sfo as we expected to be on friday right before the fourth of july. this could be one of the busiest travel weekends since before the pandemic. it is tough to speculate the exact numbers but we have seen numbers rising through june and now we are approaching july. it could be a potentially busy weekend. already causing delays. according to travel experts they are advising people to roll with some of the expected cancellations and delays that could be expected. staffing shortages and other problems have caused these issues to be problems for months. with the issues and travel they could be amplified. passengers say airlines are notifying them to arrive well in advance of their flight, sometimes hours early just in case of cancellations or delays. the good news is ff -- sfo has lower cancellation rates compared to the national average but it could be a tough weekend for many. >> if anything goes wrong like a

neatly falling from the sky -- are apparently falling from the sky in read county. abc news reporter spoke with what is causing this phenomenon. j.r.: the short -- amanda: the shore painted silver by anchovies. the mass die off event happened in marin county. >> this is one of those times we get to see the sheer number of the size of the schools of fish. it is kind of amazing. amanda: amazing in a mystery. there is still uncertainty about why the thousands of fish ended up here. >> what likely happened is some kind of predator in the ocean encountered a school of anchovy somewhere near the mouth of the lagoon. amanda: possibly drawing the anchovy into shallow water where they sucked up the limited oxygen and suffocated. a researcher says that ending is

likely, though he believed something else maybe attracted the anchovy. >> hungry anchovies go where the food is. amanda: a volunteer at oc davises fish economy lab says this lending a year is generating more food production that the fish follow. he says the cool water is bringing in more anchovy than we have seen in the last 10 years off our coast. the abundance is good news for seabirds. interesting news for anyone seeing anchovy far from water. >> i think they are flying over, just can't take it anymore. i would imagine. they are feasting so much, it is more fish than they know what to do with. amanda: as more is done to determine what led to the mass die off, experts say do not panic, this has happened several times over last few decades. >> my biggest words of assurance

is anchovy populations boom and bust and we are in a boom year, and things like thatjobina famid tribute to the 20-year-old man killed in a crash after east oakland sideshow. they gathered at 50 4th avenue and international boulevard. he was killed after police chased a driver they believe was part of the sideshow. police say the driver raced away from officers and 100 miles per hour, lost control, and crashed into other vehicles. his brother talked with abc 7 news reporter about the dangers of sideshow culture. >> i have seen a lot. cars. we see a lot. now that something physical happened come in now we are hurt because things we see on a daily

basis turnout to be something that caused me to lose a brother. jobina: the alleged driver of the car police were chasing has been arrested. two officers are under investigation for potential misconduct. reggie: firefighters are monitoring hotspots after three alarm fire. flames broke out around 5:00 yesterday on broadway and sharon street. crews were able to get it under control with it an hour and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings. no reports of any injuries and the cause is still under investigation. jobina: a wildfire that prompted evacuations in nevada county is holding steady. the fire started inside a building but would not say how and why the building caught fire. three outbuildings also burned down. containment is up to 20%. full containment is expected by sunday.

drew: we are taking a live look at our san jose camera. starting to see a break in the cloud cover. our marine layer is firmly with us throughout the morning. as we go hour-by-hour that fog is slow to pull back to the coastline. cloudy in the city in parts of the east bay. today extra layers, we keep them on for much of the morning. today is a puller afternoon. we will find the winds gusting 25 to 30 miles per hour and i think tomorrow is windier than today, an indication that on sort -- onshore flow keeps cooler tub or jersey in place. keeping temperatures below average for the entire holiday,

even on the fourth itself we will find temperatures mainly in e . w along the bay shoreline for fireworks on monday night. let's get a check on traffic with sue. sue: we are starting out a little bit friday light but today is a big getaway day. we are looking at light conditions around the bay. san rafael is looking great. very few cars passed your screen. this is the richmond san rafael bridge. there is your drive time's from highway four all the way to san francisco on highway 80. it is still looking pretty good. we have a problem spot. we had possibly three separate incidents. this is northbound one of one in san jose blocking a partial lane of traffic. you can see a blip of traffic so they may have cleared one or two of those incidents out the way. we will check back in just a few. jobina: uber releasing its

reggie: the deadline for julian assange to appeal extradition to the u.s. ends today. if he is sent back to the states he faces 18 criminal charges for publishing classified government documents in 2010. julian assange claims free speech and insisted he was working as a journalist, exposing secrets for transparency. the case could set legal precedents for freedom of the press. the aclu worries the case could open the door for more criminal investigations. julian assange faces 175 years in prison. jobina: 15 black current and former employees are suing tesla accusing them of racial harassment in their factory. they say they've been called racist names and references to slavery and comments from coworkers and managers and even human resources. most of it occurred in teslas

fremont location and says they were given the most physical rolls and past up for promotion. tesla has not responded to the new allegations. reggie: uber has released its latest safety report that shows the ride hailing company received nearly 1000 sexual assault complaints in 2020. uber says 141 of them were of rape. most victims were women and passengers. the report says that number has decreased from previous years where it reported 240 seven rate incidents in 2019. jobina: the supreme court's historic term ended but not before they handed down two more important decisions. they also said goodbye to one justice and welcomed its newest member, justice ketanji brown jackson. >> i, ketanji brown jackson, do solemnly swear --

jobina: a lawsuit filed by gabby petito's parents against brian laundrie's parents is moving forward. yesterday a florida judge denied a request to dismiss the suit, rolling the petitos had a case because the laundries released a statement in the days after gabby petito's disappearance. their lawyer released a statement saying they hope gabby is reunited with her family. gabby's parents argue the laundries made the statement knowing gabby was dead. california now has the nation's most strict rules on plastic packaging. governor newsom signed a bill that would give companies a decade to cut down on single-use plastics. the plan would cut down on the use of plastics by 27% by 2027

and 25% by 2032. also by 2032, most plastics must be recycled at a rate of 65%. happening now, reservations are open if you want to visit california's old estate part. big basin in santa cruz county is opening after being closed since 2020 when the ccu fire destroyed much of it. facilities are limited, there is no electricity and no running water and no internet. if you plan to drive you must make a reservation. it cost six dollar per cart apart. if you take a bus, hike, or bike, you do not need a reservation. next, it is july 1 and there are big changes today from bridge tolls to bar fares.

the minimum wages going up and it doesn't city statewide and many are in the bay area. alameda, berkeley, fremont, san francisco. the extra money might not stay in your pocket because of what we will mention next. let's begin with bart. starting today it will cost you more to ride. fares are increasing 3.5%. this is a delayed increase originally scheduled for january. the golden gate bridge tolls are rising as well. users will start paying eight dollars and $.40. other bridge tolls are not changing. in the state gas tax goes up. it will rise to $.54 per gallon. reggie: new laws also take effect today dealing with guns, schools, and your local bar. 50 drunk drivers off the road bartenders we need to undergo new training to recognize when

someone is intoxicated. there are new limits on how early school can start so students can get more sleep. for middle schools no earlier than 8:00 and for high schools no earlier than 8:30. and requirements will expand for micro -- it helps law enforcement investigate shooting. ghost guns will be included in california's red flag laws allowing ports to seize firearms from people who might be dangerous. ghost guns will also be included in domestic violence restraining orders. they have been exempt until now. jobina: the california highway patrol will be out in full force looking for impaired drivers. they will begin a maximum enforcement period starting at 6:00 tonight and runs through 11:59 on monday. officers will be looking for telltale signs of drivers under the influence, weaving, speeding, slowing down. they have a focus of what speed enforcement will look like.

they are trying to look for distracted driving and incapacitated drivers. reggie: the fourth of july travel rush is on and they're for travelers. here's a live look at sfo. flightaware telling us there are three dozen flight delays or cancellation. ryan curry is live at the airport with what you can expect this weekend. ryan: good morning. it is a foggy start to the day at sfo. we are going to be expecting some delays. we will also mention it is extremely crowded morning at sfo. we do know there is going to be a lot of people coming to the airport this weekend to travel for the fourth of july holiday. we cannot speculate the exact numbers but we have seen the tsa check more people in. that will be leading to a potential busy holiday weekend, the busiest since before covid. abc news is reporting many

airports have already canceled a lot of flights last weekend and that was not even a holiday. this weekend will be a headache for a lot of travelers right here at sfo and across the nation. if anyone is going to be traveling today, expected to be crowded. lines will be long and the airlines themselves they are expecting staffing shortages and other problems. those have caused cancellations and delays and could be amplified this weekend. the advice, give yourself time to get through security and do not cut it close. >> you will have to navigate more traffic on the roads and once you get to the airports there will be longer lines because there staffing issues with the airlines and with tsa. ryan: that is the core of the issue. there is demand upper travel and staffing for the airlines is low. sfo does not normally have is

the athletic reports it is a three year $28 million deal. another fan favorite juan toscano-anderson is also leaving. he will still be in california. he is signing with the lakers. he was born and raised in oakland and one a title with his hometown team, which is incredibly rare. the warriors wants to develop younger players so he would likely not get a lot of time if he stayed. reggie: the trial of wnba star brittney griner got underway in russia. she has been jailed for 131 days. russian authorities claim she had cannabis oil in her luggage and they accused her of drug smuggling. the u.s. embassy promised to send a diplomat to today's hearing. brittney griner's wife is demanding the bite administration do more to secure -- the biden administration do more to secure her release. >> do trust the maximum amount

of effort is being put forward to bring her home? >> i do not come and i hate to say that, because i trust the people working on this are genuine people. that i do believe. i do not think the maximum amount of effort is being done because the rhetoric and the actions do not match. reggie: greiner faces up to 10 years in prison if she is convicted. jobina: the woman suspected of killing a championship cyclist from san francisco has been captured in costa rica. authorities were searching for caitlin armstrong for 34 days. she is wanted in the killing of mariah wilson. wilson was in austin preparing for a raise. authorities say she had a brief relationship with armstrong's boyfriend at the killing might have motivated by jealousy. armstrong travel from newark, new jersey to costa rica using a fake passport. she will be deported back to the

jobina: one person is dead after crash between two boats near angel island. the crash because the motorboat to speed out of control before police officers to get a hold of it. one person in the boat was ejected and pulled from the water. they were taken to the hospital where they later died. four other people were on board the sailboat. san francisco police and the coast guard are investigating. reggie: florida's don't say gay bill goes into effect today. the official name is the parental rights in education bill. advanced discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten or grade three or in a manner that is not
