[ laughter ] men have had all kinds of weird reactions to last week's abortion ruling. ever since the supreme court struck down roe v. wade, urologists have seen a spike in vasectomies. this just goes to show you that men really will do anything to avoid wearing a condom. [ laughter ] i've never personally performed a vasectomy, but i'd like to try my very first one on samuel alito. [ cheers and applause ] back in 1919, after a very long fight, congress finally passed the 19th amendment, which gave women like me the right to vote. but female suffrage was only half the battle. which is why tonight, i'd like

[ laughter ] and for all you men who don't understand what's at stake here, let me tell you about a real thing that happens in nature right now. it's called parthenogenesis. this is a scientific phenomenon where animals that used to reproduce sexually, start reproducing asexually. that means without the use of sperm. they've seen it happen to a shark, an anaconda, most recently a condor.

their names are bert and bernese. i love them, but there has been some tension between us lately, because i've noticed they seem to greatly prefer my housekeeper, mabelle, over me. [ laughter ] so, i did what any loving dog owner would do in this situation. i took them to a pet psychic to sort this out on national television. this one is bernese, the more petite version, and bert is the bigger. i brought you treats, you guys. they're allergic to so many different things. >> funny you say that, i was talking to them yesterday. i asked for a photo of your dogs. and i had said, you know, i got some treats for you. >> chelsea: to the photos? >> well, to your dogs. >> chelsea: okay. >> i use a photo to access the consciousness of an animal. >> chelsea: wow. >> when i said i had treats for you, they said, you're going to have to check with my mom first. >> chelsea: i technically am their mother, but they think the

>> chelsea: i didn't realize that taron was a welsh name. i thought you were british. i didn't realize you were from wales. >> it's a bit confusing because i was born in england, i was born in liverpool. my mother and i moved to wales when i was about 2. i happened to have a welsh name. it should have been taryn which is welsh for "thunder." my mom because she's from liverpool and not wales, she spell it wrong on the birth certificate. so now i'm taron. >> chelsea: taron, the way you said it is like a character from "game of thrones." >> i am a character from "game of thrones." [ laughter ] >> chelsea: yeah, but i've actually -- i'm one of the few americans that have been to wales. >> really? >> chelsea: yes, i went to wales. wales has a reputation. people think there's a lot of sheep and funny busines going on over there. [ laughter ] i want to say that that is not true. when i was there, i didn't see anybody doing anything fishy with a sheep. >> no. [ laughter ] i think it has happened.

[ laughter ] but not as much as you might think. >> chelsea: why do you think it has that kind of reputation? >> just stories, you know. >> chelsea: it's funny, i went on a farm in wales with these two brothers who ran a sheep farm. so i saw them in action rounding up the sheep with an australian shepherd, those are the dogs they need -- >> that kind of action. >> chelsea: it wasn't penetration, nothing like that. [ laughter ] >> good, good. okay. >> chelsea: when was the last time you were back in wales? >> probably -- i was there for a wedding about four weeks ago, actually. >> chelsea: oh, okay, so recently. >> recently. very beautiful. the adjacent town is a place calls balson. a couple of friends of mine were getting married on a hilltop overlooking the sea. a very, very beautiful part of the world. i'm incredibly lucky to come from such a special place. >> chelsea: what is the name of the town you are from? >> i went to primary school in a village in the north part of wales, it's called --

[ laughter ] just kidding. when was the last time you were in the home that you grew up in or the town that you grew up in? >> i moved when i was 12 to where my family still live. and, i mean, the last time i was there for a really extended period of time was just after all the elton john stuff. i mean, the world obviously stopped. i went back to being in wales for about six months. that's kind of the longest i've been there -- >> chelsea: for the lockdown and everything? >> for the lockdown and everything, yeah. i went back and immediately started just eating. you know. pastry, growing to the side of a house. >> chelsea: well, i think that was right after, right? you won your golden globe for the movie. [ cheers and applause ] then you went back home.

so did you have -- how did your family handle you being a big, big star when you came home? >> well, yeah, my family are pretty down to earth. my two little sisters are completely unimpressed. my 12-year-old sister now has a phone. so she's -- sort of tends to -- i get the impressions they'll sometimes say, can you send me a selfie? you realize it's one of the kids in school who want it. i don't know. yeah, i was there for about six months. it was lovely, actually. weirdly, stressful and horrible as the pandemic was for so many people, i sort of found it to be quite a nice sabbatical. i kind of was able to just chill and be by the sea. yeah, it was nice. >> chelsea: was it nice to be with your family? my family invaded my house during the pandemic. my sister has three adult children, and i didn't appreciate that at all. [ laughter ] i didn't want -- i mean, the pandemic was fun for me in the beginning. >> yes. >> chelsea: first two weeks like spring break, oh my god, party at my house solo. >> yeah, yeah. >> chelsea: then after it went

on and on it was like, you know, by the third month, i was ready to get the party started again, out of my house. >> yeah. well, yeah. i mean, the people you love most in the world are the people you love most in the world and that's great. but they are also the people that drive you the most insane. >> chelsea: yeah, yeah. >> it was nice. it was good being with family, i enjoyed it. >> chelsea: good. i know you are close friends with elton john, ever since you did the movie? you guys are still -- >> yeah. [ laughter ] yeah, yeah. we are still friends. he's amazing. i love him. he's hilarious and crazy. yeah, i saw him last week, went to his house on wednesday, we had lunch. crab salad, spicy lamb. [ laughter ] >> chelsea: have you ever been in a real prison? have you ever been arrested i should say? >> i -- i kind of want to be

able to say yes. i feel like it would give me some edge. but no, not at all. [ laughter ] >> chelsea: are you a squeaky-clean kind of guy? >> am i -- i don't want to say i'm squeaky-clean. put everyone off me, wouldn't it? [ cheers ] yeah, i'm a bit -- i'm pretty -- yeah, i think so. >> chelsea: are you single? we should get that messaging out there as well. [ cheers and applause ] oh, wait a second, you're blushing a little. maybe you're not single. >> oh, i am. i am. >> chelsea: i want to talk about ray liotta. he passed away, as everyoe knows. he plays your father in this series. so tell us about what that was like, working with him. >> yeah, you know, obviously -- he was something of a hero to me. when i read this script, it's got a very touching and really dysfunctional relationship at the heart of it. it's the relationship between my character and his father. and it was so exciting when ray agreed to do it. he read the script and agreed in under 24 hours.

he was so excited about it. and i didn't really know what to expect. his performance is kind of characterized by menace, i would say. you know, he's an intimidating figure. >> chelsea: always. in every movie, yeah. >> in every movie. and i stepped on -- i did an instagram post about this. it's a story i do like telling. i stepped on set, and he was kind of in his own world. didn't really -- there wasn't really -- sort of engaged with his environment. sometimes actors can be -- we're a weird bunch. we do weird stuff. so i thought i'd leave him to it, give him his space. and from across the room he sort of caught my eye and just stood up, walked towards me in a kind of frail way. he's in ailing health in the show. and he just embraced me. and we sort of stayed that way for a little while. it was kind of weird, but it was really nice as well. [ laughter ] and i said, i'm really glad we're doing this. and he said, me too.

he didn't say anything to me for that first day, other than that, other than what we said to each other in character. and we had a few weeks of filming together. it was a really amazing experience for me. he just brought this presence, this reality. in contrast with, you know, the kind of toughness of him, he brought this incredible tenderness and love. and i'm really proud of the relationship we built. we had the premiere last night. his daughter and his fiancee were both there to honor him. we really have lost one of the greats. he's amazing in the show. and -- yeah, i loved, loved working with him. >> chelsea: did he give you any advice? [ applause ] on set? any acting advice or anything like that? >> he didn't give me acting advice. he was always very complimentary. and we got very comfortable with each other very quickly. and i -- sat opposite him in one of the one of the prison visitation things. i was moaning about something i had to do as an actor, that's

what we do, we moan. i was telling him about something i had to do promotionally or whatever. i was telling him about it, he's listening quietly, not really looking at me. i finished, he didn't really say anything. i thought, god, he doesn't agree with me, he's made a judgment about me buff because of that. he leant over and went, [ bleep ] you paying me. >> thank you. >> chelsea: did you write that yourself? >> yes. i started writing songs when i was 12. it's like songwriter, then artist, for me. but first single off the next record is always kind of -- i'm particular about it because i want it to set the tone. so i was really heavily influenced the last few years by going back to '90s music, the music i grew up on, shania, sheryl crow, whatever. i wanted this to feel breezy, warm, inviting. '90s flair. it's a first step into the new situation, the new era. >> chelsea: sexy, i like that. do you write with your husband? because he's a country music star as well. >> he is. we don't. we do the same thing every time so we already bring it home. imagine coming home, hey, do you want to write it? it's too much. do you do that? write jokes together? >> chelsea: sometimes we'll help each other with jokes, but yeah, we're not coming home trying to yuck it up. usually you have a bunch of people kissing your ass and telling you, no, that doesn't smell. you're like, i can smell it. [ laughter ] >> every now and then, is this okay? is this good? do i suck at everything? they're like, no, you're okay, you're fine. >> chelsea: you were -- your first song, how does that go down? >> it was an accident. i forgot it was mother's day. i'm so close with my mom. and my dad but very separate. and i forgot it was mother's day. 'twas the night before. and i was like, i'll just write her a song, i know she'll cry, she's a sucker for songs. i wrote her a song called "oh mama." i couldn't play an instrument, i didn't know how to write a song. it was like a poem that i sang. it rhymes, kinda. she cried and i remember this feeling, oh, that came from a really pure place. the fact that she felt that -- i could have just sang "mary had a little lamb" and i'm sure she would have loved that. you know, there was a moment where i was like, i want to write something that feels real to me, that connects with
