the cloud cover close to the surface. the fog is slow to break down this morning. as you take a couple of extra layers out the door, you need them for much of the morning. by the afternoon, we have sunshine away from the coast. a cooler afternoon because it turns windy later today, only to the 60's and 70's. even cooler for the holiday weekend. kumasi: this morning, two oakland police officers are on administered of leave after with the police chief is calling very serious potential misconduct. it happened during a sunday morning sideshow in a deadly crash after. police chased a driver because they believed he was part of a sideshow that happened saturday night. the suspect raced away, lost control of the vehicle and ended up crashing into other vehicles. the driver hit and killed a 28-year-old. his brother believes he could have been saved, saying the officers only taped off the scene and left. >> he was still alive he was on

the floor. if they had not taken off, one of them could've checked on the driver. kumasi: the driver and the pursuit has been detained. chief armstrong said he could not get into details about what happened at the crash. oakland unified parents are going to be meeting today to talk about the next steps to stop the closure of seven schools, this is coming after the school board voted down a resolution to reverse their plan. ryan curry is joining us in the newsroom with details. ryan: good morning. parents have a sit and purchased a park elementary to discuss the next steps. -- sit in protest. this is a last ditch effort to prevent the schools from closing. we have seen many parents tried to get the district to reverse the decision, it does not seem that that will happen. yesterday saw heated moments at the school board meeting with

one member leaving the audience to confront board members. following months of protests in debates, the board is proceeding with the plan to close several schools this fall. the district says they are headed for a budget shortfall and enrollment has been declining. closing schools was the best way of avoiding the shortfall. the problem most of the schools set to close our and predominantly black and brown neighborhoods. >> i do not believe we have the resources to maintain the number of schools we have. it stretches our resources to thin. >> i'm going to ask you guys to hear us again. could the community put children first? >> the whole board process is a sham. there is no community interest factored in. ryan: the district says even with an infusion of one-time money expected to come soon, the long-term health of the district remains bleak without closures. organizers of the sit in till abc 7 news they will be determining the next steps.

now, the seven schools in the district are still set to be closed. ryan curry, abc 7 news. reggie: new development in california's effort to make sure abortions remain safe and accessible for anyone. state legislature just approved the largest budget in state history. the $300 billion spending plan in goods 200 million dollars to maintain california as a sanctuary for people seeking abortions. $20 million will be used to help people with things like airfare, hotels, gas and meals. the money is earmarked for people who already live in the state, that upset some groups who say the governor's budget stops short of helping people out of state. >> it is really imperative that we include funding for out-of-state travel. reggie: the approved budget includes tens of millions more for clinics to serve uninsured californians, provide security and expand outreach. the budget is not headed to

at 77-year-old woman with murder and arson charges that killed her husband. it happened saturday. he died tuesday from smoke inhalation. arson investigators say his wife admitted to setting the fire. according to the police report, investigators say her son described his mother as possibly having undiagnosed dementia. reggie: sonoma state university appointed an interim president to replace the outgoing president. he will begin his presidency august 1. he worked at sacramento state for 28 years before retiring in 2018. during the career, he served as vice president fred ministration in businesses fares, provost and vp for academic affairs. she faced intense criticism and a vote of no-confidence by university faculty for how she handled a sexual harassment allegations against her husband and her oversight of the budget and enrollment. her last day is july 31. kumasi: a new jury report is

this comes as community leaders want voters to decide on whether they want a new ballpark. a small rally was held yesterday supporting the idea of moving it to the november ballot. this comes despite numerous amount of public, held already over the issue, but all of that would not matter if the commission votes no. >> this commission is looking at whether or not the whole bay area can accommodate the growth and cargo. its professional staff has said yes. however terminal is not necessary for the bay area to meet cargo needs. ryan: now, we wait for the official vote. the mayor does not support moving the decision on the howard terminal to the november valid -- ballot. she called a stall tactic. after months and years of debate about the project, it could be over of the commission does not remove the port priority use. if they do remove it, further discussions will be held.

ryan curry, abc 7 news. kumasi: there are disturbing new details this morning about the investigation into the deaths of dozens of migrants in a semi-truck in texas. investigators are saying the driver of the truck may have tried to trick authorities into thinking he was one of the victims. jobina: 53 migrants died insulting texas heat. suspected driver is facing charges and authorities say he pretended to be a passenger during the initial part of the investigation. they figured out the lie because surveillance video at a security check when showed him behind the wheel of the truck. he and three others are facing charges that could result in the death penalty. the texas governor is promising more resources as numbers of migrants continued to surge at the border. >> today, i am announcing texas is going to add additional truck checkpoints. jobina: those extra checkpoints -- resources would include

against the family he is accused of trying to kill. our media partner reports he filed the suit on behalf of his four-year-old son. he claims the family's negligence and running their day care that to his child being sexually abused by the owner's son. velasquez is charged with attempted murder for chasing down henry eugene who is accused of molesting velasquez his young son. police say he shot into the man's pickup truck and struck the suspect stepfather, paul bender, in the arm. kumasi: tonight, santa clara county vector control is planning to spray chemicals to kill adult mosquitoes. they recently found mosquitoes infected with west nile. it will start at 10:00 p.m. until about 1:00 a.m. in neighborhoods with the 95035 zip code. the treatments pose minimal risk to people and pets. in san francisco, popular mission district bar is closing.

kumasi: a major development in the january 6 investigation. a man long considered to be a critical witness has been subpoenaed after the testimony of a former white house aide who claims there were concerns former president trump could be exposed to criminal charges if you traveled to the capital -- capitol that day. jobina: abc news learned pat cipollone evaluating his subpoena from the january 6 committee. he could argue his conversations with former president trump fall under executive privilege. sources say he may sit down for written testimony to discuss his critical role in the final days of the trump white house, including on the day of the capitol riot. it comes after the explosive testimony from former trump white house aid cassidy hutchinson. she claims he voiced concern that trump would be exposed to

when doing renovation projects. somebody in delaware discovered something we've never heard of. a whole burger king restaurant behind a wall in the mall. this abandoned restaurant appears to be from the 90's. the general manager says it is not clear how long the burger king has been sitting vacant, but they took it over in 2020. now, they hope to get another tenant since the spaces already laid out for a restaurant. reggie: california lawmakers considering a bill that would extend the life of the diablo canyon nuclear power plant. over newsom's office wants to allocate a reserve fund of up to 75 million dollars to keep aging power plants in operation beyond the scheduled closing date in an effort to maintain california's strained power grid. the 37-year-old plant has been preparing to shut down for more than five years. diablo canyon is the state's last nuclear facility. kumasi: the biggest wildfire in california right now has sparked
