[no audio] >> the lagoon sure seemingly painted silver by a school of anchovy. this photo showing the mass die off event that happened earlier this week in marin county. >> this is just one of those times where we get to see just the sheer number of the size of the schools of fish. it's amazing. >> amazing and a mystery.

there is uncertainty about why the thousands of fish ended up here. here's the county parts director. >> what likely happened is some kind of predator in the ocean encountered a school of anchovy somewhere near the mouth of the lagoon. >> possibly drawing the anchovy into sallow water where they supped out -- supped up oxygen and suffocated. that ending is likely though he believes something else may have attracted the anchovy to the lagoon. >> hungry anchovies go where the food is. >> a volunteer at uc davis says this la niña year is generating more food production and the foraging fish follow. the cool water is bringing in more anchovy than we've seen in the last 10 years off of our coast and in the bay. the abundance is good news for seabirds. interesting news for anyone seeing anchovy far from water. >> people might not want to

we apologize for some technical difficulties. hopefully you can hear us find right now. welcome. tomorrow kicks off a long holiday weekend for the fourth of july. we want to get to sandhya patel for your forecast. >> the forecast has one thing that's missing, the heat. let me show you the holiday weekend preview. saturday and sunday are warmest locations. below average temperatures. wendy at times. fourth of july will be milder. low 60's to low 80's. quiet if you are traveling around the state. 70 degrees in yosemite. you will notice that heat is confined to the deserts. 109 down south. tahoe, sunny and mild friday, saturday. cooler sunday with a few more clouds and it's going to be great for the fourth of july on monday. i will be back with the fireworks forecast for the bay area, coming right up. >> thanks a lot.

great weather but not great travel. millions of travelers around the bay area and country including the bay area will be flying out of town for long fourth of july weekend. holiday travel is shaping up to be something of a nightmare. tim johns is here with us tonight with details on what could be a difficult few days. >> it's all quiet at sfo right now. be prepared for flight cancellations and travel delays if you are taking to the skies this weekend. airlines have been having problems with staffing shortages. all of them could be amplified this weekend. karen county resident lisa trust time is traveling this holiday weekend to see family. her flight to denver was scheduled to leave sfo on friday. thursday afternoon, she learned the flight had been canceled, forcing her to make other plans. >> so we scrambled and booked a flight today. >> she's one of thousands of

americans who've been impacted by flight delays and cancellations across the country. a trend that is expected to get worse over the fourth of july weekend because of a pilot strike by delta airlines at seven major airports. >> the airlines don't have enough staff. pilots, flight attendants, curbside check-in people, tsa security folks. i mean everyone is shortstaffed. >> he says the airline industry is basic -- facing challenges on a scale it has never seen before. >> if anything goes wrong like a thunderstorm, it's a domino effect. it ends up being chaos. >> some passengers say they are worried about their own travel plans. some even receiving alerts like this one from airlines warning them to arrive with plenty of time to spare. sarah says she came four hours early. >> i've been warmed by my family that there have been delays this past week and because of the holiday weekend.

i wanted to make sure that i was here. >> the cancellation rate six around one point -- 1.4%. depending on where you are flying to come experts say that might not always be the case. >> we have to be really patient and understanding right now. >> tim johns reporting. if you are staying home this weekend, there are many events happening around the bay area to celebrate the holiday. we have all the information that you need on our website. >> family and friends pay tribute to the 28-year-old man killed in a crash connected to an east oakland sideshow. they gathered at the same location where he lost his life early sunday. he was killed after police chased a driver who they believed was part of a sideshow. the car raced away from officers at 100 miles per hour.

his brother talked with abc 7's j.r. stone about the dangers of sideshow culture. >> i see it a lot. cars. that's nothing new to us. now that this has happened, now we are grieving and hurting because of the things that we see on a daily basis, turning out to be something that causes us to lose a brother. >> the driver of the car police were pursuing has been arrested. the family wants to know more from oakland police. two officers under investigation for misconduct related to the incident. >> fire crews on the scene of a big fire earlier today in vallejo. still monitoring hotspots. it happened earlier this evening. our helicopter was above the scene. crews were able to get it under control within an hour and prevent it from spreading to

nearby buildings. there are no reports of injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> the oakland athletics are one step closer to building their waterfront ballpark, when nikki approval from the sf bay conservation and development commission. [applause] >> the seven hour session came to a close. the bcdc voted 23-2 in favor of removing port use from howard terminal. casey pratt caught up with the a's president who talked about getting passed yet another stadium hurdle. >> it was a massive win, overwhelmingly positive. more than we thought. it's a critical approval that we got today. >> we know this is just a step. joya described it as getting it to second base in this process. third base is what i'm more worried about. that would be getting the oakland city council to vote on

a development agreement, community benefits agreement, how likely is that to come before the end of the year? >> it really needs to happen by the end of the year. the mayor is leaving office. she is turning out. she's been the biggest proponent of this body -- project. without her leadership, i don't see it getting across the finish line. we have the next six months to get the approval. we urge everyone involved on the city side to schedule the vote as soon as possible. >> is this a matter of time or are there big gaps? >> a little bit of both. the ball is in the city's court in terms of scheduling the vote and responding to our proposal. we are trying to do everything we can to advance this forward. we are running out of time in oakland. we only have the next six months to figure this out. there's a small window of opportunity and we want to see if we can pull it off. it would be an incredible project on the waterfront. it would really be a transformative problem -- project for oakland and the

solemnly swear. >> she was sworn in by her predecessor stephen breyer who officially stepped down today. his retirement marks the end of the high court's current term. before the end of the term, the supreme court released rulings on big cases related to climate and immigration. one curbs the environmental protection agency's ability to broadly regulate carbon emissions from existing power plants. the other ruling gives president biden approval to end the remain in mexico immigration policy that originated under the trump administration. >> governor newsom has signed into law a new state budget centered on gas refunds for 17 million californian taxpayers. it's an effort to soften the sting of highfield prices and the cost of living. it will vary from $200 for individuals to more than $1000 for couples with children. the package includes 1.4 billion in utility payment assistance and expanded tax credits. state lawmakers invested heavily

it will be cool to mild in the afternoon. we are basically looking at the fog returning later on that night. let's take a look at the fireworks forecast. this is an early preview. there will be fog around the coast on monday. temperatures anywhere from the upper 50's to mid 60's. good idea to dress in layers. it can get pretty chilly. if you are camping in santa cruz, check out this forecast. fog and sunshine. 73 degrees on saturday. partly cloudy and in the low 70's. sunday, a touch cooler. fog and sun and 69 degrees. here's why we aren't expecting any heat. it's one trough after another that's going to continue to dominate over the pacific which means we aren't going to have to deal with any high-pressure or hot weather. fog has pushed over the bay as you will notice. low clouds on live doppler 7. visibility is down to four miles in half moon bay. watch out if you have early plans. onshore breezes blowing.
