west. >> things won't change overnight, but getting a license to carry in new york will become a lot easier. for example, people who want to carry a concealed gun will still need a license, pass the background check, fingerprint and registration. what they will have to do is convince local officials they have a special need for a license. >> most people seem to support it. >> you feel less safe? >> i will. i think when i feel like people are carrying guns and there are more guns on the streets, yes. >> justice stephen breyer mentioned the 277 mass shootings that have occurred this year, saying the court's decision does not consider the potentially deadly consequences. samuel alito firing back, writing how does the dissent account for the fact that one of the mass shootings took place in buffalo. the new york law at issue in this case obviously did not stop the perpetrator. the head of a gun rights group that brought the case to the

supreme court saying he's relieved at the outcome. >> we are not the problem. the problem is the criminals and the wrongdoers in the state and the politicians have to learn that. >> 80 million americans live in states with laws similar to new york's. right now, their laws are just as vulnerable. morgan norwood, abc news, los angeles. >> governor newsom issued a statement saying california is ready with a bill that will update and strengthen our public carry law and make it consistent with the supreme court ruling, just as chief justice roberts and justice kavanaugh said states like california are free to do. >> the supreme court also decided that law enforcement cannot be sued for money damages when they fail to provide the miranda warning prior to questioning. a sheriff's deputy was sued after he failed to read a miranda warning to a los angeles hospital worker accused of sexually assaulting a patient. today, justices ruled 6-3 in favor of the deputy. the focus of the case determined whether the constitutional right

of the warning applied to criminal suspects prior to talking to authorities. >> we want to check back in on the weather as we inch closer to the weekend. still worried about the fires. dion: sandhya patel watching it all. sandhya: one of the biggest factors has been the multi-year drought in the bay area, a lack of rain the first few months of this year obviously playing a role. let's take a look at the fire danger index. fire danger is year-round, but one of the things we consider is the dryness, the heat, and of course, the winds. it's going to be breezy, high to very high uv index is expected, which is really for our inland, east bay, so keep that in mind. be aware no matter where you are these days. overall, we are obviously dealing with fire danger because of all of those ongoing conditions. the winds will be gusting tomorrow, although they will be on short 27 miles an hour fairfield, 26 livermore.

some of the larger fires are still burning and there is smoke around you, keep windows and doors closed, bring pets inside, put your ac on recirculate. if a fire does break out, listen to emergency officials and evacuate. in the sierra nevada, we did have multiple lightning strikes today. fortunately, there was some rain accompanying that. that was the monsoon moisture that brought them thunderstorms. visibility is low, down to a quarter of a mile in half moon bay. an hour before sunrise at 5:48, a rare planetary alignment. mercury, venus, mars, jupiter and saturn. get away from the fog because that's going to be hard to see. temperatures in the 50's and 60's coast and bay, inland areas in the 70's and 80's. it is a foggy view from our golden gate bridge camera. heat easing next two days inland

and a wide range of temperatures coming your way for the weekend. further pride celebrations, the weather couldn't be better, upper 60's to the low 70's. for the parade, temperatures will be in the 50's and 60's. first thing in the morning, 40's to the 70's. watch out for the fog once again. tomorrow afternoon, the fog lingers near the coast. temperatures will be in the 60's. as you go inland, there will be a few hotspots, low to mid 90's. we will get out of the upper 90's that we saw today and temperatures will continue to trend lower for saturday. nice for the pride parade. temperatures will be in the mid 90's on through early next week for our hottest locations, but everyone will notice a cooldown middle of next week with 80's inland, which will be a nice change of pace. >> it will be indeed. thanks. the swimmer attacked by a shark off the coast of monterey earlier this week is in intensive care at a hospital in salinas.

he was attacked near lovers point yesterday. he's a member of a local swimming club that swims in the area several times each week. other swimmers rushed to his aid, pulled him out of the water and administered first aid. the surgeon who operated on the victim says he's lucky to have made out of the water. >> one of the open wounds in his abdomen, you can see clearly one of the major arteries that feeds the leg on the right side. . that was clearly exposed as if a surgeon had dissected it. this laceration was literally millimeters away from killing him. >> that man, he did not suffer any broken bones or major organ damage. his injuries were primarily lacerations left from a single
