to gun rights and now religious freedom. this is a right for everybody the court's conservative majority ruled that high school football coach, joe kennedy's post-game prayer is protected under the first amendment. this comes after the washington state public school coach was suspended for preying on the field after games legal analyst jim hammer says, this can be seen as a big win for religious freedom supporters. what's going on now is the court saying no religion has an equal right along with secular activities to exist in in public places, and that's a big shift of the last 20-30 years hammer says that the key component of this ruling is that the court said, it's fair for coach kennedy or any public school coach or teacher to pray and private if he had tried on school time to lead kids in prayer at a public school. i think that would have been struck down by the court. so there's still our limits to that. it's saying to people who have sincerely held religious beliefs that they sort of an equal standing during their their private time, but some argue there's nothing private about the coach taking a knee in the center of the field and it may pressure students to join along

enforcing bands with few exceptions and an additional 18 are likely to ban or severely restrict services in the coming weeks and month affecting more than 31 million americans louisiana's trigger bands originally went into effect following a friday's decision from the high court, but it has since been blocked by a state court after a reproductive right center filed a lawsuit allowing for reproductive health care to continue. utah's bands are also being challenged. meanwhile lawmakers in missouri are considering legislation. that would make it more difficult to cross-date lines for abortion care. somebody calls a planned parenthood clinic in springfield, missouri. they're scheduling an appointment at the fairview heights clinic across to illinois. so that's missouri activity. that's a violating the laws of the state of missouri and i would like us to see at some point. look at that. the white house says it will challenge states that are trying to ban women from traveling across state lines to receive abortion services, but for some travel might not even be an option with studies showing that

49% of abortion patients have an income below the poverty line and in south dakota the governor, there is also trying to crack down on abortion pills received via telehealth claiming. it's unsafe, even though medical experts have family medication to be safe and effective. it's to stop anyone from getting medication over the internet or by the phone from a physician and having this procedure at home on supervised. the fda approved getting those pills by mail late last year. in an exclusive interview with cnn vice president kamala harris vows to continue fighting for abortion rights. we will do everything within our power as an administration through the executive branch to ensure that women have access to the medication they need and which has been by the way fda approved and that they will have freedom of travel and that that travel should be unrestricted and you're going to do that. through the courts if need be i am sure that that our department of justice is going to do that

based on every statement that the attorney general has made. here in california lawmakers are a strategizing ways to ensure abortion and contraceptive rights across the state permanently abc 7 news. anchor liz kroitz has a look at the latest move taken by legislators. on the ballot this november californians will be asked to vote on whether abortion and contraceptive rights should be protected in the state's constitution today the state assembly passed the constitutional amendment with more than two-thirds support and now it's up to voters to decide whether it should become law this constitutional amendment will enshrine in the california state constitution access to safe and legal abortion as well as contraception following the supreme court's decision last week to overturn roe versus wade state lawmakers move. with their plan to solidify abortion rights in california right now of the state's constitution protects the right to privacy and healthcare decisions, which has been interpreted to include abortion rights, but the amendment would make it more explicit. it says quote the state shall

not deny or interfere with an individual's reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives. we think that it is extreme even for california, jonathan keller is the president of the california family council a faith-based anti-abortion rights group that opposes the amendment. i i think it will really be interesting because it's it's gonna be the first time that anybody in california has had a pure up or down vote on any issue related to abortion since 2008. normally normally everything is filtered through republic. as democrat and everything else but having a like just a pure yes or no vote will be interesting bay area assembly member buffy wicks supports the amendment. she says even if there ever becomes a nationwide ban on abortion, it would ensure abortion rights always remain in california as someone who has had an abortion and has had to make that decision. i was able to make that decision on my own terms.

and that's fundamentally what this is about. operates abc 7 news the january 6th committee investigating the attack on the capital announced today that it will hold a hearing tomorrow last week the committee postponed hearings plan for this week until july but in a surprise this morning the committee announced that there will in fact be a hearing tomorrow congressman adam schiff who is on the committee told us why on midday life we have decided to hold a hearing tomorrow with some late breaking. formation some new evidence, which i can't go into so people will have to wait until tomorrow, but we've continued to adjust our hearing schedule depending on the facts and circumstances to make sure that we have time to adequately prepare for some but also to take advantage of new information when we receive it as we are doing with the hearing tomorrow. the hearing begins at 10 am our time and abc news will have live coverage.

governor newsom and state legislators have reached a deal to give inflation relief payments to about 23 million californians governor newsome. originally wanted to send money just to vehicle. owners to combat high gas prices this new deal will send money to people regardless of vehicle ownership, but the money won't go out until october middle-class families working class families in this state are going to benefit. here's a breakdown of how much people will get single filers making less than $75,000 a year will receive $350 joint filers with income under $150,000 will receive seven hundred dollars single filers earning up to $125,000 get a $250 payment joint filers earning up to 250,000 will get a $500 payment individuals who earn up to $250,000 would get $200. state filers with income up to $500,000 would receive a $400

payment households who claim dependents would receive additional payments by moving on in the a one man is dead. and another injured is and i should say it's under arrest following what oakland police say was a chain reaction crash tied to a sideshow. it happened on international boulevard near 54th avenue at around 2 am sunday when one of the cars slammed into her group of people one of those bystanders was killed a chief lauren armstrong this afternoon laid out what happened. prior the collision to officers attempted to stop the vehicle traveling nearly at a hundred miles an hour suspect vehicle in this case. the nissan was involved inside show activity. we have been able to confirm that the officers were in the area where this activity were occurring. i think we're gonna investigate to see what involvement they have with the vehicle. a 19 year old oakland man was arrested for the crash. the victim is a 28 year old hayward man, the two officers

tomorrow the santa clara county board of supervisors will vote on a measure to help provide narcan and other fent. prevention resources in schools the plan from supervisor cindy chavez would make funding available for schools to purchase narcan which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose back to the matter is is that while we can make this resource available every school district every school board and every school will have to make this decision for themselves. we're really just trying to make the resource available to them. according to the county fentanyl overdose deaths have steadily resident in recent years up from 29 in 2019. 135 last year officials say they're unaware of any overdose deaths on any school campus in the county. well today ucsf is welcoming patients to its new one-of-a-kind mental health care fac. in san francisco's mission bay neighborhood the nancy friend pritzker psychiatry building was named after the donor's sister who suffered from mental illness
