may occur. watch me. ask your rheumatologist about cosentyx. moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. last year had the highest reported level of hate crimes since 2001. this is not just attack on one community. it's a stance that all of us need to stand together against tate against all of our communities and that's what this is really about. the state's biggest spike in hate crimes and hate incidents in more than 20 years. that's according to a new report from the california department of justice. good evening. i'm amidates and i'm karina nova several state lawmakers and community activists. spoke about the concern over the increasing numbers and what's being done to fight back abc 7 news reporter unser hassan has more from san francisco's chinatown. hate crimes and hate incidents in california in 2021 were worse than any other year that we've collected this data.

since 1995 c assembly member matt. haney is talking about data from a new hate crime rept t cal thae crime was up by 177 percent but blacks in california are still targeted. the most not only was african-americans the highest group to suffer from. hay crime. we were also the highest group to be discriminated against for businesses and financial institutions according. to the report. there was a 30% increase in hate crimes in california between 2020 and 2021. it's the highest increase since post-911 in south asians and muslims were targeted vince pan with the group stopped aapi hate says racist political rhetoric over the past few years translates into increased hate crimes and hate speech and the united states. we have a number of first amendment protections, but that does not mean that we have to accept these things pan ads the number spike because more people feel comfortable.

in san francisco on sahasan abc 7 news. police in palo alto are investigating racist graffiti written on a playground as a hate crime police received a call last night reporting vandalism at eleanor party park on center drive in palo alto racial slurs towards black people were found written in black marker on a play structure. the graffiti has since been removed by the city's park services and public works team, but so far, there are no suspects. anyone with information is asked to contact the palo alto police department. hundreds of kids left without a place to spend their summer break after a display of swastikas at their summer camp created controversy within the organization abc7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains the issue that caused the camp cancellations. hidden villa in los altos has been a place where people can escape into nature and kids can create memories through summer camps, but this year a change in early june nearly 1,000 children were left without a place to spend summer break as all camps were canceled due to staffing shortages and safety hidden
